Potatoes stored in this unusual room will keep fresh and sprout-free for months
Stop storing your tatties in the kitchen as another place will help them stay fresher for way longer
Potatoes are a shopping list must for most households. Their versatility is one attraction, they can be boiled, mashed, roasted and made into chips and the fact they are a great side to so many meals mean the humble spud is a staple food.
And while we all know how to cook them up, storing them is another story. How many times have you gone to a bag of potatoes only to find them spoiling with sprouts growing out of the skins? But that's because we are storing them in the wrong place in the house and even the wrong room, according to one expert.
Potatoes can stay fresh for up to five months if stored correctly and while there are lots of ways to keep them fresh, with experts even suggesting storing them in the fridge, finding a bit of suitable space in the kitchen can sometimes be an issue.
But they can be kept in another room in the house, one you would probably never think of and they will last for a few months.
However, they must also be stored without their plastic bag packaging that they are usually sold in, reports The Express.
Keeping them in the plastic is a sure fire way to see your potatoes go off quickly.
Plastic is notorious for trapping moisture, which can accelerate spoilage in potatoes and lead to them sprouting in just a few weeks.
Instead, they should be placed into a bag which is made of more breathable material such as paper. A cardboard box with holes in it is another good option if you have a lot of spuds to store.
Garden expert Randy Lemmon said that instead of the kitchen where space could be at a premium, another idea space is a place that is cool, dark and somewhere that has good airflow to prevent them from going mouldy.
Randy suggests that you could instead put your spare room to use and place them under an unused bed in shallow boxes.
An unused bed makes an ideal storage spot, maintaining a steady airflow and keeping potatoes away from light and other produce, like onions, which release gases that can lead to their spoilage.
While they can be kept for up to four months here, it's important to check in on them every now and then and look out for any sprouting or green patches.

Any spoiled potatoes should be removed from the box to ensure the rest stay fresh.
While it was once a rule that potatoes should never be kept in the fridge, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) updated that advice in 2023.
It had been said that storing potatoes in cold temperatures was a risk due to the formation of Acrylamide, which was originally associated with the risk of developing cancer.
However, this guidance was reversed by the FSA following a study by the Committee on the Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COT).
It found the storage of potatoe s in the fridge doesn't materially increase acrylamide forming potential when compared to storage in a cool, dark place.

Dear Coleen: I'm heartbroken my partner left me for his mistress
Dear Coleen My partner has moved on with a woman he'd been having an affair with and I'm heartbroken. A few weeks ago, I noticed him acting weird around his phone, but didn't say anything. Instead, I waited for a time when I could look at his phone and, when I did, there were dozens of messages between him and another woman. Then a couple of weekends ago, he told me he had to be away for work for a few nights, so I said 'fine', but I tracked his phone to a hotel a few miles away and waited in the car park like an undercover detective until I spotted him with a woman. I didn't confront them and waited until he came home to say something. He was so cold about it, saying she was an old friend and they'd reconnected, and he'd realised he wants to give things a go with her. He said he didn't know if it would work out, but he wanted to try. I was dumbstruck. We've been dating since 2022 and are both in our 40s, and I stupidly thought he was a grown-up with enough respect for me not to sneak around behind my back. I feel like an idiot. How do I rebuild and how do I resist if it doesn't work out and he comes back? I feel like my life has been shattered. It's not easy at my age to just find someone else. Coleen says It's easier than you think! But, first of all, don't hang on to his comment about not knowing if it'll work out, which was probably designed to give you hope and keep his options open. You need to go full steam ahead and don't look back. Whether it works out with this other woman or not is not your concern. Of course you're hurt because you're in the throes of grieving for someone you hoped would be with you for ever and it's painful because that person is still out there, starting a new life. It's awful, but I promise you that every day it'll hurt a little bit less, especially if you can channel any anger you feel into proving to yourself and to him you're doing fine, and in fact, you're doing better without him. I can empathise with that feeling of your future being shattered – when my first marriage broke down, I remember thinking, 'This is not how I planned my life', and I felt lost. It's OK to have days when you wallow but, the next day, you've got to get up and get on with it. Back to your comment about it not being easy to find someone in your 40s. I started dating in my 50s and I know it's possible. I put myself on a dating app and not every date was great, but I met interesting people and, importantly, it helped to build my confidence after years of being single or in long-term relationships.

Romeo Beckham 'splits from' Kim Turnbull after months of relationship rumours
Romeo Beckham has reportedly split from Kim Turnbull after seven months of dating, with the couple's relationship previously being blamed for the alleged Beckham family feud Romeo Beckham has reportedly parted ways with his girlfriend Kim Turnbull, following months of speculation about a rift within the Beckham family allegedly caused by their relationship. The couple, who have been together for seven months, are said to have called it quits three weeks after David Beckham's 50th birthday celebrations, which were marked by rumours of a family feud due to the apparent absence of Brooklyn Beckham and his wife Nicola Peltz. According to the Daily Mail, insiders maintain that Romeo and Kim's split is "amicable" and unrelated to any alleged family discord. An insider told the publication: "Romeo and Kim are both young and they had a lovely time together but at that age things don't always last forever and they decided to split up." They added that the pair have remained on good terms and have been seen at the same venues since their break up, reports the Mirror. The source expressed regret over the split, noting that Romeo's parents "really adored" Kim and believed she made their son "happy". The source revealed that the break up occurred a "couple of weeks ago" and that the former couple have "remained friendly between them". The insider elaborated: " David and Victoria would hate for the view to be that they split because of Nicola and Brooklyn because that simply isn't the case. The fact is that Kim has got a really busy career as a DJ and Romeo has a busy work life too, there is lots of travelling for both of them at having a relationship at this time isn't all that conducive to their lives." Speculation about a family feud escalated earlier this month with whispers that Romeo's brother Brooklyn had a past romantic association with Kim. TMZ reported earlier this year that the past encounter was considered "all water under the bridge" then. Nonetheless, sources told the publication that the contention stemmed from the eldest sibling Brooklyn and his wife Nicola pondering whether Kim had "the right intentions" when dating Romeo. However, rumours have previously swirled claiming that in a now-removed post, Cruz Beckham stated: "Brooklyn and Kim never dated." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
