Mass wedding marks launch of Dhee Rani-II

The second phase of the Punjab government's "Dhee Rani" mass wedding initiative kicked off in the Rawalpindi Division with a vibrant ceremony that celebrated the union of 97 couples.
Each bride was presented with a dowry package and a gift of Rs100,000.
The event also included the wedding of a visually impaired bride.
Attendees were treated to a lavish meal, and traditional Punjabi music and dance added a cultural flair to the celebration.
The ceremony was attended by two provincial ministers, members of the assembly, and local administrative officials who acted as hosts.
Participants who tied the knot expressed gratitude to the government, noting that financial constraints had delayed their weddingsuntil now.
Speaking at the event, Punjab's Minister for Social Welfare, Sohail Shaukat Butt, hailed the "Dhee Rani" programme as a historic initiative, stating, "No program of this scale has ever been launched in the country's history."
He added that the initiative addresses deep-rooted class disparities and is benefiting Muslims, Christians, and persons with disabilities alike.
"Though the state had resources before, no such initiative was ever taken. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has opened the doors of the state to fulfill the dreams of daughters and their parents," said Butt, calling the program a cornerstone for building a compassionate society.
Punjab's Minister for Transport, Bilal Akbar, echoed the sentiment, saying, "This isn't just about weddings. It's about fulfilling the dreams of mothers, daughters, and sisters."
He emphasised that the government's commitment to public welfare surpasses that of any previous administration.
Akbar highlighted several of the provincial government's achievements within just one year, including the construction of 8,000 kilometres of roads, upgrades to 1,500 basic health units, and improvements in THQ hospitals. He noted that free medicines, discontinued in recent years, have been reinstated.
He also pointed to educational initiatives, saying that 30,000 students had received scholarships and 100,000 laptops were distributed to bright students, signalling what he described as an IT revolution.
"When Shehbaz Sharif distributed laptops, critics mocked the move. But now, those very laptops are helping young people educate themselves and earn a living," he added.
Addressing the recent concerns over wheat distribution, Akbar mentioned a Rs15 billion farmer support package announced just four days prior and the distribution of 9,000 green tractors on merit.
Other programmes highlighted during the event included the introduction of minority cards, "Himmat" cards, and disability support cardsinitiatives designed to serve citizens directly in their communities.
Member of the National Assembly, Tahira Aurangzeb, also addressed the audience, commending the "Dhee Rani" initiative as a step toward making state resources more accessible to the people.

Senate, NA adopt resolutions condemning Israel's attack on Iran
The Senate and the National Assembly have adopted resolutions unanimously condemning Israel's 'unjustified and illegitimate aggression against Iran. The resolution, moved by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar in Senate, said the House stands resolute with Iranian brethren and supports their right to defend themselves against Israeli aggression. It noted that Israeli attack s a blatant violation of fundamental principles of the United Nations and all international norms, and has put peace and security in the region and beyond in grave danger. The resolution unequivocally condemned Israel's heinous crimes against Muslim Ummah especially against brotherly nations of Palestine and Iran. The resolution mentioned that over the years, Israel has been source of countless deaths of Muslims around the world particularly in occupied Palestine. It said the world and Muslim Ummah are witnessing the slaughter of innocent children and civilians in Gaza for last two years on an unimaginable scale. The resolution expressed concern over the inaction of Muslim world against this genocide, which has now led Israel to attack another sovereign Muslim state Iran. In the National Assembly, the resolution was moved by Syed Naveed Qamar. It noted that Israeli strikes are not only a serious violation of the sovereignty and integrity of a United Nations Member state but it also clearly contravenes the fundamental principles of international law and the United Nations Charter. The House warned that such continued blatant acts of aggression by Israel have brought not only the Middle East but the entire world into serious dangers, the consequence of which shall entirely rest on Israel. It said Iran has a right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter. The National Assembly reiterated that Pakistan stands in complete solidarity with the The House called upon the government to immediately call for a meeting of the UN Security Council and the OIC to discuss, condemn and bring an immediate halt to the aggression on Iran. The condemnation comes after Israel said it targeted Iran's nuclear facilities, ballistic missile factories and military commanders on Friday at the start of what it warned would be a prolonged operation to prevent Tehran from building an atomic weapon. Iranian state television reported that Hossein Salami, the chief of the elite Revolutionary Guards corps, had been killed and the unit's headquarters in Tehran had been hit. Several children had been killed in a strike on a residential area in the capital, it said. Iran said it was planning to 'give a harsh response' to the attack, an Iranian security source told Reuters.

PTI brands planning minister 'Goebbels'
Reacting to the planning minister's statement, a PTI spokesperson accused him of trying to become the 'Goebbels' of what he called a 'mandate theft' government. The spokesperson said the economic destruction under Ahsan Iqbal and his associates was unprecedented, and claimed the public understands the economy better than the ministers of the current government. He stated that for the past three years, the people have suffered due to the incompetence and poor decision-making of those in power. He criticized the Punjab government for what he called "destroying farmers, labourers, traders and industrialists". PTI leader Alamgir Khan said the way PTI founder Imran Khan is being treated, Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav was not. "We have no other option but to take recourse to road protests and peaceful resistance," said Alamgir Khan, adding, "We won't refrain from waging a peaceful struggle." Taxman told to enhance skills
In a major development, a National Assembly panel on Thursday linked approval of legal amendments to ban economic transactions by ineligible persons with tax machinery's ability to develop an independent and credible online platform to determine real value of people's assets. The condition came a day after Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said that the government may have to take Rs500 billion worth more tax measures, if the National Assembly did not approve the law to ban the economic transactions. The committee would not pass the amendments related to the economic transactions until the members are satisfied that the Federal Board of Revenue has developed an independent and reliable online platform to assess people's assets, said Standing Committee on Finance Chairman Syed Naveed Qamar. The government has proposed that only those people can buy cars, plots, invest in securities who have sufficient declared white legal resources to buy these assets and maintain bank accounts The finance minister again reiterated on Thursday that the IMF has accepted Rs389 billion in collections on account of improved enforcement in the next fiscal year and for that the new legal powers were needed. The National Assembly Standing Committee on Finance had last month linked the approval of the bill to ban economic transactions with the government's ability to develop a credible online mechanism where the eligibility criterion can be independently determined and verified without harassment by the taxmen. PPP's MNA Mirza Ikhtiar Baig raised the issue of first assessing the credibility of the new platform to make sure that the taxpayers are not harassed by the FBR. Finance Secretary Imdad Ullah Bosal announced before the committee that the government has decided to give a 50% special relief allowance to all officers of the armed forces and 20% to other soldiers, in a move that acknowledges their contributions in defense of the nation. This brings the total increase in the salaries of officers of the armed forces to 60% and to 30% for other soldiers after incorporating the impact of the regular increase in their salaries announced on June 10. The announcement was made before the National Assembly Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue that on Thursday began discussions on the Finance Bill 2026, which is the real budget. The government has given special relief allowance equal to 50% of the basic pay scale to the officers and 20% to junior commissioned officers and soldiers, said the Secretary Finance. The Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan, who is also a member of the standing committee, asked about the fiscal impact of the special relief.
