Players to get ranking protection after freezing eggs

Yahooa day ago

Female tennis players who wish to freeze eggs or embryos, so they can start a family at a later date, will have their ranking protected by the WTA Tour.
The offer is open to any player ranked in the world's top 750 who spends more than 10 weeks out of competition.

The 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens says the rule will reduce the pressure on players to return to the court too quickly.
The 32-year-old, who has won eight WTA tournaments, told BBC Sport she has twice previously used the off-season to freeze her eggs.
"The first time I did it, I rushed back and I was overweight and not happy - and just very stressed out," she said.
"The second time I did it I took a totally different approach so I could just be in better shape: I could have the surgery, I could have more time to recover.
"So having the protected ranking there, so that players don't feel forced to come back early and risk their health again, is the best thing possible."

Players who undergo fertility treatment will be able to use their special ranking to enter up to three tournaments within 10 weeks of their return.
The special ranking will be an average of a player's ranking over a 12-week period before and during their leave.
Players will not, however, be able to use this ranking to enter one of the WTA's premier 1000 events, as the tour wants to encourage players to undertake the procedure at a quieter time of the season.
"It's all trial and error, everyone's body is different," Stephens added.
"Someone might be out for three months, someone might be out for one week.

"Some people gain a tonne of weight, some people can go back immediately. I think when you are family planning, it's better if you have that support."
Stephens says she was a strong advocate for such a measure when a member of the WTA Players' Council, and the tour's chief executive Portia Archer confirms the move was player-led.
"It was very much at the instigation of the players," she said.
"We want to really help players address this conundrum where peak athletic performance coincides with the time period of peak fertility, so players are often faced with this tough choice of how to really maximise and optimise those years."

Grants have also recently been made available towards the cost of any fertility treatment, and earlier this year the WTA introduced paid maternity leave for the first time.
More than 320 players are now eligible for up to 12 months paid leave - with everyone receiving the same amount, irrespective of their ranking.
Returning to the tour after maternity leave started to become easier when the WTA changed the rules before the 2019 season.
New mothers are able to use their previous ranking to enter 12 tournaments over a three-year period from the birth of their child.
The WTA also offers access to a health team, which offers physical assessments, mental health support and guidance on a staged return to play for new mothers and pregnant players.

German Tatjana Maria, who is ranked 81st in the world, has two children and returned to the tour after both pregnancies.
The 37-year-old welcomed the action by the WTA but believes more can be done to assist mothers on tour.
"I think there is still opportunities to help the WTA players and the mums on tour," she told BBC Radio 5 live.
"Even now having two kids on tour there are still issues. The WTA could change a little bit, whether it is [related to] hotel rooms or accreditation to make life easier.
"It is helpful to help [as they are doing] but also to help the mums on tour."

Tennis is not the first sport to offer support to women wishing to freeze their eggs, with the American basketball league the WNBA offering up to $60,000 (£52,500) reimbursement to players for fertility treatment including egg freezing.
High-profile athletes have spoken about their decision to freeze their eggs, including England cricket captain Nat Sciver-Brunt and former England netballer Geva Mentor.

NFL executive Brian Rolapp leaving for PGA Tour CEO position

Brian Rolapp of the NFL is expected to be announced soon as the PGA Tour's new CEO, sources confirmed to The Athletic. Jay Monahan, the current commissioner of the PGA Tour, will remain in his role, but Rolapp — who has held various executive positions at the NFL since 2003 — will lead the tour's new for-profit arm, PGA Tour Enterprises. Advertisement Roger Goodell announced Rolapp's departure in a memo on Thursday sent to team executives and presidents, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Rolapp has most recently served as the NFL's Chief Media and Business Officer, helping the league achieve significant growth in its media rights and sponsorship contracts. He was the chief negotiator for the NFL's $110 billion media deals with ESPN, NBC, Fox, CBS and Amazon. He has held his current role since 2014, and many believed he could be Roger Goodell's successor as NFL commissioner. Goodell's contract has been extended again, as The Athletic reported last month, and that makes it a logical step for Rolapp to seek out experience elsewhere and demonstrate his ability to direct the future of a major sports organization. The PGA Tour CEO role is a newly created position. Rolapp will arrive at the tour during a period of flux for the men's professional game: The PGA Tour and the Saudi Public Investment Fund, the backer of LIV Golf, agreed to work towards unifying the fractured sport two years ago. But still, there is no real solution in sight, with negotiations between the two parties stalling in recent months. PGA Tour Enterprises, which Rolapp is expected to run, was a product of the recent divide in the game. Strategic Sports Group, a private equity group of major American sports owners, invested $1.5 billion into the new for-profit entity of the tour, which has plans to give players access to those funds in the form of equity. The plans allow for the Public Investment Fund to come in and match that investment, if negotiations eventually come to fruition. LIV Golf recently brought on a new CEO as well in Scott O'Neil. Despite Rolapp's expected hire, Monahan will remain the PGA Tour commissioner and presumably will continue to sit on the PGA Tour Enterprises Board. Monahan has been criticized heavily across the board for his and the tour's refusal to communicate with the PIF as LIV Golf launched. Many players vocalized their lack of trust in Monahan after he seemingly reversed course on his word and went behind players' backs to strike a deal with the Saudis. Since the framework agreement between the PGA Tour and the PIF was announced two years ago, Monahan has conceded that the rival LIV Golf league has pushed the PGA Tour to evolve. The PGA Tour, which typically avoids making off-course news during major championship weeks, declined to comment.

Brian Rolapp, a potential successor to Roger Goodell, leaving NFL to become PGA Tour CEO: Reports

Brian Rolapp is jumping over to the PGA Tour. Rolapp is leaving his position as an NFL executive vice president to become the next PGA Tour CEO, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter and Seth Wickersham. Rolapp will now work under Tour commissioner Jay Monahan. Advertisement Rolapp has been with the NFL for 22 years, and was widely believed to be a potential successor to commissioner Roger Goodell whenever he leaves his post. Goodell sent a memo to all team executives and presidents to notify them of Rolapp's departure on Thursday. The Tour has not confirmed the news, which came in the middle of the opening round of the U.S. Open. That major championship is run by the United States Golf Association and is separate from the PGA Tour. Monahan has held his post as the Tour's commissioner since 2017, when he replaced longtime commissioner Tim Finchem. Monahan is just the fourth commissioner in the Tour's history. He stepped away briefly from his post in 2023 due to an undisclosed health issue, which came just a week after his announcement that the Tour was entering negotiations to join forces with LIV Golf — something that drew an immense amount of criticism from both inside the Tour and out. Advertisement Monahan and the Tour are still in negotiations with LIV Golf, which came after years of turmoil in the sport and Monahan's strong condemnation of the Saudi Arabian-backed league. It's unclear if such a deal will get done, however, as the two sides are well past their self-imposed deadline. The Tour announced last year that it would begin looking for a new CEO to work alongside Monahan, and that the job would be tasked with growing the commercial side of the business. The Tour has since launched a new for-profit arm, PGA Tour Enterprises, in an effort to compete with LIV Golf. PGA Tour Enterprises received an initial investment of $1.5 billion from the Strategic Sports Group to get off the ground.
