Pickard saves the day for Oilers in a backup role in 5-4 OT win over Panthers in Game 4 of Cup Final
A flat and undisciplined start by the Edmonton Oilers left coach Kris Knoblauch no choice but to turn to Plan B — as in backup goalie Calvin Pickard — a mere 20 minutes into Game 4 of their Stanley Cup Final series against Florida.
With no disrespect to starter Stuart Skinner, who had little help in allowing three goals on 17 shots, it was the wakeup call the Oilers needed on Thursday night.

Vikings, OC Wes Phillips agree to contract extension
The Minnesota Vikings will keep Wes Phillips as their offensive coordinator for a little while longer. According to Ben Goessling of the Minnesota Star Tribune, the Vikings and Phillips have agreed to a contract extension. Phillips' deal was set to expire after the 2025 season, but the team is adding one more year to his contract, keeping him on the coaching staff through 2026. Advertisement Phillips joined the Vikings as their offensive coordinator in 2022 after three years with the Los Angeles Rams on Sean McVay's staff. Before that, he was Washington's tight ends coach from 2014-2018, spending three years on the same staff as McVay and two years with Kevin O'Connell. The Vikings have ranked seventh, 10th and 12th in total yards under Phillips the last three years but will look to improve those numbers in 2025 with J.J. McCarthy taking over as the starting quarterback. This article originally appeared on Vikings Wire: Vikings, OC Wes Phillips agree to contract extension

Pat Freiermuth Compares Aaron Rodgers to Steelers Legend
New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers during a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 20, 2024. -- Ed Thompson / Steelers Now Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth has a very interesting comparison for new quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Pittsburgh Steelers are hoping their going to get the best quarterback play they've had since Ben Roethlisberger from Aaron Rodgers this season. Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth thinks that's exactly what they're going to get. Advertisement 'I think he's similar to Ben in a way where like he's gonna trust you to where you're gonna be, and he's gonna throw you open,' Freiermuth said on the latest episode of 'Not Just Football with Cam Heyward.' 'Aaron, I can see on film where he's expecting you to be somewhere, and if he trusts you, he's gonna throw it to that spot and go let you make a play. I think that is what I've noticed a lot on film.' It's not often players can compared someone else to a two-time Super Bowl champion and six-time Pro Bowler like Roethlisberger. But Freiermuth is fortunate to be able to now suiting up with a four-time NFL MVP in Rodgers. The 41-year-old's best football is likely behind him. At least, that looked to be the case last season as he led the New York Jets to a very disappointing 5-12 finish. Advertisement However, Rodgers proved to still have some good football left in him while completing 368 of his 584 passes (63%) for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers during a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 20, 2024. — Ed Thompson / Steelers Now Rodgers may not be the same player he used to be physically, especially after suffering a torn Achilles at the start of the 2023 season. However, Freiermuth thinks his football IQ and experience is what will make the biggest defense for the Steelers offense, which has struggled mightily since Roethlisberger retired following the 2021 season. 'He sees the game in a certain way,' Freiermuth said. 'If we can get on that same page to seeing where he sees the defenses and where he wants the routes to go and the ball placement and stuff, the quicker we can do that, the quicker the offense is gonna go.' Can Aaron Rodgers Pull Off Brett Favre-Like 2009 Season?
Former NFL offensive lineman and current analyst Ross Tucker weighed in on the Pittsburgh Steelers' signing of four-time NFL MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Tucker believes the Steelers are hoping for a Brett Favre-like 2009 season from Rodgers. Favre, who at age 40, passed for 4,202 yards, 33 touchdown and seven interceptions in 2009. He also had a career-best 107.2 quarterback rating. Favre led Minnesota to the NFC Championship, coming up just short 31-28 against the New Orleans Saints. Advertisement 'Here what I will say about Aaron Rodgers, a couple thoughts. I believe the Steelers are hoping that he has his Brett Favre Vikings season in Pittsburgh this year. Remember when it was just OK for Favre with the Jets. Then he goes to the Vikings and in that first year he was awesome. I think that's what the Steelers are hoping for,' Tucker said on the Ross Tucker Podcast. Tucker also likes that the Steelers are not throwing in the white towel on the 2025 season. He respects Pittsburgh for trying to win and put veterans like Cam Heyward and T.J. Watt in the best position to win a Super Bowl. 'Look, I know a lot of Steelers fans, (it) doesn't seem like any of them are happy that Aaron Rodgers is going to be their quarterback. Here who is happy — Cam Heyward, T.J. Watt,' Tucker said. 'If the only argument is that the Steelers feel like Aaron Rodgers gives them their best chance to win, win a playoff game, maybe even go on a run. Then if you're a veteran player, some of the older guys like Cam Heyward or Watt, then you love this decision. Because you don't want to rebuild. You don't want to have a terrible year. You want to try to have the best season you can in 2025. And that part of it, I very much respect.' The Steelers are currently on a eight-year playoff win drought, which has not occurred for the franchise since pre-1972. Watt hasn't even won a playoff game in his decorated career. The Steelers are hoping Rodgers' could help snap the dreaded playoff win streak. Despite signing Rodgers, the Steelers' Super Bowl odds did not change at most sportsbooks. In fact, the Steelers' Super Bowl odds went unchanged at BETMGM (+4500). The Steelers (22-1) have the eighth-best odds to win the AFC and third-best odds (+600) to win the AFC North. Advertisement Pittsburgh's win total for the 2025 season is set at 8.5. There's two reasons for why the odds were not altered. First, it was expected that Rodgers was going to sign with Pittsburgh (eventually). It really wasn't a secret. Second, at 41 years of age, how much of an impact will Rodgers have on the Steelers' season? He's an upgrade from Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, but he does not elevate the Steelers into the Super Bowl contenders category. Despite narratives that Rodgers is washed, it's hard to dispute that he's not the best quarterback the Steelers have had since Ben Roethlisberger retired after the 2021 season. Since 2022, Rodgers has 54 passing touchdowns. In that same time frame, the Steelers have had only 46 touchdown passes. Rodgers also had only one pass attempt in 2023 before suffering a season-ending Achilles injury. Advertisement The four-time league MVP and future Hall of Fame quarterback showed he can still play good football last year with the New York Jets, throwing for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
