Steve Spurrier questions Steve Sarkisian's handling of Arch Manning and Quinn Ewers
Steve Spurrier is tired of hearing that the Texas Longhorns are the favorites to win the SEC in 2025. The "head ball coach" questions a lot of things about the UT program, including the entire quarterback situation over the past two years.
'Most people are picking Texas to win the SEC in football,' Spurrier said on Another Dooley Noted Podcast. 'They've got Arch Manning already winning the Heisman, too. My question is, if he was this good how come they let Quinn Ewers play all the time last year? He was a 7th round pick?'
After the dust settled on last season, there were many that felt Texas coach Steve Sarkisian's decision to stick with Ewers at quarterback might have cost Texas last year's national title. To extrapolate further, if Manning had started last season and UT didn't win the title, at least Arch would have more experience going into this season.
USA TODAY Sports writer Matt Hayes said the decision to keep Manning on the bench was, "what could one day be considered a monumentally poor decision by one of the game's best coaches."
It seems Spurrier shares that opinion. If Manning is so good, shouldn't he have beat out Ewers?
The Texas QB room over the past two years was one of the most unique in college football history. Never before (and probably never again) has a QB room featured two No. 1 ranked players in the nation. 'It's probably pretty annoying having me as a backup," Manning deadpanned this spring.
For his part, Sark defends his decision to stick with Ewers. Sark told CBS Sports' Josh Pate in May that he owed Ewers a lot.
"First of all, Quinn Ewers decided to come to the University of Texas when we were a 5-11 football team. We owe a ton to Quinn," Sarkisian said. "Because if Quinn Ewers doesn't come, I don't know if the next five guys are coming. And if those next 5 guys don't come, I don't know if the next 10 guys are coming."
And that's really the answer to why Sark didn't bench Ewers. He felt everything Texas is building started with Ewers decision to transfer to Texas from Ohio State. Will Sark ever be that loyal again? It's hard to tell. But to program outsiders who don't know that piece of information, playing Ewers over Manning didn't make much sense.
'You only have to ask Coach Sark how come you played that one instead of this one,' Spurrier said. 'Hopefully he'll say 'Because we thought he was better than that one.' Isn't that why you play one guy and not the other? Unless it was discipline, and there was no discipline or anything.'
Whether Spurrier genuinely didn't know why Sark stuck with Ewers, thought the reasoning was flawed or is just trying to disrupt a growing SEC power, it still brings the questions up again.
"Here's a guy that started for three years at quarterback for us," Sark told Pate. "Battled injuries all three years. Leads us to two college football playoffs. Leads us to a Big 12 championship. Leads us to an SEC Championship Game, our first year in the conference. And that's his 'legacy' here. His legacy is way bigger than just that."
But Sark and Manning don't seem to pay much attention to outside noise, even from a Hall of Fame coach. The two are focused on 2025 and Ohio State on Aug. 30.

Victor Wembanyama's Height Is Turning Heads After New Photo With LeBron James
Victor Wembanyama's Height Is Turning Heads After New Photo With LeBron James originally appeared on Athlon Sports. San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama drew plenty of eyes during the Fanatics Fest over the weekend, and for good reason. Advertisement With his towering 7-foot-3 height, it's hard to miss the young NBA star. After all, it's difficult to find someone taller than him at the event — even if it featured some of the best athletes in the world today. On Saturday, Wembanyama was already trending online after he shared a moment with streamer Kai Cenat. Considering that the media personality stands at just 5-foot-3, the massive height difference between him and the Spurs center was immediately noticeable. Sure enough, Wembanyama's incredible size remained a hot topic throughout the event. When he appeared on stage with LeBron James during a live taping of "The Shop," his height became the focus of attention once again. After Wembanyama took a group photo alongside James, fans couldn't help but react to how small he made the 6-foot-9 Lakers forward look. "Wemby so tall he make bron look 5'11," a commenter wrote. Another one said, "Bro LeBron comin up to Wemby's shoulder is craazy to see!" Advertisement A fan added, "6'9" and still short. Wemby is a giant amongst men." A fourth follower echoed a similar sentiment, noting, "Making someone 6'9 look small is crazy." "lol Wemby make bron regular height," a social media user wrote. A poster remarked, "Why Victor always making the king to look short." "Wemby making tall guys look short," a fan shared. An Instagram user stated, "Wemby tall [expletive]." Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James looked short while posing next to Victor Johnson-Imagn Images Prior to joining the NBA in 2023, Victor Wembanyama was listed at 7-foot-4 (7-foot-5 in shoes), per ESPN. However, the official NBA page has him at 7-foot-3. With the latest photo of Wemby and James, though, it wouldn't be a surprise if speculation starts that the youngster is actually taller than his listed height. LeBron James Shares Strong Message on Cooper Flagg Landing With Mavericks
LeBron James Shares Strong Message on Cooper Flagg Landing With Mavericks originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The anticipation is high for the 2025 NBA draft on Wednesday, with the spotlight mainly on Duke Blue Devils star and projected No. 1 overall pick, Cooper Flagg. Advertisement Flagg is all but locked in to become a Dallas Maverick—a stunning development considering the team held just a 1.8% chance to win the lottery back in May. Now, he's expected to join a veteran core that includes Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, and key contributors like Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively. Ahead of draft night, LeBron James and co-host Steve Nash released the latest episode of their Mind the Game podcast, where James shared strong thoughts on Flagg's likely landing in Dallas—a much different situation than James himself faced when he was drafted by his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003. "[Cooper Flagg] has the benefit, unlike myself, he gets to join a team that's established with Hall of Fame guys," James said Tuesday, contrasting it with his own experience being drafted by a rebuilding Cavaliers team. James added on the podcast, in reference to Flagg joining forces with Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, and Klay Thompson. Advertisement "They can give him the whole blueprint, while he continues to learn what his blueprint will be," James said. "And I think that's going to be an incredible thing for him — to have that type of presence, that type of leadership, that type of just basketball IQ and knowledge around him every single day from those pieces. So I think he's going to be amazing." Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James (23).Candice Ward-Imagn Images Prior to Cooper Flagg beginning his career at Duke, he was already making waves on the AAU circuit—most notably when a viral clip captured LeBron James giving him advice after a game. Now, at just 18 years old, Flagg will soon have the opportunity to compete against James on an NBA floor. James, who turns 41 in December, is set to make history as he enters his 23rd season in the league. LSU Football Preview 2025: Brian Kelly Has Been Better Than You Think
It's so easy to dunk on Brian Jesus knows, Notre Dame fans love to spend their idle time doing just that, as they meme away about how their program is rocking and rolling under Marcus Freeman, while LSU played for the Texas provides plenty of material with a screamy rant here, a punched table there, and a few goofy-fun things to lighten the mood. Such is the life of being a high-profile head coach at a school that demands national titles, or at least College Football Playoff appearances. But Kelly has been better so far than he gets credit for ... sort of. X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN LSU Offense BreakdownLSU Defense BreakdownSeason Prediction, Win Total, Keys to SeasonLSU has yet to win an SEC Championship, and it hasn't been all that close to winning a national title. It got to the 2022 title game and lost to Georgia 50-30, right after losing to a Texas A&M team that finished with a losing is 0-3 now at LSU in season openers, last year's team collapsed just when it was time to kick it in, the defenses haven't been great, and … Nick Saban went 28-12 in his first three seasons at LSU. Brian Kelly is three seasons, Kelly has half as many double-digit win runs at LSU as Kentucky has enjoyed in 109 years of college football, half as many as South Carolina has put up in 117 seasons, one fewer than Mississippi State has logged in 120 years, two more than the none from Vanderbilt in its football history, as many as Auburn has scored since the 2010 national title campaign, and …Texas A&M has as many double-digit win seasons since leaving the Southwest Conference as Brian Kelly has cranked out in the last three years. There's a LOT to criticize Brian Kelly about - I can not believe how much I defend him - but the dude is the winningest head football coach at the University of Notre Dame, and last year was the first in eight seasons that he didn't win double-digit games - he won just about any other school, considering the crash at the end of the Ed Orgeron era, there would be statues created for a coach who won 39 games with three bowl victories - and a Heisman winner - in his first three years. But this is LSU. The school's last three head coaches all won national titles. Orgeron did it in his fourth full season. Les Miles won it all in Year Three, but Saban did it in his fourth is Brian Kelly's fourth season in Baton Rouge. It's National Championship Winning time.(Or, by any reasonable standard, at least get to the College Football Playoff.)
