Real cost of flying cheaper: IATA says airfares down 40%, but planes are stuck in traffic

Despite lower ticket prices, the aviation industry faces significant headwinds. IATA highlights supply chain issues, with aircraft delivery delays stretching to 14 years and impacting airline profitability. Regulatory hurdles and safety concerns, including incomplete accident investigations and conflict zone risks, further cloud the skies for airlines and passengers alike.

Despite sky-high fuel prices, taxes, and a turbulent global economy, the real cost of flying has nosedived—by 40% over the past decade. So says Willie Walsh, Director General of the International Air Transport Association IATA ), speaking at the group's annual general meeting in India, its first in the country in 42 years. But while ticket prices have dropped, airline growth is being clipped by some serious supply chain headwinds.Representing over 350 global carriers, IATA projects airlines will earn a combined profit of USD 36 billion this year on revenues of USD 979 billion. That's a net margin of 3.7%, or a modest USD 7.20 profit per passenger, reported PTI.'Our profitability doesn't match the value we create,' Walsh said, pointing out that aviation supports 86.5 million jobs and accounts for 3.9% of global GDP.Even so, India's booming aviation sector is seeing surging demand and rising concerns about airfare fluctuations—despite the overall drop in inflation-adjusted ticket costs.Meanwhile, the aviation industry is stuck in a holding pattern—literally—when it comes to aircraft deliveries.Walsh blasted the manufacturing sector for its poor performance: a 17,000 aircraft backlog means customers face a 14-year wait from order to delivery. Aircraft deliveries scheduled for 2025 are already 26% below what was promised just a year ago.More than 1,100 aircraft less than 10 years old are currently mothballed, equating to 3.8% of the fleet—nearly triple the pre-pandemic average. The annual fleet replacement rate has slumped to 3%, far below the healthy 5–6% mark. That shortage isn't just an inconvenience; it's costing money. 'Some demand goes unmet. Scarcity drives up maintenance and leasing costs,' Walsh noted. And it's unlikely to improve anytime soon—manufacturers say it could take until 2030 to untangle the mess.Adding to the turbulence, Walsh took aim at bad regulation, calling it a major threat to affordability and progress. 'Regulators aren't spending their own money. Business leaders think in terms of cost-benefit. Politicians? Not always,' he quipped. On safety, there's more troubling news: fewer than half of aviation accident investigations in the past six years have produced final reports, meaning vital safety lessons are being lost.Last year, commercial aviation saw just seven fatal accidents across 40.6 million flights, with 244 fatalities among 4.8 billion passengers—a strong safety record overall. But conflict zones have added new risks, with two civil aircraft downed and airports bombed in military operations. Navigation system interference near war zones is also on the rise.Flying may be cheaper than ever, but between plane shortages, regulatory red tape, and global unrest, the skies aren't as clear as they used to be.(With inputs from PTI)

UP CM directs officials to take action against fake, shell companies

'Tax evasion is a national crime that negatively impacts development plans and welfare schemes,' he said. While conducting a high-level review of the State Tax Department, the CM directed officials to ensure transparency in tax collection and adopt a policy of technological efficiency and strict enforcement. Lucknow, Jun 7 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday directed officials to take action against shell companies to stop the attempts to misuse the facilities meant for genuine traders. Stressing that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a consumer-based tax system, he noted that areas with higher population density are naturally expected to generate more tax revenue. He instructed officials to develop special strategies for zones where tax collection is below average. Adityanath directed that information on suspicious firms registered under Central GST (CGST) be shared with the Centre for cancellation of their registration. For firms under State GST (SGST), he ordered in-depth departmental investigations, and if irregularities are found, their registration should be canceled and FIRs lodged. The CM emphasised the need for on-site inspection of all newly registered firms, stating 'fake companies should not be allowed to obstruct the rights of honest taxpayers'. CM Adityanath said that such acts are an attempt to misuse the facilities meant for genuine traders, which is unforgivable. 'Such inspections are essential to ensure that genuine businesses can operate fairly and without interference,' he said. During the meeting, officials informed the CM that Rs 18,161.59 crore in GST and VAT had been collected during April and May against the financial year 2025-26 target of Rs 1,75,725 crore. Marriage, Disappearance, Death: Inside Indore Couple's Chilling Meghalaya Trip

Last Updated: Upon thorough search, Raja's body was found in a gorge on June 2, while a search is still on for his wife. An Indore-based newlywed couple – Raja Raghuvanshi (30) and Sonam Raghuwanshi (27) – who came to rain-soaked hills of Meghalaya for their honeymoon, shockingly disappeared on May 23. Upon thorough search, Raja's body was found in a gorge on June 2, while a search is still on for his wife. Here's the timeline of the incidents: May 20, Guwahati: The duo embarked on their honeymoon on May 20, where Guwahati was their first stop. May 21, Shillong: The couple reached Balaji Guest House in Meghalaya's Shillong and checked in. May 22 morning, Shillong: They rented a two-wheeler on Keating Road in the morning and returned to Balaji Guest House. They checked out, skipping breakfast, and informed the manager they'd be back by May 25, or would call if they needed a room. May 22 evening, Mawlakhiat, East Khasi Hills: The couple arrived in Mawlakhiat village on a rented scooter. They trekked over 3,000 steps down the gorge to visit the famous living root bridges in Nongriat village, where they stayed the night, according to police. May 23, morning: Mawlakhiat, East Khasi Hills: The couple checked out of Shipara Homestay and returned to Mawlakhiat village unaccompanied by their guide. They departed from Mawlakhiat and later they vanished from the Sohra (Cherrapunji) area. A search began in the surrounding areas with assistance from local villagers. Albert Pde, a local guide at Mawlakhiat, told news agency PTI that he saw the couple with three male tourists while they were climbing from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat around 10 am on May 23. The guide told the police the couple informed him they would manage by themselves and did not use his service for the return trek. May 25, Sohrarim: The police traced the scooty owner, who came to Sohra police station and confirmed that the Raghuvanshi couple had rented the two-wheeler. June 2, Wei Sawdong Falls: The semi-decomposed body of 30-year-old Raja was discovered at the bottom of the gorge near the Weisawdong Falls parking area at Riat Arliang. He was identified by a distinctive 'Raja" tattoo on his right hand. Recovered along with Raja's decomposed body were a machete, a white shirt belonging to a woman, a strip of medicine, a part of a mobile phone LCD screen, and a smartwatch. June 4, Sohra: A raincoat with blood stains — suspected to possibly belong to the missing tourist — was recovered near Mawkma Road, Sohra, and was sent for forensic testing. 'We recovered a wet raincoat. There are certain stains on it, but we cannot confirm if those are blood stains. Only forensic tests will determine that," East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem had said. The search for 27-year-old Sonam is still underway. Police have registered a murder case and are treating the circumstances with suspicion. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) is leading the probe. 'We are investigating with an open mind, and all possibilities, including honour killing, are being explored," SP Syiem told CNN-News18. Raja's body has been sent to NEIGRIHMS, Shillong, for post-mortem examination. As the search for Sonam continues, investigators hope that the recovery of the dao and mobile phone will provide critical leads in unraveling the mystery behind the suspected double homicide.
