Chelsea sign Strasbourg defender Mamadou Sarr on eight-year deal
The France Under-19 international played 27 times in Ligue 1 last season, his first full campaign in the top flight, as they – managed by Liam Rosenior – finished seventh to qualify for the Conference League.
Strasbourg are owned by Chelsea's parent company BlueCo, with Sarr to become the latest player to have spent time at both clubs.
Welcome to Chelsea, Mamadou Sarr! 🔵
— Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) June 9, 2025
Central defence is considered a priority for strengthening this summer after a season in which injuries badly disrupted that area of the pitch.
First-choice Wesley Fofana made only 14 appearances in the Premier League last term and his availability prospects are a concern, the former Leicester defender having been fit to play just 29 times in the league in the three seasons since he moved to Stamford Bridge.
At 19, Sarr is unlikely to be put straight into the team, meaning at present, Enzo Maresca's side are dependent on Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoit Badiashile as their fit senior central defenders ahead of the Club World Cup.

Spurs urged to sign Arsenal and Chelsea transfer target to replace Son Heung-min
Jamie O'Hara has urged Tottenham to sign Arsenal and Chelsea transfer target Leroy Sane to replace Son Heung-min in the summer window. The Bayern Munich winger becomes a free agent at the end of the month with Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea all interested in a deal for the 29-year-old. Tottenham are said to be 'confident' of winning the race for Sane, who has reportedly already moved to London with his wife ahead of a move. Former Spurs star O'Hara feels Sane would be an ideal replacement for Son, who looks set for an exit before the start of the new 2025-26 season. 'I'd love Leroy Sane to sign for Spurs,' O'Hara told Grosvenor Sport about the Germany international, who previously played for Manchester City. 'He's a world class player who has won everything. Why would you not want him at your football club? 'He might've picked up a few injuries in his career, but you can't tell me he wouldn't be a great signing for Spurs – even if he demands up to £250,000 a week. 'There's so many areas where Tottenham need to improve. I'd say the highest priority position for Spurs is a left-winger. 'I don't think Son Heung-min can affect a game like he used to; I think he's on his way out and I'd let him go. 'The backup players to that position aren't great either. Wilson Odobert hasn't been too convincing from what I've seen of him so far. 'Spurs will be playing Champions League football next season, which gives them a huge opportunity to spend money, recruit well and stay in the Champions League. 'They've somehow clinched European football after finishing 17th in the league – Daniel Levy has to capitalise on this chance.' It has been reported that Spurs wish to generate transfer funds and reshape their squad, which is why Son has been put up for sale. Son, who can operate as a left winger or centre-forward, is wanted by several teams from Saudi Arabia. More Trending The 32-year-old only has one year left on his deal and Spurs would rather sell him now and generate a fee than lose him as a free agent in 2026. Should Son be replaced by Sane, Spurs would be getting a player who landed two Premier League trophies under Pep Guardiola at City. Sane also won the FA Cup with City and helped the club clinch three Carabao Cup titles. He has spent the last two seasons playing with former Tottenham stars Harry Kane and Eric Dier at Bayern. Chelsea sign Mamadou Sarr for £12m from sister club Strasbourg
Chelsea have completed the signing of the Strasbourg centre back Mamadou Sarr in a deal worth in the region of €14million (about £12million). The 19-year-old defender has signed a contract until 2033, having initially agreed to move to Stamford Bridge in January. He spent the remainder of the season with Strasbourg, a sister club to Chelsea because of their shared ownership by BlueCo, the consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital that bought the west London club in 2022. Sarr will be part of Enzo Maresca's squad for the Club World Cup, which begins this weekend, rather than represent France's youth sides on international duty. Sarr has been capped by France up to under-20 level. The defender is Chelsea's third completed signing of this window, after confirmation of Dário Essugo's £18.5million transfer from Sporting Lisbon and Liam Delap's arrival from Ipswich Town. Delap was signed for £30million last week and like Sarr, he will miss international duty this month. The 22-year-old was not called up by England Under-21 for their European Championship defence so that he can feature at the Club World Cup for Chelsea. Sarr made 27 Ligue 1 appearances this season as Strasbourg finished 7th in Ligue 1. He joined for a reported €10million last summer from Lyon, who did not retain a sell-on clause. Sarr broke through the youth ranks there and won the French Youth Cup, the Coupe Gambardella, in 2022. Sarr will be given the chance to impress at the Club World Cup along with Andrey Santos, the Brazilian midfielder who spent last season on loan to Strasbourg. The goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, another loanee from Chelsea, was the French club's player of the season. Chelsea are still trying to sign the AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan as well as Jamie Gittens, the Borussia Dortmund winger. They also retain an interest in the Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike. The first transfer window of the summer closes on Tuesday at 7pm, in line with the registration window for the Club World Cup. The transfer window will re-open again on Monday, June 16. Meanwhile, Manchester City are interested in signing Chelsea's back-up goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli. Pep Guardiola's side are looking for a replacement for Scott Carson, 39, who will leave the club at the end of the season after six years at the Etihad Stadium. Carson has made only two appearances since joining the club in 2019, initially on loan from Derby County before completing a free transfer in 2021, but the veteran was a valued member of the group, and City are seeking a similar character to bolster their goalkeeping department. Bettinelli, 33, joined Chelsea from Fulham in 2021 in a similar capacity, as a reserve goalkeeper. While he has made only one first-team appearance, against Chesterfield in the FA Cup in 2022, he is known to be a popular character in the dressing room and a valued member of the squad, particularly by managers, as an older head within a younger group. City are also known to be pursuing Tijjani Reijnders, of Milan, Rayan Cherki, of Lyon, and Rayan Aït-Nouri, of Wolves.

Man City target forgotten Chelsea star to replace cult hero Scott Carson
Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing a forgotten Chelsea outcast to replace departing cult hero Scott Carson. On Monday, City announced that veteran goalkeeper Carson would leave the club upon the expiry of his contract this summer following six trophy-laden years at the Etihad. Football fans everywhere were stunned in 2019 when Pep Guardiola signed the former England international, initially on loan, from Derby County. Only ever the third-choice keeper, Carson would make just two appearances for the Citizens, the last of which in 2021, and was signed in part to help fill the club's homegrown quota. Nevertheless, he leaves Manchester with four winners medals for the Champions League, Club World Cup, Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup. The 39-year-old's exit does however leave City needing to sign a new shotstopper in time for this summer's Club World Cup, with the temporary transfer window closing on Tuesday. Goalkeeper is an area the club have been looking to strengthen in for some time, though Guardiola has confirmed that City pulled out of the race to sign Espanyol star Joan Garcia who will now join Barcelona. Sky Sports report that Portugal's Nations League final hero Diogo Costa is a target, while they have the option to buy-back England star James Trafford from Burnley. But the Telegraph add that City are ready to make a move for Chelsea's third-choice goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli and are hopeful of getting a deal done within the next 24 hours. More Trending The 33-year-old has spent the past four seasons at Stamford Bridge but his only appearance has been an FA Cup win over non-league Chesterfield in 2022. Despite being a forgotten player, multiple Chelsea managers have kept Bettinelli on board due to his great work on the training ground, a quality Guardiola also admires. The Englishman would not cost much and help make space for the Blues to sign a new keeper as they continue to push for AC Milan's Mike Maignan. Following a trophy-less 2024/25 campaign, City are making big waves in the transfer market, with Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and Rayan Ait-Nouri on the verge of moving to the Etihad for a combined £112million.
