Local restaurants seeing business boost from NCAA track meet at University of North Florida
Hundreds of college athletes from across the eastern half of the country are in Jacksonville, as the University of North Florida hosts the 2025 NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Track and Field East Region First Round Championship this week.
Local businesses say they are seeing a boost in business because of it.
'We do see a lot of kids coming in with the coaches and stuff, lunch and dinner,' Snehal Patel, Owner & Manager of Tikka Bowl and Tacos Southside location, said.
'We've seen a good amount of college kids because of the meet come in,' Top Israel, Shift Lead at Clean Eatz Southside, said.

According to the UNF, this year there are 174 college track and field teams at the meet, with a total of 1,779 student-athletes competing.
They tell me they are expecting roughly 6,000 people at the meet for each day of the four-day competition. The last time UNF held this meet was in 2023, and they report that the city of Jacksonville saw more than $9 million in economic benefit just from this event alone.

UNF said it plans to host the championship again in 2027. Patel is already looking forward to the next one.
'We hope these meets keep happening over here,' Patel said. 'It's going to help a lot of small businesses like ours.'
Day 1 of the meet kicks off Wednesday at Hodges Stadium.

Jaguars' Travis Hunter is fitting in just fine in Jacksonville
The Jacksonville Jaguars' unicorn, Travis Hunter, seems to be on his way to seamlessly make the transition from collegiate amateur to NFL superstar. Hunter has yet to even take a snap, and yet his impact has already been felt both on the practice field and all over Duval County. Just this week, Hunter went viral yet again for an insane interception at the Jaguars' OTAs, but how is Hunter handling the transition to the NFL? Advertisement Action Sports Jax's Brent Martineau sat down with Hunter and discussed what it's been like for him since being drafted and what life is like inside the building. When asked that very question, Hunter replied, 'It's going great, it's a dream come true, and just happy to be out here with the guys, just being goofy and being myself.' 'I'm enjoying being a Jag, just being here, being able to play and being in the league, living my dream like I said before,' Hunter said. For some, the pressure might be too much. The day Hunter was drafted, he instantly became the franchise's most popular player ever. For many, that pressure can be overwhelming, but for Hunter, it almost seems natural. Advertisement He's just focused on football and being the very best player he can be for Head Coach Liam Coen and the rest of the coaching staff. Speaking of Coen, Hunter said he's picking things up quickly in Coen's playbook. 'The playbook is of course harder here, but I just go about it the same way, do what I have to do to be on the football field and playing fast,' Hunter said. Hunter went on to say that he's a perfect fit for Coen's offense. 'I fit perfectly. One of the guys, going to get the ball in the right spot and do my job,' Hunter said. Even so, Hunter doesn't want to set goals for himself just yet and knows he needs to be patient with himself. Success isn't instant gratification; it takes time and effort, and he knows that. Coaches understand they are putting a lot on our plate right now, but as a player, you want to do everything right, you want to make sure you do everything right.' When asked what stands out about Thomas, Hunter said, 'His work ethic. He's going to do exactly what coach wants but he's also going to make a play every time the ball comes to him.' 'You are going to see a group of guys that love the sport and group of guys that will work hard for each other, not just for themself for the rest of the guys on the team,' he said. Fla. Senate restores advanced class funding
For months, Kaden Young has been calling on leaders in Jacksonville and statewide to save the courses he says, made him into the person he is today. 'I know I wouldn't be the same person,' said Young. 'I wouldn't be standing here today doing this interview.' Many local school districts, were worried about a proposal to cut school bonus funding by 50 percent for students that pass accelerated courses like AP, IB and AICE. But Tuesday, the Florida Senate's latest proposal got rid of that, fully restoring the funding. 'It's like jubilant almost,' said Young. 'It's what we've been fighting for this entire time and to see that it might have sparked some change its everything I could have dreamed of honestly.' >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< The new plan says those dollars will be split, with districts permitted to spend 20 percent on discretionary spending, while 80 percent will go into a new fund reserved for bonuses and other incentives. 'We're simply putting that money into a categorical that way we can just account for it more. But the same amount of money will be there,' said Senate K-12 Appropriations Chair Danny Burgess (R-Zephyrhills). 'We know just how important it is for those courses, those classes and those students,' said Duval County School Board Member Darryl Willie. Willie says happy with the senate's proposal, but says there is still work left to do with the house still needing to agree with it. 'We're going to continue to have these conversations and relationships with our folks up in Tallahassee to make sure that they understand how it will affect us,' said Willie. And as lawmakers prepare to debate, Kaden wants them to remember- this funding can change lives. 'These are lifelines,' said Young. 'They're not luxuries, they're necessities.' 3 candidates for Downtown Investment Authority CEO coming to Jacksonville on Monday
Three finalists for the Downtown Investment Authority CEO job will be in Jacksonville on Monday for interviews. They are: Danny Chavez, former Chief Economic Development Officer in Waco, Texas. Lara Frittz, Division Director of the Frederick County, Maryland, Department of Economic Opportunity. Colin Tarbert, formerly the President and CEO of the Baltimore Development Corp.
