The real meaning behind Van Hohenheim's name in Fullmetal Alchemist

Time of India17-05-2025

He's more than the
Elric brothers
' father—Van Hohenheim's full name hints at a rich connection to not only real-world history, but lost kingdoms and the dark truth behind
alchemy
itself.
So whether or not you know your anime, chances are you've heard of
Fullmetal Alchemist
, one of the most popular anime series of all time. It's a rich and creative world. The plot follows two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, who use the power of alchemy to look for the Philosopher's Stone in order to restore their bodies after a disastrous alchemical experiment went wrong.
There's one character in this story who plays a far bigger role than most people realize…
Van Hohenheim
, the mysterious father of the Elric brothers. Though he may initially come across as a mere supporting figure, Hohenheim's name and origins carry significant revelations that link science, history, and the nefarious origins of alchemy.
Hohenheim: The name that says it all
Van Hohenheim's name isn't just a neat fantasy moniker—it traces back to a real-life historic villain. In the original anime, Hohenheim is introduced as a faceless slave with the title of 'Slave #23' in an old kingdom named Xerxes. Following his
immortality
earned from a catastrophic act of war destroying an entire culture, he is referred to as 'Van Hohenheim' by an artificial being referred to as the Dwarf in the Flask.
This was no arbitrary name. Well, it's pretty obvious what a clear reference to a real life actual person is, if you catch my drift—Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim—otherwise known as Paracelsus—a Swiss scientist, philosopher and alchemist of the Renaissance.
The real Paracelsus: The man behind the myth
Paracelsus was among the first practitioners of chemistry to expand its use for the benefit of mankind through medicine. He thought diseases could be treated, not just as spiritual curses (as was often believed at the time), but as concrete things that could be addressed with specific chemicals and minerals. He had faith in a mythical Alkahest—a 'universal solvent' that had the power to break anything down into its ilk, without annihilating them. Sound like something you've heard?
In Fullmetal Alchemist, the Philosopher's Stone functions in much the same way—granting access to alchemy's greatest powers by violating the laws of nature. Paracelsus was among the first of men in history to understand and hypothesize this type of power.
Van Hohenheim and the fall of xerxes
In the anime, Van Hohenheim achieves immortality after all the inhabitants of Xerxes are sacrificed within a giant transmutation circle, created by the Homunculus. Though the king believed he would ultimately receive eternal life, it was the Homunculus and Slave #23 who were granted immortality with the slaughter of an entire civilization on their hands.
That goes to making Hohenheim a living Philosopher's Stone, one deep with thousands of human souls. This tragedy would define his future, and he would spend the next several hundred years trying to destroy the Homunculus, who in turn evolves into the primary antagonist, the name Father.
Hohenheim's legacy: Alchemy, redemption, and family
What makes Hohenheim such a compelling character isn't merely his tragic backstory or extensive magical powers. It's his choice to stand up for humankind. After spending enough time in life to see the true cost of immortality, he decides to defend life instead of pursuing greater power himself.
Portrayed in the image above by Maxey, as father figure, he pushes the Elric brothers to study alchemy. As a philosopher, he constantly questions the meaning of being human. Like his namesake, as a symbol, his name serves to remind fans that true wisdom and true restoration requires respect.
Here's why Van Hohenheim continues to resonate
In fact, Van Hohenheim is one of anime's most meaningful characters. His name, mythological origin, narrative, and impact link together ancestral folklore, empirical science, and hard-hitting emotional storytelling. He's not simply a side villain. He is the embodiment of the more philosophical subplots that run throughout Fullmetal Alchemist, including what happens when ambition goes unchecked, the importance of human life, and the quest for truth.
So the next time you encounter the name 'Hohenheim,' keep in mind it's more than just a name. It's a tale that reaches beyond history, science and
anime mythology

Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin Update: Savi Discoveres a Hidden Locker; Ridhi's secret gets revealed

The latest episode of Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin unfolded with intense drama and emotional highs as Savi inched closer to uncovering Rajat's secrets while grappling with threats to Ridhi's life. The episode started with Tara comforting Bhagyashree that Rajat may have left some secret savings. She said she would consult Bhaskar to get more information and requested Bhagyashree not to worry about money, promising that she would investigate the issue herself. Savi was getting more and more restless, losing the sense of time, in the meanwhile. Before she departed, she left Kiaan with Bhagyashree's care. On the investigative side, Neil told Jeetu that both Rajat and Teju had been discovered with fake rubies. While it seemed to be a major lead, Neil agreed he hadn't yet joined the dots. He told them Manjrekar had said the two victims had been in touch through messages prior to their deaths. At that moment, Neil's phone rang, as Manjrekar had called him asking for a meeting. Jeetu made an assumption that Teju's issues could have been because of her relationship with Rajat, but Neil warned him against assuming. As Jeetu went on to suggest that even Savi could have done something out of emotional distress, Neil strongly shot down the allegation. Meanwhile, Savi went to Bhaskar at the office to ask if Rajat's missing insurance documents were found. Bhaskar told her that Rajat had kept a private locker in his room. With hope, Savi went to their room and tried to open the locker. She failed many times but saw a wedding photo and thought of using their wedding day as the password. To her relief, it opened. She found an idol of Lord Ganesha, a key, and a locker number inside. She prayed to Bappa for direction in getting the missing necklace, determined to reveal the truth. Meanwhile, tensions ran high between Neil and Jeetu. Neil blamed Jeetu for breaking his trust by interpreting evidence on his own. He denied Jeetu access to his live location and wished he never shared sensitive data, pointing out that Jeetu never really trusted Teju as he did. Savi then went to the bank to open the locker marked with the key. There, she found a shredded Swiss currency note—a strange but potentially crucial clue. As minutes kept disappearing, she got a call from Maruti calling her to Gandhi Chowk. With a heavy heart, she wished for the safety of Ridhi and departed. At home, Srichand's son comforted Bhagyashree, promising to be with her always in spite of her continued bereavement. Bhagyashree could not help praising Srichand's parenting. In a clandestine phone call, Srichand confirmed with his ally that Savi was, in fact, walking into their trap. Later, Srichand's son was feeling guilty about being absent from Ridhi during her tough times. Tara told him to make things right by accompanying her to the US. She also mentioned Ridhi hadn't reached out to them after leaving, delicately insinuating disapproval. Srichand stood up for Ridhi, claiming she was not negligent. As Savi confronted Maruti for the first time, she implored him not to hurt Ridhi. Maruti laughed at her concern and gave her a dark choice—take over Rajat's criminal business to keep Ridhi safe. Savi was shocked when Maruti told her that Rajat had conducted all their money laundering transactions and had even opened a company in her name, which had been closed down. Savi refused to accept Rajat's association with crime and outrightly rejected the proposal. However, Maruti escalated the threat, warning her that Ridhi would be brutally harmed if she didn't cooperate. Desperate, Savi begged for Ridhi's life. Maruti gave her time to consider and left. Determined not to be manipulated, Savi vowed to fight back and rescue Ridhi at any cost. Meanwhile, Neil updated Nitin on his investigation, revealing that Rajat's vehicle had turned up no new clues. When Nitin mocked him for the lack of progress, Neil reminded him that the case had been handed to him only after Nitin had failed. Back at home, Savi received a horrifying package. Inside was Ridhi's bloodstained dress—chilling proof that Ridhi was in serious danger.

‘We went looking for treasure & found nostalgia at every turn'

The three musketeers walk down memory lane with the The Curse of the Philosopher's Stone prop from the filmpics: Anindya Saha What's better than one brave character on an adventure? Three, of course! Koel Mallick , Parambrata Chattopadhyay , and Gaurav Chakrabarty are back together for the third film of the franchise, Sonar Kellay Jawker Dhan. Jaisalmer's golden sands aren't just scenic but the backdrop of the desert mystery they're chasing. It's not a remake, but a sun-soaked adventure with a knowing nod to Satyajit Ray 's Sonar Kella. And behind the scenes? Think Laal maas, post-packup adda, and Parambrata pulling pranks. We caught up with the trio at Kolkata Centre for Creativity, for a freewheeling chat to know how like the Philosopher's Stone in the story, their film promises a treasure trove of fun, friendship, food, and a whole lot of detective dazzle. Koel channels her character, psychiatrist Dr Ruby "The people of Jaisalmer are great, and the food is even better. We ate a lot of Dal baati churma & ghee. These two even had Laal maas without me" – Koel Mallick Action heroes, but with a twist Though Parambrata and Gaurav have not embodied action heroes on screen, but Koel says they aced it. 'Both Bimal (Param) and Kumar (Gaurav) have done fantastic action sequences. You've never really seen them do this before, but they've done it marvellously.' To this, Parambrata said: 'An adda session went on till 2am, but we got to know it was a 9am call. I had hardcore action scenes to shoot. It was, to put it plainly, not ideal,' he grinned. Jaisalmer and Ray's golden touch Calling Jaisalmer, especially its outskirts, the most beautiful part of the country, Parambrata reflected on the nostalgia associated with Sonar Kella and said, 'Many people got to know about Jaisalmer from Sonar Kella the film.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Essen: Gutes Hören sucht 700 Testhörer für Hörgeräte ohne Zuzahlung Gutes Hören Undo Reflecting on the same train of thought, Gaurav said that he saw Mukul Bari written outside the house in Hindi, adding, 'It's fascinating to see how, even though it's a Bengali name, Mukul Bari was written in hindi. ' What's a shoot without a few pranks? Outstation shoots are an opportunity to spend more time with co-actors and to pull each other's leg, or as the two men implied, Param pulling Koel's leg! Laughing and disagreeing with this, Koel said, 'Param has a certain way of getting into shoots and then pulling pranks on the team, and thankfully this time it was not me but Shaheb (Chatterjee).' Parambrata shares fun anecdotes from the shoot "There's something so emotional about shooting in Jaisalmer. Its vast desert holds a golden memory for many Bengalis" –Parambrata Chattopadhyay A grand sleuth reunion Given their collective detective resumes – Parambrata as Feluda, Koel as Mitin, and Gaurav as Byomkesh and Topshe – stepping into the world of Bimal and Kumar felt like a genre reunion. 'Feluda has a visual reference thanks to Ray's illustrations. Byomkesh doesn't. So the audience expects tall, charismatic detectives in jackets and dhotis,' explained Param. 'With Bimal and Kumar, we've moved away from Hemendra Kumar Roy's original story after the first film. We've built a world of our own.' Koel chimed in: 'My favourites? Feluda, Byomkesh… and yes, Mitin too, since I've played her.' Gaurav went global with his picks: 'I love Feluda's charm, but Philip Marlowe is another favourite. Inspired by him, Anjan Dutt even created Rudra Sen.' Param added a contemporary name to the list: 'Cormoran Strike, written by JK Rowling under Robert Galbraith. And yes, Feluda made me feel like I was travelling the world.' Gaurav with the charmed stones that play a crucial part in the film We are all Ray fans and Sonar Kella is a part of our pop culture. Shooting in Jaisalmer connected me to the cult film. It felt like I was living a childhood dream – Gaurav Chakrabarty When the book hit the floor and the giggles began Parambrata shared a delightful behind-the-scenes moment with co-star Saheb from the shoot. He recalled a scene and said, 'There is a sequence where Saheb and I meet for the first time, and we bump into each other and the book, The Curse of the Philosopher's Stone, falls and what truly tickled me was Saheb's intense dedication to his acting. Saheb takes his actor self seriously, sometimes very seriously, so every time the book fell, he would pick it up in such a dramatic way and every time he did that, I would giggle a bit. ' Without revealing why, the three also gave us a hint that The Curse of the Philosopher's Stone is an essential part of the storyline.
