Man 'shocked' to find constrictor snake in Colwyn Bay garden
A man and his terrier were shocked to discover a large snake in the garden at their Colwyn bay home. Stephen Gowing, who lives on Pen-y-Bryn Road, Colwyn Heights, found what he understands is a corn snake on Wednesday morning.
He lives near the Welsh Mountain Zoo and contacted them. Back in the 1970s there was an escape of aesculapian snakes from the zoo, and there is now a wild population of approximately 70 adult individuals.
But they told him that in this case it was very likely someone's pet who had escaped. Stephen posted it on Facebook in the hope of finding the snake's owner.
Stephen said: "It certainly was a shock, I thought it was a large viper at first. I think my dog Hamish thought 'WTF' is that. And he has been hunting for it since like a proper terrier."
He speculated that it was between four and five feet long.
Someone is due to come this afternoon to catch and take away the snake. But unfortunately it is now AWOL.
Stephen added: "No sign of it so it could be anywhere now, apparently even up a tree."
Corn snakes are native to the US but are popular pets in the UK. They are not venomous and use constriction to kill their wild prey.
Corn snakes can grow to around 150 cm long. While they may survive in the wild in the UK - particularly in places like south east England due to the milder climate - they are unlikely to establish a wild population.
After posting his find on Colwyn Bay Notice Board he had a mix of responses, from those who were helpful to other who were simply horrified. One person said: "Oh my......hope it stays away from my garden, better get the grass cut quick."
Others noticed Hamish, with one woman saying: "The expression on the face of that little Westie in the background"
Another respondent added: "From my personal experience living in the past in an area with adders, snake won't attack and definitely don't go around gobbling up pets.
"Snakes are more frightened of humans and this one is more likely to hide away. I personally wouldn't be scared if saw it but wouldn't attempt to capture it either as I am not an expert on reptiles."

Dumfries and Galloway memorial to be unveiled to Scottish mountain rescue pioneer
A blue plaque is being installed in Gatehouse to honour Hamish MacInnes, who scaled the Matterhorn aged just 16. A special memorial is to be unveiled to the man seen as the father of Scottish mountain rescue. Hamish MacInnes was born in Gatehouse and scaled the Matterhorn at the age of just 16. He also made four expeditions to Mount Everest, founded mountain rescue teams and pioneered mountain rescue techniques. He based himself in Glencoe, where he died in 2020 at the age of 90. Now, a blue plaque is set to be unveiled at 21 Catherine Street in Gatehouse where he was born. Hamish was involved in the founding of Glencoe Mountain Rescue and was also involved in the Search and Rescue Dog Association Scottish Avalanche Information Service. He invented the world's first all metal ice-axe and the collapsible lightweight stretcher still used in various forms by today's mountain rescue teams. Hamish wrote the International Mountain Rescue Book and worked on films with stars such as Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood and Sean Connery. He received the British Empire Medal in 1962 and an OBE for services to mountaineering in 1979.

Stephen Fry gives rare insight into relationship with younger husband
Celebrity Traitors contestant Stephen Fry opened up to Rylan Clark about his marriage to Elliott Spencer on the latest episode of the BBC Sounds podcast How to Be in Love Broadcaster Stephen Fry has given a rare insight into his marriage to Elliott Spencer after more than a decade together. It's included him revealing that he has discovered aspects of pop culture through his younger husband. Stephen, 67, and Elliott, 38, have been together since 2013. The couple celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary earlier this year and the former QI host described himself as "a lucky man" in a post marking the occasion in January. The Blackadder star has now spoken about his marriage whilst a guest on the BBC Sounds podcast Rylan: How to Be in Love. He was interviewed by host Rylan Clark, 36, for the latest episode, which was released earlier today. Stephen was asked about the age gap between the couple and said he "stopped thinking about it". He went on to suggest in the discussion that a younger partner can be "more experienced in the world as it is than as it was". The comedian, who said that he has "completely different tastes in things" compared to his husband Elliott, added: "So much of what I love in music and literature and so on is from not necessarily this century. It isn't from this century." Asked how that plays out, he said: "It's wonderful." Stephen then revealed that Elliott has introduced him to rapper Kendrick Lamar and wrestling brand WWE, for example, with him sharing that he's now a fan of them himself. Stephen said of his husband: "He teaches me things I just didn't know. He introduced me to Kendrick Lamar, which was a great thing to do because [he's] I've decided is a great poetical spirit - a really remarkable figure." He continued: "So that, plus, now you're really going to laugh here, because I thought 'is he insane?' He has a great affection for, and I guess you could call it ironic, but it's real, for WWE." Stephen - who is set to compete on Celebrity Traitors later this year - said that Elliott introduced him to the "cast of characters" in wrestling, whom he described as "bloody talented". Asked if he's a fan now, he said: "I kind of am." He added that he's even bought tickets for WrestleMania in Las Vegas. Asked about the "secret" to a "successful" ten-year marriage, Stephen said that every relationship is different. He said that each relationship is "brand new" and has "never been seen before," adding: "So I can tell you how to have a successful relationship with Elliott, but that's probably not very helpful." Sharing his thoughts, he added: "All the normal human virtues, some of which are forgotten virtues, but one of the most important human virtues I think isn't even really considered a virtue, but it is one that changes the world. After the Philip Schofield scandal rocked ITV, he was chosen to reunite with his former CITV co-star Holly Willoughby as the host of Dancing on Ice. It came as Coronation Street's Sam Aston - aka Chesney Brown - won the latest outing. An ITV Spokesperson said: "Following another successful series earlier this year, Dancing On Ice will be rested in 2026 with no current plans for another series.
