Friends of murdered rugby coach take part in charity walk
This weekend friends of a murdered Met Police officer and rugby coach will complete a 30-mile charity walk in his memory.Sgt Matt Ratana was shot dead while on duty at a custody centre in Croydon, south London, on 25 September 2020. Louis De Zoysa, 26, was given a whole life term in jail for the murder.The two day walk begins in Stroud on Friday and finishes in Cheltenham on Saturday, which would have been Sgt Ratana's 59th birthday. A charity rugby match on Sunday featuring former England internationals completes the fundraiser.The money raised goes to The Matt Ratana Rugby Foundation which supports 800 children each week through rugby initiatives.
The ten people taking part in this weekend's walk will arrive in Gloucestershire from across the UK and include friends, colleagues and people who never met Sgt Ratana but have been inspired by his story since his death.It is the third annual walk as part of the Kia mārō mā Matiu - The Matt Ratana Rugby Foundation's charity walking project which aims to link places that Sgt Ratana respected and loved while also bringing together communities.The project name translates as "keep on being determined and resolute in the way Matt was" and is a nod to Sgt Ratana's Māori heritage.
Antony Weller volunteers at the foundation and is taking part this weekend.His autistic son, Henry, was coached by Sgt Ratana at East Grinstead RFC, something Henry said "changed me from a young boy to a man" adding he thinks about his coach "day by day".Mr Weller said Sgt Ratana's ability to "galvanize, encourage and enthuse anybody he came in contact with" was an "extraordinary ability".Adding that he will be "forever grateful" for the positive influence Sgt Ratana had on his son.
New Zealand-born Sgt Ratana, had coached at East Grinstead Rugby Club for three years prior to his death.In December 2020, he was awarded the Unsung Hero award at BBC Sports Personality of the Year following a nomination by the club.In the same year The Matt Ratana Rugby Foundation launched and has raised over £500,000 to date.The money is used to support 800 disadvantaged young people each week through school and community rugby initiatives both nationally and internationally.
The fundraising weekend finishes with a charity rugby match on Sunday at the 4ED Hartpury Stadium where the MND Barbarians will take on the Matt Ratana Marauders.The MND Barbarians include players from the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation and the Egg Chasers charities.Dean Richards (Leicester Tigers, England and British & Irish Lions) will manage the Marauders with Mark Atkinson (Gloucester and England) will manage the MND Barbarians. Several former England internationals and England Police internationals will take part in the match.

Lord Brittan's widow says closure of police misconduct probe ‘undermines trust'
The widow of former home secretary Lord Brittan, who was falsely accused of being part of a paedophile ring in Westminster, said her trust in the Met and the police watchdog has been 'severely undermined' after an investigation into an officer over his handling of the claims was dropped. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said last week it had stopped the investigation into former Met deputy assistant commissioner Steve Rodhouse after a 'large volume of relevant material was recently disclosed to the IOPC by the Metropolitan Police'. Mr Rodhouse was due to face a disciplinary hearing for potentially breaching police professional standards of behaviour for honesty and integrity and discreditable conduct. The allegations centred around comments made to the media in March 2016 concerning his beliefs about the honesty of two witnesses to Operation Midland – a Met investigation into allegations of non-recent sexual abuse. They also involved remarks he is alleged to have subsequently made to former High Court judge Sir Richard Henriques, who had been commissioned to carry out an independent review of the handling of Operation Midland in August 2016. In an interview with BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Lady Diana Brittan said she had hoped the investigation would bring a sense of 'closure'. She said: 'My husband was a high-profile individual, but at every level of society there are people who are falsely accused, and for them (also) it's the ruining of reputation, it's the anxiety that goes with it. 'I feel that it would have at least put a closure, to use that odd word, on the whole episode if somebody had been held to account, either for misconduct, or even for incompetence.' Operation Midland was launched off the back of lurid and false allegations made by fantasist Carl Beech – later jailed for 18 years for what a judge called 'cruel and callous' lies. The Metropolitan Police's 16-month investigation into fake claims of a VIP paedophile ring saw raids on the homes of Lord Brittan, as well as D-Day veteran Lord Bramall and ex-Tory MP Harvey Proctor. The probe ended in 2016 without a single arrest after Beech made a series of baseless allegations, including of three murders. The force was heavily criticised for believing Beech too readily despite inconsistencies in his evidence, including naming witnesses who did not exist. The IOPC said there was 'no evidence' within the material provided from the Met that there was 'any inappropriate motivation in Mr Rodhouse's comments to the media' or which 'supports that he made those remarks during Sir Richard's review'. Mr Rodhouse said the allegations made against him were 'ill-founded and incorrect'. Mr Proctor said he was 'appalled' by the 'disgraceful decision' not to proceed, adding he would be writing to Sir Mark Rowley, commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, to 'demand a meeting and an explanation'. Lady Brittan said she felt her husband's legacy had been permanently tarnished by the episode, telling the BBC: 'What I really feel very sorry about is the fact that my husband was a great public servant. 'When he died, his obituaries referred to all of this.' In response to Lady Brittan's comments, an IOPC spokesperson said: 'Our recent decision does not change our finding that – by failing to follow Sir Richard Henrique's recommendation to investigate the witnesses in his independent review of the Met's handling of Op Midland – the Met's service was unacceptable and its subsequent reviews concluding no investigation was needed were flawed. 'During our investigation we reported a potential crime to the Met, which is being actively investigated by another force.'

Woman, 33, who vanished from London's Hyde Park FOUR months ago 'is found safe and well'
A woman who went missing from London 's Hyde Park has finally been found - four months after she disappeared. Portia Vincent-Kirby, from Finchley, North London, 'dropped off the face of the earth' after spending the evening with friends on February 21. The 33-year-old - who once ran to be an MP - was spotted a month later by a family friend at the Blind Beggar pub in Whitechapel, but vanished again soon after. She is reported to have abandoned her flat and not accessed her bank card since early March while family said she had not used her passport to get out of the country. But Ms Vincent-Kirby has now been recovered 'safe and well', Metro, who have repeatedly appealed for information about her whereabouts, reports. Her mother, Janina Vincent, previously told the newspaper that the family had been 'bleeding quietly and inwardly' since her disappearance. She explained that since Ms Vincent-Kirby disappeared she had been 'dangerously close to imploding' as the horrifying ordeal took its toll on those who loved her. Ms Vincent said: 'I was thinking, ''How can this all be? How can my child just vanish?' At one point I was dangerously on edge, and had to get away so I didn't become a mess.' The Met Police were last known to be working on the theory that she may have been in Kent, where she grew up. She had also been known to live in Italy, Belgium, Greece and France. She was last seen on March 14 when she was spotted by a family friend. They did not know she was missing at the time, and they chatted for an hour in which time he bought her two drinks. The Met Police later shared footage of her at the pub - in which her mother said she looked 'very unwell and distressed'. Ms Vincent-Kirby's worried brother Max, who lives in Wigmore, Kent, previously said: 'She's got a masters' degree, she's an intelligent girl, she's not the kind of person who just vanishes. 'It's like she's dropped off the face of the earth.' Portia, who has had a number of careers, most recently worked as an administrator for an eco waste company. Before that, she worked at a law firm as a legal PA and in public relations, with her brother saying she had left her most recent role in February. She ran as the Green Party candidate for Hendon, North London, in 2019.

Boulares pleaded guilty to a separate charge of theft after he swiped a black leather hand bag from a diner at a pizza restaurant. The court heard he has 12 previous convictions for a total of 28 offences - all relating to theft. His rap sheet includes threatening to cut off Aled Jones' arm while stealing his £17,000 Rolex. The Songs of Praise presenter, 52, was out with his son Lucas when he was targeted near their home in Chiswick, South West London. Boulares - then aged 16 - pulled out 20 inch machete and repeatedly threatened Aled in a bid to steal the luxury timepiece. He told him: "Give me your f***king Rolex or I will cut your arm off." Aled handed over the £17,000 Rolex Daytona watch rather than fight with the armed robber. He and his son bravely followed the 6ft teen but when he spotted them, he snarled: "Walk the other way or I will cut your head off." Boulares was given a two year training and detention order after pleading guilty to robbery at Ealing Youth Court. But he was released from youth detention early after serving just 14 months of his 24-month sentence. He will be sentenced for robbing Genevieve on June 17 at Isleworth Crown Court. As well as Bridgerton, Genevieve appeared in historical film 1242: Gateway To The West.
