is preparing to sail to Gaza this weekend aboard a humanitarian aid vessel, a bold and controversial voyage aimed at challenging Israel's ongoing blockade, which critics warn is starving civilians and plunging Gaza into famine.
The 22-year-old will depart Sunday from Catania, Sicily, alongside other international activists aboard the ship Madleen, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC). Their mission is to deliver vital aid and draw global attention to the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
"The world cannot be silent bystanders," Thunberg said in a statement about the mission. "This silence and passivity that we are seeing from most of the world is deadly.
We are seeing a systematic starvation of 2 million people. Every single one of us has a moral obligation to do everything we can to fight for a free Palestine."
The
World Health Organisation
recently warned that Gaza is on the brink of famine, with 75% of its population facing "emergency" or "catastrophic" food insecurity. The FFC aims to bring relief and challenge the months-long blockade enforced by Israel, which has faced mounting international criticism.

Despite the humanitarian nature of the voyage, Thunberg has been met with a torrent of criticism online and in international media.
"She's sailing to Gaza like it's some sort of idyllic holiday destination," said Sky News Australia host Danica De Giorgio, naming Thunberg her "big loser of the week."
"She really is annoying at all times," De Giorgio added. Another commentator, Prue MacSween, said, "She's such an urban terrorist herself, she'll fit right in.
Let's just hope she stays over there."
On social media, many users echoed similar sentiments, with comments like "Let's hope it's a one-way voyage" and "I hope she stays in Gaza."
High-profile passengers and past attacks
Also joining Thunberg on the Madleen are "Game of Thrones" actor Liam Cunningham and European Parliament member Rima Hassan. The voyage follows a failed attempt last month by another FFC vessel, Conscience, which was allegedly struck by drones in international waters near Malta. The group blamed Israel for the attack, though the Israeli government has not confirmed responsibility.
FFC's efforts have drawn both praise and scrutiny over the years, often seen as a form of civil disobedience challenging the legality and morality of the Gaza blockade.

'They informed their seniors and were asked to remove the posters,' the officer said. Police personnel were also instructed to scan all CCTV cameras in the area to identify who was responsible. 'After scanning footage from around 50 CCTV cameras, police personnel found that a man wearing a blue shirt and black trousers came on a bicycle at around 5.30 am and put up one of the posters on an electricity pole. After scanning multiple CCTV cameras, it has been revealed that he left from one of the flats in Sardar Patel Marg,' the officer said. A team from the Chankyapuri police station reached his residence and found that the occupant works with the embassy of a Western European nation. Police left after noting down all his details. Given that the person is an embassy staffer and has immunity, the Delhi police later decided to escalate the matter and seek clarity on how to proceed. 'Senior police officers of the New Delhi range were asked by the PHQ to prepare a report for the Ministry of Home Affairs, which is expected to coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs,' a source said, adding that the report was communicated to the MHA last week and a response is awaited. Scrap approval for Dharavi redevpt masterplan: Congress MP to CM
Mumbai: Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad met chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday and submitted a letter demanding that the govt's approval given last week for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project's (DRP) masterplan be scrapped. She also challenged "Fadnavis and his Adani Sarkar" to hold a public hearing on the masterplan. Posting TOI's ground reports on local resistance to the ongoing eligibility survey in Dharavi on X, she asked how the masterplan was cleared without public consultations or inviting suggestions and objections as mandated under MRTP Act for draft development plans. The project is among the largest urban transformation schemes in the world and is being implemented by Navbharat Mega Developers Private Ltd. It is an SPV between the state govt and Adani group , which holds 80% stake. Speaking to TOI, the project's CEO, SVR Srinivas, clarified that the masterplan was not a development plan (DP) and that public suggestions and objections would be invited when changes are made in the future to the Dharavi DP, which was published in 2016. "The masterplan lays out the broad strategy. It is not a DP which gives details on land use. There is an existing DP for Dharavi which was published in 2016. Gaikwad referred to the project as a "mega land-grab". "This is not a development plan but a master-plan for the most unjust mass displacement in urban India's history," she said on X. She also called it "Adani's Dharavi Vinash Master Plan." Gaikwad said barely 40% of the survey documentation work was complete after three years, an indication of the "massive public unrest" about the project. She also asked why the survey was being conducted by "Adani's men" instead of the land-owning govt agencies, as is the case in such projects. "Threats, force, and undue pressure have been put on people to participate in the survey," she alleged. She also said the govt should put the list of those found eligible and ineligible in the public domain. In response, Srinivas told TOI the bulk of local tenements were surveyed. He said the DRP conducted a drone survey in 2023 and a LiDAR survey to map the area. He denied charges that "Adani's men" were conducting the survey to identify eligible tenements. "As in most SRA projects, the survey is being conducted by an agency. It is being financed by the Adani group. But a govt official is present during the survey and all receipts are issued by the govt official," said Srinivas.
