Liverpool crash suspect's neighbours tell of horror as they say 'it doesn't make sense'

Dublin Live4 days ago

Neighbours have been left in shock as the man suspected of causing the Liverpool victory parade crash, which left nearly 80 injured, is described as a 'nice family' bloke.
Locals from the quiet cul-de-sac where the suspect resides with his wife and three young sons expressed their disbelief to the Mirror, saying: "It just doesn't make sense." The 53 year old man from West Derby was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and drug-driving, with Merseyside Police confirming the number of casualties has climbed to 79, including seven still in hospital.
The jubilant scenes for Liverpool FC's title-winning parade were shattered on Monday evening when a Ford Galaxy careered into revellers in the city centre, sending fans flying and prams hurtling down Water Street in terrifying footage. As police maintained a presence outside his £300,000 four-bedroom house, the suspect's identity became known, although the Mirror has opted not to reveal his name, reports the Mirror.
A neighbour recounted: "It seems completely out of character. They are such a nice family, the boys are really nice and well-behaved. [He] is a fantastic guy. He came over to help us when our alarm went off once, and then did the same for our immediate neighbours too.
"It just doesn't make sense. It doesn't feel right. They are lovely. The whole thing is so sad - for his wife and children and also for the people who were injured."

The suspect, a former director of two companies, can be seen in affectionate snaps on social media, enjoying family holidays abroad and festive gatherings. Another local resident shared their shock when they saw police swarm their peaceful cul-de-sac on Monday.
They had made light-hearted comments about a neighbour being the suspect, only to be horrified when he was indeed arrested. "We turned in and there were three or four police cars at the top of our road and we just said 'Blimey, imagine if he is on our road' and that was it and now we are gobsmacked."
Police are anticipated to charge the suspect soon. The force has not disclosed what substances they suspect the driver had consumed.
In an update today, Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson stated: "I'm pleased to say that the number of people in hospital is reducing as they continue to recover from this dreadful incident.
"We continue to support those still receiving treatment and as part of our ongoing enquiries we are identifying more individuals who were injured.
"We turned in and there were three or four police cars on the top of our road and we just said 'Oh my God, imagine if he is on our road' and that was it and now we are like s***"
Among the injured was new father Daniel Eveson, who feared his small family were "going to die" when his son's pram was dragged 15ft in the chaos. The shaken dad, aged 36, said the driver was screaming and appeared "delirious" after fans pulled him from behind the wheel to prevent him from causing further harm.
"He was just screaming, 'get off, get away.' He seemed delirious, he just seemed like he didn't know where he was. It's a miracle that no one lost their lives."
Daniel, from Telford, Shrops, added it was nothing short of a "miracle" that his family survived and has now dubbed his five month old baby boy 'Super Ted' after he escaped completely unscathed. "He's our miracle. He's 'Super Ted'. I keep crying every time I hold him. I can't believe we've still got him, he didn't even break a finger," Daniel told The Mirror.
He recounted how his fiancée Sheree Aldridge, 36, is also "getting better" following the terrifying incident which saw her leg ran over by the car, leading to muscle and tissue damage as well as lacerations. Describing the harrowing moment, he revealed: "I basically held the pram but the pram got taken out of my hands and my hands went on the bonnet to try and stop the car. Then Sheree went up on the bonnet and then dropped off and then went under it.
"I looked to my side to see her and she just wasn't there," he continued, emotionally breaking down and expressing: "Oh my God it was just horrible. I just want justice."

Two dead and 192 injured as 426 arrests made in France chaos after PSG win

Tragedy struck in France following Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League victory, with two people losing their lives amidst the celebrations that turned violent with police clashes. A 17-year-old boy suffered a fatal stabbing to the chest, while a 20-year-old woman was tragically hit by a vehicle filled with supporters, according to French media reports. The aftermath of the jubilation saw a staggering 426 arrests, 417 of which occurred in Paris, and by Sunday morning, 216 individuals were in police custody, including 207 in the capital. The tensions escalated after Saturday night's match, resulting in injuries to 13 police officers and 192 civilians. Even before the final whistle, as PSG led 2-0 with goals from Achraf Hakimi and Desire Doue, officers resorted to using a water cannon on the Champs-Élysées at half-time. The police justified this action as necessary to "protect the Place de l'Étoile, as the barrier set up had been broken through by a large crowd of people not watching the match, pushing to come into contact with the police". Although the area around Place de l'Étoile was eventually cleared without incident in the early hours, other parts of the city witnessed brawls and looting. The night also saw the deployment of tear gas and the wielding of batons by law enforcement. Firefighters had their hands full extinguishing 148 fires and dealing with 46 vehicles that were torched. Police faced a barrage of missiles during the unrest, reports the Mirror. Social media was awash with shocking videos capturing the mayhem as police, armed with batons, engaged with rioters throughout Paris, close to where thousands of fans had assembled. An estimated 2,000 to 3,000 individuals had gathered on the Champs-Élysées alone. France's Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has made his stance crystal clear regarding the recent riots. He took to social media to express his thoughts: "True PSG fans are getting excited about their team's magnificent performance. "Meanwhile, barbarians have taken to the streets of Paris to commit crimes and provoke law enforcement. I have asked the internal security forces to react vigorously to these abuses. "I offer my support to the Police Prefect and all the police officers who are ensuring everyone's safety this evening. It is unbearable that it is not possible to party without fearing the savagery of a minority of thugs who respect nothing." Despite the aftermath of Saturday night's disturbances, the Champs-Élysées is still scheduled to be the backdrop for PSG's victory parade on Sunday afternoon. The event will celebrate the club's unprecedented success with large screens, speakers, and music. PSG secured a historic 5-0 triumph over Inter Milan, marking the biggest win ever in the final of the competition. Achraf Hakimi kicked off the scoring, followed by a double from young sensation Desire Doue. Inter's troubles were compounded when Khicha Kvaratskhelia added to the tally. Nineteen-year-old Senny Mayulu, hailing from Paris, completed the rout as Luis Enrique joined an elite group, becoming the seventh individual to clinch the Champions League title with two different clubs, having previously succeeded with Barcelona in 2015.

Mother tells of devastating moment she saw son lying in road at Liverpool parade

The mother of a young Liverpool supporter who was injured during the Liverpool parade crash on Monday shared her harrowing experience, recalling how she "feared the worst" while also expressing gratitude towards LFC fans for their immediate assistance. Maria and her 12-year-old son Nikitas had made their way into the city centre to catch a glimpse of their Reds heroes at the Premier League victory procession in front of The Liver Building. After witnessing the bus go by, they joined the throng of fans retreating up Water Street. Speaking to the Liverpool ECHO, Maria said: "Nikitas has been obsessed with Liverpool FC since birth and going to the parade has become a tradition for me and him, this was the third one we had been to together.. He was so excited." She went on: "The plan was to go and grab a burger in town and then get the train home. There were thousands of people walking up Water Street at this point, and we couldn't see much. We were basically looking at our feet, with our hands in the air trying to take a view videos. The atmosphere was amazing, we were having a great time." However, the joyful mood shifted abruptly, Maria explained, as suddenly the sound of a car honking and screams broke through. She described the traumatic moment: "I had limited visibility until the car literally came in front of us and hit us.", reports the Liverpool Echo. Recounting the terrifying ordeal, she said: "I went flying to one side of the car and my son went flying to the other. I managed to get up off the floor, I was panicking looking around and then I saw my son lying still on the other side of the road. That's when I started freaking out, I lost it at that point. "I saw people rush over to him, they lifted his head up and he started screaming 'mum, mum', so obviously I was thinking the worst, I didn't know what injuries he had at the time. I didn't think about being hit myself, I was just running on adrenaline." On Friday, the court placed reporting restrictions that bar the media from identifying six complainants involved in Monday's incident. Nikitas and Maria are not subject to these restrictions. Maria, who resides with her son in Liverpool, expressed her gratitude towards those who assisted Nikitas, saying: "I cannot thank the people that attended to my son enough. Passers-by, first responders, everyone. People were amazing. I wouldn't have expected less from our city. "I felt this cross between shock and distress but also immense pride in what everyone did to help. I have never felt so much love." Nikitas was whisked off to the Riva Blu restaurant by a paramedic, where others were also being tended to. His ankle had swelled up massively, and he was in considerable pain with his arm. Post X-Rays at Alder Hey Children's Hospital, it turned out he had broken his ankle and wrist. He has since been reliant on a wheelchair for mobility. Speaking about his injuries, his mum said: "It is very unfortunate for him because he is right handed, he's a gamer and an avid footballer, obviously it's half-term, it is very miserable for him. "Mentally he is not doing great. He has moments, so do I. I was crossing the road the other day and someone came abruptly into the petrol station and I jumped back and started crying. You think you are ok and then something comes in and triggers it. "On Nikie's side, because of his age, it is so frustrating, he is upset." Nikitas is due to go back to Alder Hey for an assessment on his injuries on Tuesday. He is currently wearing large plaster casts on his arm and leg but has been told these may be changed. His mother added: "He is quite excited about this because he has been told he can choose the colour of his new casts - and you know he is going for red." Paul Doyle, 53, of Burghill Road in West Derby, stood before Liverpool's magistrates and crown courts on Friday, after being charged with a series of alleged offences relating to the incident in Water Street on Monday. He is next due in court for a plea hearing on August 14.
