Iran has ‘serious doubts' over ceasefire with Israel, says ready to strike if truce broken

Iran said it is not convinced and has "serious doubts" that a tentative US-brokered ceasefire with Israel will hold, signaling it is ready to strike back if hostilities resume. This handout picture provided by the Iranian foreign ministry shows Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi mourning next to the coffin of Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander Hossein Salami, who was killed during Israeli strikes.(AFP) 'We have serious doubts about the enemy's commitment to its obligations, including the ceasefire,' the semi-official Fars News Agency quoted Iran's armed forces chief of staff, Abdolrahim Mousavi, as saying. 'We are prepared to deliver a firm response if aggression is repeated,' Abdolrahim Mousavi added. Mousavi made the comments in a Sunday phone call with Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman, addressing the fragile truce that began on Tuesday, June 24. The Iran-Israel conflict began on June 13 with Israeli strike that killed several senior Iranian military and nuclear officials, including Mousavi's predecessor — a move that shook global markets and raised fears of regional escalation. Alongside military and nuclear targets, the Israeli strikes also hit civilian areas in Tehran and other cities. The Donald Trump administration later joined the Israeli campaign with its own offensive, bombing three key nuclear sites in Iran— attacks President Donald Trump said had 'completely and totally obliterated' the Iranian atomic infrastructure. Iran-Israel ceasefire On June 24, Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that the two regional foes have agreed truce. Trump's post read: 'CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED! Officially, Iran will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 12th Hour, Israel will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 24th Hour, an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR will be saluted by the World. During each CEASEFIRE, the other side will remain PEACEFUL and RESPECTFUL. On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, 'THE 12 DAY WAR.' This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn't, and never will! God bless Israel, God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East, God bless the United States of America, and GOD BLESS THE WORLD!' In another post, Donald Trump said, 'Israel & Iran came to me, almost simultaneously, and said, 'PEACE!' I knew the time was NOW. The World, and the Middle East, are the real WINNERS! Both Nations will see tremendous LOVE, PEACE, AND PROSPERITY in their futures. They have so much to gain, and yet, so much to lose if they stray from the road of RIGHTEOUSNESS & TRUTH. The future for Israel & Iran is UNLIMITED, & filled with great PROMISE. GOD BLESS YOU BOTH!' The ceasefire hit a setback briefly as both Israel and Iran accused each other of violating it, with Israeli strikes targeting Iranian cities again. The ceasefire resumed after Donald Trump's outburst, asking both countries, particularly Israel, to not drop bombs anymore. Iran reported 627 people killed in Israeli attacks, while Israeli emergency services cited 28 deaths and over 1,300 injuries from Iranian strikes. (with inputs from Bloomberg)

Turkey spy chief talks Gaza truce with Hamas leader

Turkish Presidential spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin gives a press conference following talks with Sweden and Finland over their bids to join NATO at the Presidential Complex in Ankara, on May 25, 2022. (File photo: AFP) Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin met senior Hamas leaders on Sunday for talks on Gaza's humanitarian tragedy and efforts to reach a ceasefire, state news agency Anadolu reported. Kalin held talks with Mohammad Darwish, head of the political council of Hamas that rules Gaza, and his delegation at an undisclosed location, Anadolu said, citing security sources. They discussed the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza and Turkey's efforts to end the war and "ensure the immediate passage of aid" to the territory. They also spoke of "the need to reach a consensus among Palestinian groups during this critical period... (and) the steps to be taken to achieve a permanent ceasefire in Gaza," the sources said. The meeting came after US President Donald Trump voiced optimism about a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, saying Friday it could happen "within the next week". Mediators have engaged in months of negotiations aimed at ending 20 months of war in Gaza, where Israel stopped all food entering over two months ago, leading to warnings of famine. It has since allowed a resumption of food deliveries through the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation involving US security contractors, with Israeli troops at the periphery. Witnesses and Gaza officials have reported multiple instances of Palestinians being killed while trying to get aid. Meanwhile, Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli air strikes and gunfire killed 23 people in the war-ravaged Palestinian territory on Sunday, including at least three children. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that his services "transported 23 martyrs, including several children and women" killed in various locations around the Gaza Strip. Bassal said two children were killed in an air strike on their home in Gaza City's Zeitun neighbourhood in the early morning, adding "the house was completely destroyed". A family member, Abdel Rahman Azzam, 45, told AFP he was at home when he "heard a huge explosion at my relative's house". "I rushed out in panic and saw the house destroyed and on fire," he added. "We evacuated more than 20 injured people, including two martyrs — two children from the family. The screams of children and women were non-stop," Azzam said. "They bombed the house with a missile without any prior warning. This is a horrific crime. We sleep without knowing if we will wake up." Elsewhere, Bassal said a drone strike on a tent housing displaced people near the southern city of Khan Yunis killed five people, including a child, while four more people were killed by Israeli gunfire in Rafah, also in the south.

Israeli Civilians Storm Military Zone, Attack Soldiers, Damage Vehicles; Six Detained

Last Updated: Both the IDF and Israel Police issued strong condemnations against the violence, emphasizing that attacks on security forces will not be tolerated. A violent confrontation unfolded on Sunday night at the entrance of the Binyamin Brigade headquarters as dozens of Israeli civilians gathered in protest, leading to escalations against the security forces present at the scene. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), along with the Israel Police and Border Police, were deployed to disperse the gathering. However, tensions quickly escalated. According to the IDF, some civilians resorted to attacking security personnel with pepper spray, throwing stones, and vandalizing military vehicles. Disturbingly, there were even attempts to run over soldiers, including the battalion commander. During the chaotic scenes, one Israeli civilian sustained injuries and was evacuated for medical treatment. The circumstances surrounding the injury are currently under investigation. Overnight, IDF spokesperson confirmed that six Israeli civilians were arrested on suspicion of participating in violent confrontations. These individuals were found inside a closed military zone near the village of Malak, within the Binyamin Brigade area. As security forces approached to enforce the closure, the civilians reportedly launched physical and verbal assaults, throwing stones and damaging military vehicles. Both the IDF and Israel Police issued strong condemnations against the violence, emphasizing that attacks on security forces will not be tolerated. In a joint statement, they said, 'The IDF and Israel Police condemn any act of violence against security forces and will act decisively against any attempt to harm security personnel fulfilling their duty to protect the safety of Israeli civilians." Despite the turmoil, the IDF and Israel Police reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order while continuing their efforts to protect civilians and prevent illegal activities in the region. The incident highlights escalating tensions within certain sections of the Israeli civilian population and the growing challenges faced by security forces in maintaining order within sensitive areas.
