Canadian wildfire smoke is back: Tips to keep it out of your home

Canadian wildfire smoke is back: Tips to keep it out of your home As summer draws closer, so does smoke from Canadian wildfires and related health concerns. While the smoke may not yet be as bad as it was in 2023 when cities like New York and much of the East Coast experienced a surreal, glowing orange haze, it will likely cause an ongoing health hazard across North America for months. Whether it's Canadian wildfires or human-caused climate change leading to more fires in the U.S., odds are you'll encounter toxic smoke at some point, which prompted health experts to warn of the smoke's dangers: "If the air quality outdoors is really bad, stay indoors as much as possible," says William P. Bahnfleth, an engineer and a professor of architectural engineering at Penn State University. "If you must go out in the smoke wear an N95 mask outdoors, and avoid heavy exertion." Because staying indoors is your best protection from toxic smoke, experts recommend giving your house a wildfire checkup. Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech Linsey Marr says, "The overall goal is to keep the outdoor air outside and to clean the indoor air as much as possible." Marr and Bahnfleth offer these tips: How to filter out wildfire smoke in your home ◾ Keep your windows closed. ◾ 'If your system brings in outdoor air, turn off the outdoor air supply. Outdoor air is often brought in by an energy recovery ventilator that can be switched off independently,' says Bahnfleth. ◾ If you have central HVAC, put in the highest efficiency filters that they can accommodate (MERV 11 or higher desired), and set the fan to run continuously. Residential HVAC systems usually recirculate air and do not bring in outdoor air so by running the fan you are using the system as a whole-house air cleaner. How to improve the air inside your home during a wildfire ◾ Run bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans only as needed. They end up pulling outdoor air into other parts of the residence. ◾ If you have a portable air filtration unit, like a HEPA air purifier that removes particles from the air, run it on high. ◾ If you have a window AC unit, check to see that the filter is installed correctly. Run it with the fan on high to circulate air through the filter and remove as many particles as possible. Most units use recirculated air only and do not pull in outdoor air. A small minority have a setting that allows you to control the amount of outdoor air, and you should set these to zero. Build your own wildfire smoke air filter If you cannot buy commercial portable air filters, you can make do-it-yourself air cleaners. This could be as simple attaching a filter to a box fan, or you could make a Corsi-Rosenthal box. This kind of makeshift air cleaner was in use for wildfire smoke mitigation before the COVID-19 pandemic. If the smoke is still bothering you (coughing, tightness or burning in the nose or throat, headache), you may want to wear a high-quality mask. May 2025: A look back at last month's weather

Your StormTracker 59 team goes back into the weather files to highlight some of the most impactful weather of the month for May 2025: Warmest High Temperature: 81 degrees (May 1st) Coolest High Temperature: 54 degrees (May 26th) Coolest Low Temperature: 36 degrees (May 10th) Warmest Low Temperature: 61 degrees (May 16th) Overall, for the month of May, we were BELOW average. That's not so surprising considering how cold Memorial Day was! Our average May temperature is 61.3 degrees, and we ended up at 59.6 degrees for the month, which is 1.7 degrees below normal. May began on a warm note. The warmest temperature of the month occurred on May 1st at 81 degrees! However, eventually the colder weather set in. Outside of May 29th, the last ten days featured temperatures that were a good bit below normal and that was enough to sway the month to the below normal side. Of particular interest was the stretch from Friday, May 25th to Tuesday, May 27th, where three out of five days failed to see highs reach 60 degrees! In fact, we did not reach 70 degrees for a week straight from the 22nd to the 28th. Wettest Day: 0.73″ (May 13th) Number of Days with Measurable Rainfall: 18 out of 31 days May provided beneficial rains to many parts of the region that were flirting with drought at the beginning of spring. Most towns in May experienced above average rainfall, with Beckley coming in at about a half inch above normal at just over five inches. A lot of this rain came down quickly, however, which was not as beneficial to the water table. However, overall conditions related to drought did improve during the month of May. Memorial Day was one of the coolest holidays in recent memory! High temperatures were stuck in the 50s for most of the region. Beckley only reached 54 degrees officially! We should be in the low to mid 70s. The clouds, occasional sprinkles and overall gloom did not make for good boating or swimming weather to say the least. Launched in 2022, #WeatherTogether is a dedicated community photo album hosted by 59News and StormTracker 59 to allow viewers to submit weather photos directly to us that we can share on all our platforms on-air or online. These photos are also showcased in our web-based photo album on our site for all to see and enjoy! Any photo of interesting weather, storm damage, snowfall, pets playing in puddles or snow and the likes are all welcomed! We hope to use this to showcase the beauty of the two Virginias through the eyes of our viewers and the vastly dynamic weather we see because we think there is no place more beautiful than here.
