Ospreys' return to Usk Valley sees support pole installed
A wooden pole has been installed near a nest site in the Usk Valley to support the birds, thanks to the efforts of National Grid Electricity Distribution and the Usk Valley Ospreys group.
The perch is designed to give the male osprey a lookout point while the female incubates eggs, allowing the adult birds to safely monitor their nest and young.
Hannah Davies, team manager at National Grid Electricity Distribution, said: "We power the lives of people across South Wales, ensuring energy reaches the communities that need it every day.
"We are also committed to creating positive legacies in the communities we are proud to live and work in, which is why we were pleased to support the efforts to protect ospreys in Usk."
Extinct as a breeding bird in Wales since 1847 due to habitat loss and persecution, ospreys are now slowly returning.
The birds of prey are large, fish-eaters that breed in the UK during the summer and migrate to West Africa for the winter.
Andy King, acting chair and ornithologist at Usk Valley Ospreys, said: "Ospreys need a good place to nest that is protected and safe, so when a survey suggested that the oak our ospreys have been nesting in might not be strong enough, we were naturally concerned.
"Thanks to the support from National Grid Electricity Distribution, a telegraph pole was erected close to the current natural nest to host a potential replacement nest or a perch if needed.
"Given the charity relies on the generous help from volunteers and other organisations, it is grateful to National Grid Electricity Distribution for its assistance."
Ospreys typically mate for life and often return to the same nest for many years, making the stability and safety of their nesting site essential.
The Usk Valley Ospreys group works to protect and monitor the birds' return to the region.
A live video feed of the nest is available on the Usk Valley Ospreys website for those who want to follow the birds' progress.

Air India crash victims to be remembered at Trooping the Colour
Charles has requested the moment of reflection in tribute to the 241 passengers and crew killed, and others affected, when a Boeing 787 Dreamliner bound for Gatwick Airport came down on Thursday in the Indian city of Ahmedabad. Black armbands will also be worn by the head of state and senior royals riding in the ceremony on Saturday, also known as the King's Birthday Parade, a spectacle of military pomp and pageantry on Horse Guards Parade. The Prince of Wales, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Princess Royal pictured during last year's ceremony (Jonathan Brady/PA) On horseback and wearing the armbands will be the Prince of Wales, Colonel of the Welsh Guards, the Princess Royal, Colonel Blues and Royals, and the Duke of Edinburgh, Colonel Scots Guards. The Queen, the Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Edinburgh are expected to be among the royal party watching the event and royal fans will hope Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will join them as they did last year. Members of the royal family not taking part in the parade and who normally watch events from the Duke of Wellington's former office will not wear black armbands. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said the King requested amendments to the Trooping the Colour programme 'as a mark of respect for the lives lost, the families in mourning and all the communities affected by this awful tragedy'. In 2017 Trooping was held a few days days after the Grenfell Tower blaze and the loss of life was marked by a minute's silence, a decision taken by Queen Elizabeth II. The King requested the changes (Yui Mok/PA) The King issued a written message soon after the India plane crash saying he was 'desperately shocked by the terrible events' and expressing his 'deepest possible sympathy'. He was kept updated about the developing situation on Thursday and it later emerged there was a sole survivor, UK national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh. The minute's silence will be observed after the King has inspected the guardsmen on the parade ground. It will be signalled by a bugler sounding the Last Post and will end with the Reveille. Black armbands will also be worn by senior officers taking part in Trooping, as well as coachmen and women from the Royal Mews, driving carriages carrying members of the royal family or riding a coach's lead horse as a postilion.

What now as EuroMillions result means UK's largest ever jackpot rolls over again
The winning numbers for tonight's EuroMillions draw have been announced - but the National Lottery said nobody has won the huge £208million jackpot, which is rolling over again What could be the UK's largest-ever lottery prize is rolling over again as nobody won the £208million EuroMillions jackpot this evening, the National Lottery has confirmed. This means the eye-watering prize will be up for grabs again in the next draw on Tuesday evening - with players having a chance to win the jackpot by buying a £2.50 ticket. Tonight's National Lottery EuroMillions winning numbers are: 02, 28, 40, 43, 45. The lucky stars are: 03, 07. But even though nobody has won the jackpot, many Brits have scooped smaller prizes this evening - and 13 people have also become millionaires through the Millionaire Maker Selection. The lucky players will have one the following codes on their tickets: ZNZP75021, TNBC30976, HNBR22291, HNBG00357, XNBL07259, VNZV56928, HNBZ00729, VNBF50450, MNBC35019, ZNBP60221, JNZZ66637, HNZR99573, HMZR34844. Andy Carter, Senior Winners' Advisor at Allwyn, operator of The National Lottery, said: "Tuesday will see the incredible £208M EuroMillions jackpot still up for grabs. "A win of this magnitude would create the biggest National Lottery winner this country has ever seen. Get your tickets early to ensure you're in with a chance of a massive life-changing win. "The EuroMillions jackpot is now capped, so any money that would have gone into increasing the jackpot now boosts prizes in the next winning prize tier, meaning that we're seeing multiple UK players banking huge prizes for matching just the five main numbers and one Lucky Star. "In tonight's (Friday 13 June) draw, five UK players became millionaires after matching five main numbers and just one Lucky Star, winning an incredible £3.61M each. "Tonight's draw also saw 13 UK millionaires made through a special EuroMillions UK Millionaire Maker event – contrary to superstition, Friday the 13th has proven the luckiest date in the calendar for these lucky UK players. "All UK EuroMillions players should check their tickets and contact us if they believe they are one of tonight's lucky winners. "Each week, players help generate around £30M for National Lottery-funded projects. With over £50BN raised for Good Causes since launch, this funds hundreds of projects in every postcode area across the UK."
