Standards Slip at Fort Bragg
'On Display at D.C.'s Parade: Tanks, Drones and the Military's Identity Crisis' (Review, June 14) cites President Trump's speech at Fort Bragg in which he used a group of soldiers as stage props in a piece of political theater. The authors refer to it as 'a breach of traditional decorum.' I believe it is an egregious violation of U.S. military standards of conduct. Our armed forces have sedulously separated themselves from partisan politics—and soldiers on duty, in uniform, booing or cheering remarks in a blatantly political speech are acting in contravention to those standards.
One might note that politicians don't campaign on military installations; nor should they. That a politician would use soldiers in this way is profoundly disrespectful to the Constitution and to the troops who are sworn to defend it. It appears that refresher training in standards of conduct would be in order at Fort Bragg. Moreover, someone might inform the president of what type of speech or behavior is appropriate for uniformed military audiences.

Massie said his "side of the MAGA base" is made up of "non-interventionists" who are "tired from all these wars." President Donald Trump lashed out at Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie, a fellow Republican, over his criticism of U.S. airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites and threatened to campaign for the person running against him in the Republican primary next year. Soon after the military operation amid the Israel-Iran war was announced on June 21, Massie said the move was 'not Constitutional' on X. The day after the strike, Massie said it was 'a good week for the neocons and the military-industrial complex, who want war all the time" on CBS's "Face the Nation." Massie said his 'side of the MAGA base' is made up of 'non-interventionists" who are "tired from all these wars." Trump ripped into the lawmaker shortly afterward saying he was 'not MAGA, even though he likes to say he is.' 'Actually, MAGA doesn't want him, doesn't know him, and doesn't respect him,' Trump wrote on Truth Social on June 22. 'He is a negative force who almost always Votes 'NO,' no matter how good something may be.' Massie and Rep. Ro Khanna, D-California, had also introduced a resolution on June 17 to prohibit U.S. involvement in the Israel-Iran war without Congressional approval. Describing the bombings of the three nuclear sites as a 'spectacular military success' Trump called Massie a 'lightweight' congressman who was 'weak and ineffective.' The lawmaker was one of two Republicans who voted against his tax bill in the House of Representatives last month. 'He'll undoubtedly vote against the Great, Big, Beautiful Bill, even though non-passage means a 68% Tax Increase for everybody, and many things far worse than that,' wrote Trump. 'MAGA should drop this pathetic LOSER, Tom Massie, like the plague!'

Denver ICE claims Colorado advocacy group helped fugitive escape arrest
ICE Denver said a Colorado immigration advocacy group helped a fugitive escape when they attempted to arrest him Friday. According to ICE officials, Jose Reyes Leon-Deras of El Salvador was convicted of and wanted for child rape in Italy. The organization said that members of Colorado Rapid Response alerted him that law enforcement officers were in the area, and he escaped. ICE Denver A Facebook post on Thursday on the organization's page announced ICE officers were near Longs Peak Avenue and Martin Street in Longmont, and their volunteers were assisting those being targeted. Authorities told the public not to approach Leon-Deras and asked anyone with information on his location to contact them. CBS Colorado Rapid Response Network is an immigration advocacy group that responds to raids, deportations and ICE enforcement across the state. According to the group, volunteers observe and record the event, identify the agents at the scene and inform those involved of their constitutional rights. This incident comes amid rising tensions between immigrant communities, advocates and immigration officials. In the wake of large protests in Los Angeles and several other cities, President Trump directed federal immigration officials to prioritize deportation in Democratic run cities last week. The increase in arrests and deportations is part of the administration's crackdown on undocumented immigrants and those who enter the country illegally.
