Hayden Wilde happy to be in ‘second home' Abu Dhabi for World Triathlon Championship Series opener

The National14-02-2025

Olympic silver medallist Hayden Wilde headlines the elite men's field for the opening event of the World Triathlon Championship Series at Al Hudayriyat Island in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. The New Zealand triathlete looked set for gold at the 2024 Olympics in Paris only to be pipped on the home stretch by good friend and great rival Alex Yee of Britain in a thrilling finish. At the 2020 Tokyo Games, Wilde took home bronze after finishing behind Yee and gold medal winner Kristian Blummenfelt of Norway. Yee – who won the last season-opener in Abu Dhabi in 2023 – is absent from the field this weekend. Wilde, though, has already been safely ensconced in the capital for a month, taking advantage of the UAE weather and culture. 'I've been coming to Abu Dhabi for the last five years, and I've just felt like it's a second home for me,' the 27-year-old told The National. 'You know, it's the people, the community, and the culture that are just so pleasant to be around. You just feel so welcome, and that's why I decided to come here a month earlier. 'Obviously, it was a bit cold in Europe, so to come here in the Abu Dhabi winter, it's super nice; it's great. The weather's nice; you get to wake up, and it's probably going to be blue skies, and I'm just super excited to race here again.' Wilde believes his knowledge of Abu Dhabi, backed by a month's solid preparation at Hudayriyat, will play into his favour as he looks to win in the UAE for the first time. During his month's preparation, Wilde settled into a training routine that would see him visit 321 Sports at Hudayriyat Island where he would use the track and swim in the open water. 'I guess my past experiences, in a racing point of view, has not been the best from my performances, so I'm looking forward to moving it to Hudayriyat, where I do a lot of training, and hopefully we'll be able to get that win I've always been desiring here,' he added. 'I've got such a cool fan base around here and I'm looking forward to racing in front of them. They have got such a cool community base here. 'It's a really nice environment there because you go down there on an evening, and you've got the Abu Dhabi Cycling Club; they've got so many people racing around, and it's really, really cool just to be around that vibe.' Looking further ahead, Wilde is already planning for his next tilt at Olympic gold in Los Angeles in 2028. '[I'm] now looking forward to setting my sights on LA. It's three-and-a-half years away, so I've got some time to prepare and build and hopefully be able to bring that gold medal home; the one that I've always desired. 'It's going to be an interesting three-and-a-half years. I'm looking forward to it. To that build-up, but also, the start here in Abu Dhabi. 'The World Series is the first target. I would love to kind of start well here and then … I'm looking forward to really challenging for another opportunity at the series title.' Standing in the way of Wilde in Abu Dhabi will be a wealth of top talent including Australian world No 8 Matt Hauser and Brazilian No 9 Miguel Hidalgo. The 2020 World Championship silver medallist Vasco Vilaca (currently 15th in world) of Portugal will also be on the start line, as will world No 17 Hugo Milner, who is leading the British charge in Yee's absence. Last year's world title was won by Yee who secured his first crown after finishing third behind Wilde and Leo Bergere in the World Triathlon Championship Series finals. Yee just needed to finish in the top six to seal the championship, which he did comfortably despite trailing a group of five breakaway riders early in the cycling section of the race. Wilde won that race in Spain, finishing third in the overall standings behind Yee and Frenchman Bergere, who was second. Yee was way out in front after the season finale, racking up 4,070 points, while Bergere managed 3,728 and Wilde 3,726.

NOC discusses Dakar Youth Olympic Games entry standards with federations

The Technical and Sports Affairs Department of the UAE National Olympic Committee (NOC) held a joint coordination meeting on Thursday at the committee's headquarters in Dubai with representatives of relevant national sports federations. The meeting focused on preparations for participation in the fourth edition of the Youth Olympic Games – Dakar 2026, which will feature 2,700 athletes competing in 151 events across 25 sports. Ahmed Al Tayyeb, Director of the Technical and Sports Affairs Department at the NOC, delivered a comprehensive presentation outlining the participation requirements. These included eligibility and qualification standards approved by the International Olympic Committee and the respective International Federations, along with timelines, age-specific technical criteria, international licensing, and qualification frameworks. An open discussion followed, allowing federation representatives to raise questions and share observations. Key follow-up areas were identified to ensure optimal preparedness for this landmark Olympic event. The sports programme for Dakar 2026 comprises 25 disciplines: swimming, athletics, boxing, rugby, basketball (3x3), equestrian, judo, taekwondo, fencing, archery, table tennis, badminton, sailing, rowing, wrestling, beach handball, beach volleyball, and triathlon. During the meeting, participants discussed the detailed qualification criteria for each sport, with particular emphasis on the age requirement specifying that eligible athletes must be born between 2009 and 2010. Additional criteria were reviewed, such as the requirement for swimmers to appear in the World Aquatics rankings during the qualification window from February 1 2025 to May 1 2026. For badminton, athletes must have participated in at least one event sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation or be listed in the BWF Junior World Rankings prior to the final athlete registration deadline of September 25, 2026. The fourth Summer Youth Olympic Games will be held in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, marking the first time an African nation hosts an Olympic event. Dakar 2026 is set to be a transformative milestone, fostering development in sport, society, culture, education, and the economy—offering young athletes new opportunities, inspiration, and confidence in the future. NOC attends International Athletes' Forum in Lausanne: The UAE National Olympic Committee (NOC), represented by its Athletes' Committee, participated in the 12th International Athletes' Forum (IAF), held in Lausanne, Switzerland. The delegation included Mohammed Al Nakhy and Aisha Jasem Al Ali, both members of the Athletes' Committee. The International Athletes' Forum is the world's largest gathering of athlete representatives, organised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes' Commission. The forum convened over 400 participants to address key issues affecting athletes, amplify their voices, and exchange ideas to strengthen the support provided by their respective athletes' commissions. The programme featured a series of plenary sessions and workshops through which participants explored the range of support available from the IOC, Olympic Solidarity, and Olympic partners worldwide. Several sessions were moderated by Allyson Felix, an IOC Athletes' Commission member and 11-time Olympic medallist, who led discussions with athletes benefiting from these support programmes. The forum also included updates on major upcoming Olympic Games, including Milano Cortina 2026, Los Angeles 2028, the French Alps 2030, and Brisbane 2032. Members of the IOC Athletes' Commission presented the latest developments for each edition, joined by representatives from Milano Cortina 2026 and Los Angeles 2028. Throughout the forum, participants engaged in parallel skill-building workshops covering topics such as anti-doping, mental health and well-being, prevention of match manipulation, social media strategies for athletes' commissions, sustainability, and effective commission governance.

These are the best swimming pools for fitness in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi has no shortage of pretty swimming pools. However, not all of them are suited to swimming laps and working out. Fortunately, the below all give 'serious' swimmer-only vibes. Spanning everything from Olympic-sized training pools to outdoor lanes, your swimming era officially starts here. 321 Sports Located in the centre of Hudayriyat Island, where there's also Surf Abu Dhabi and the soon-to-be-open Velodrome, you probably won't be surprised to hear that 321 Sports has an amazing outdoor lap pool. Abu Dhabi Cricket & Sports Hub We challenge you to find a prettier place for a swim than the Olympic (50 metres) outdoor pool at Abu Dhabi Cricket & Sports Hub. The lane set-up alternates between 50 and 25 metres throughout the week. Top tip: visiting in the early evening treats you to wonderful sunset views as you tick off those laps. If you finish hungry (who doesn't after a swim?), the hearty pub grub at the neighbouring The Boundary is the perfect post-workout feed. Dhs30 (drop in), Dhs250 (ten-session pass). Open Mon, Wed-Fri 9am-9pm, Tue 9am-10pm, Sat-Sun 7am-7pm. Khalifa City, @abudhabisportshub (02 558 8331). Inviting you to perfect your techniques sheltered from the sun's rays, ladies-only sessions are offered on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays and all the facilities are modern, sleek and of the best possible quality. If you have time and leftover energy after your dip, the enormous Etizan gym is next-level epic, while the lagoon-shaped pool and private beach are absolutely stunning. From Dhs151 (day pool pass). Daily 6am-11pm. Erth Abu Dhabi, Khor Al Maqta, Al Khaleej Al Arabi Road. @etizanfitness (02 497 5229). Al Jazeera swimming pool Part of Abu Dhabi's iconic Al Jazeera sporting campus, the indoor, Olympic-sized Al Jazeera swimming pool comes with professional starting blocks and 10 spacious lanes. Measuring as deep as four metres in parts, it's ideal for advanced and super keen swimmers, while Cleopatra Sports Services (the pool's operators) provides swimming programmes and private and group lessons as well. Offering eight swimming sessions for as little as Dhs189 (to be used within one month), we don't hate that it's one of the cheapest places to swim in the city either… From Dhs189. Sun-Thu 9am-9pm, Fri-Sat 9am-7pm. Al Jiwa Street, Al Nahyan, (052 114 2222). MBZ City Sports Center Set out in Mohamed Bin Zayed City, right on the outskirts of the capital, MBZ City Sports Center is a bit of a trek for the Downtown and Reem Island crowd. However, it's absolutely worth the drive.
