Waterford 'disappointed' after alleged racism towards Shamrock Rovers player
WATERFORD FC HAVE condemned 'an allegation of racism towards a Shamrock Rovers player' during last night's SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division game at the RSC.
The Blues issued a statement this morning sharing their disappointment at the alleged incident, and confirming that they are 'fully co-operating with the authorities on the matter'.

'Waterford Football Club are disappointed to be made aware of an allegation of racism towards a Shamrock Rovers player during our SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division game on Friday 16th May,' the statement reads.
'We are a community-based football club who pride ourselves on our inclusion and are proud to welcome all to the RSC.
'The club take all reports of discrimination incredibly seriously and are fully co-operating with the authorities on the matter.
'We stand side by side with the League of Ireland and our supporters in taking a zero-tolerance approach to tackling racism within the game.

READ MORE With five changes from Friday's home defeat to Shamrock Rovers, Shelbourne enjoyed plenty of early possession and were deservedly ahead from a sweeping attack on 10 minutes. Skipper Mark Coyle, Harry Wood and Evan Caffrey were involved before Tyreke Wilson put the latter's cross back into the home area. With St Patrick's at sixes and sevens, Coote's shot took a deflection off Tom Grivosti to wrong-foot goalkeeper Joseph Anang and find the net for his third goal of the season. Shelbourne maintained their positive start as St Patrick's laboured to get a foothold in the game. It was the 23rd minute before Saints threatened for the first time to give their restless fans some cheer. With St Patrick's finally in the game, Conor Kearns was worked for the first time when having to react acrobatically to turn an inswinging ball from Jake Mulraney round a post before Kian Leavy forced a third corner in quick succession with a deflected shot from distance. But there was a let-off for St Patrick's on 34 minutes when Shelbourne striker Sean Boyd, starting for the first time in two months, sliced tamely wide dead in front of goal after incisive approach play by Evan Caffrey who had worked a one-two with Wood on the right. Clearly unhappy with his team's first half showing, Stephen Kenny made three changes from the resumption with Axel Sjoberg, Barry Baggley and Mason Melia replacing McLaughlin, Anto Breslin and Mulraney. It duly injected more energy and purpose to the home side as they chased the game. Shelbourne had three corners to defend in the opening minutes of the half while Kearns was then forced into a diving save from a Keena drive. The visitors' rearguard remained steadfast, however, as St Patrick's upped the tempo. Substitute Zach Elbouzedi had a close range effort bravely blocked while Jamie Lennon shaved the crossbar from 20 yards. In the key moment of the second half five minutes from time, Kearns made the save of the game to deny Baggley following Elbouzedi's surging run from deep as St Patrick's 17-game unbeaten home run in the league came to an end. Aaron Greene scored a 74th-minute winner as Shamrock Rovers beat Drogheda at United Park to make it seven wins in eight games to stretch their lead at the top of the table to nine points. It closed a bad day for Drogheda who, earlier in the afternoon, had it confirmed that they had lost their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on being denied participation in this season's Conference League qualifiers due to being in breach of UEFA's multi-club ownership rules, also losing out on a minimum of €525,000 in prize money. Drogheda started well with George Cooper putting them ahead after just four minutes before Rovers levelled three minutes before half-time from Graham Burke's seventh goal of the season. Shamrock Rovers extend Premier Division lead and pile misery on Drogs
SSE Airtricity Premier Division: Drogheda United 1 Shamrock Rovers 2 Shamrock Rovers piled on the misery on what turned out to be a doubly devastating day for Drogheda United with a victory that extends their lead at the top of the Premier Division to nine points. Drogheda's Uefa Conference League fate was sealed earlier in the afternoon when the Court of Arbitration of Sport upheld Uefa's decision to expel the club from the third-tier competition on multi-club ownership grounds. Graham Burke and Aaron Greene's goals in each half condemned United to further disappointment and helped the Hoops extend their unbeaten run to 10 games now. George Cooper's first goal in a Drogheda shirt was as emotive a goal as Sullivan & Lambe Park has seen all season long. The on-loan Mansfield Town defender rose highest in the penalty and planted a header into the net after Shane Farrell's corner from the left. That handed Drogheda a deserved lead against Stephen Bradley's visitors. The home team roared out of the traps just two hours after their European expulsion was confirmed. Kevin Doherty would have had to deliver one of the more difficult team-talks of his time in charge of the Drogs. Much of his squad will have signed on for the 2025 season – or joined in the off-season – on the basis that a European adventure awaited. Instead, their July schedule looks bare now. Only the visits of Galway United in the league and Crumlin United in the FAI Cup are pencilled in now. Ironically, this match had been a fixture specifically arranged with both Drogheda and Rovers' Conference League obligations in mind. How United will wish fixture their calendar still warranted a reshuffle. Rovers were level in controversial circumstances shortly before the break. Not for the first time on Monday, the Drogs felt they were the victim of an unjust decision. Assistant Emmett Dynan flagged for an Andy Quinn handball that was missed by seemingly everyone else inside Sullivan & Lambe Park – including referee Neil Doyle. The official showed Quinn a yellow card and Graham Burke fired a free kick from just outside the area through the wall and into the net, low to goalkeeper Luke Dennison's right. Earlier, Drogheda's Californian goalkeeper had saved brilliantly from Trevor Clarke and then claimed Dylan Watts's effort, with a Quinn block denying Dylan Watts in between. United themselves were playing with an intensity and hunger that was befitting of the occasion. Backed by a packed-out home crowd, whose chants included a song that cursed European football's governing body, they were keen to demonstrate they could hold their own against a Rovers side who made the Conference League knockout stages last season. Farrell and Douglas James-Taylor both forced fine saves from Ed McGinty but the hosts defended resolutely too in the face of increased pressure from the in-form league leaders. With three defenders – Elicha Ahui, Owen Lambe and James Bolger – already out, United were dealt another setback when centre back Cooper had to withdraw in the second half. Captain for the evening Darragh Markey succumbed to injury too. Just as they did when the sides last met on Boyneside in March, Rovers came from a goal down to lead courtesy of Burke and Greene. The latter finished smartly when played in by substitute Danny Mandroiu. The offside flag offered no respite, with Kieran Cruise playing the striker onside.
