Portuguese title on the line as Benfica host rivals Sporting

Sporting and Benfica lock horns in a Lisbon derby on Saturday that could decide the Portuguese league title with a game left in one of the closest races the country has seen in years.
The Portuguese capital rivals both have 78 points, with Sporting top by virtue of winning the first clash between the teams 1-0 at the Jose Alvalade stadium back in December.
If Sporting win on Saturday they will be champions, while if Benfica triumph by at least a two-goal margin they will reclaim the title with a superior head-to-head record.
A one-goal victory for Benfica would mean the title being decided next weekend when goal difference could come into play, with Sporting currently three goals better off than Benfica.
If the match is drawn, Sporting will retain the title by at least matching their rival's result on the final matchday.
With third-placed Porto long out of the title race, trailing 13 points behind the top two and level on 65 points with Braga, the Lisbon rivalry between Benfica and Sporting has dominated the campaign and not only in the league.
Benfica beat Sporting on penalties in the League Cup final in January and they will meet again at the iconic Jamor National Stadium in the Portuguese Cup final on May 25.
It will be a clash of two coaches who took charge of struggling sides in mid-season and got them back on track.
Rui Borges in late December replaced Joao Pereira, who lasted only 42 days after he was named Sporting manager following Ruben Amorim's move to Manchester United.
Amorin left Sporting in comfortable position at the top but a series of bad results forced the club to make a quick change and hire the 43-year-old Borges from Vitoria Guimaraes.
Sporting were already feeling the heat from Bruno Lage's Benfica, who was hired in September for a second tenure after Roger Schmidt was fired only four matchdays into the season. REUTERS

The French forward returned to training earlier in the day, after being struck down by acute gastroenteritis last week, but Alonso said the decision to skip Thursday's match was made to prioritise the player's full recovery. "We talked about it after training and he prefers to rest and recover properly for when we go through. And if we make it to the round of 16 he'll be available, but he was still in the recovery process and wasn't perfect for tomorrow." Mbappe, who received treatment in hospital in Miami last week, has already missed Real's 1-1 draw with Al-Hilal and their 3-1 victory over Pachuca, a win they achieved despite playing most of the match with 10 men. The Spaniards lead Group H with four points, ahead of Salzburg on goal difference, with Al-Hilal on two points and Pachuca yet to secure a point. Alonso, who recently took the reins at Real following Carlo Ancelotti's departure to manage Brazil, said they had two objectives for Thursday's game. "The first is to win and finish top of the group. The second is to continue improving as a team ahead of the knockout stage," he added. The 46-year-old Filipino boxing icon faces World Boxing Council (WBC) champion Barrios in Las Vegas on July 19, four years after his last fight ended in defeat. Pacquiao has reunited with long-time veteran trainer Freddie Roach for next month's title tilt, and spoke to journalists on June 25 as he worked out at the Hall of Famer's Wild Card gym in Hollywood. 'Four years rest has been good for me,' he said after showing off some impressive hand speed in an open pads session. 'I've been in boxing for so many decades, so it's good for my body to rest for four years. 'Now I'm back, I'm hungry to fight again. I'm hungry to fight in a big fight like this. To work hard, have discipline, everything like that. 'I've missed boxing. I feel like the passion, the fire in my eyes, working hard – it's still there.' Pacquiao also said that while his recovery times were now slightly longer, he had not noticed any drop off in his physical conditioning. 'I'm fast, I can move like I did before. I can run in the mountains with the young boxers, so I'm happy,' he said. 'I'm enjoying this training camp. There's a couple of adjustments for bodily recovery.
