The head of Tesla's Optimus program, Milan Kovac, is leaving the company, casting uncertainty over chief executive Elon Musk's humanoid robot project, Bloomberg News reported on Friday, citing a person familiar with the matter.Kovac, vice president and head of engineering for Optimus, told colleagues on Friday that he was departing, effective immediately. Ashok Elluswamy, who leads Tesla's autopilot teams, will take on Kovac's role, the report said.Musk has earlier said he expected Tesla to make thousands of Optimus robots this year.He said in April that China's export restrictions on rare-earth magnets had affected production of the humanoid robots.Tesla has shifted focus to launching the robots and its robotaxi service, with much of the company's valuation hanging on that bet."The only things that matter in the long term are autonomy and Optimus," Musk told CNBC in an interview in May. Satcom permit may force Starlink to share information on illegal kits seized
Elon Musk 's Starlink's satcom permit from the Indian government will make it mandatory for the company to share information, including details of users or owners of satellite kits seized in the country, particularly in the North-East region in the past few months, information the US company was unwilling to share earlier. India's security agencies have pointed out the misuse of Starlink devices in Indian territory, especially in the border areas, officials said. But the Musk company hasn't been cooperating in sharing details of those devices. Officials said Starlink asked the security agencies to put their requests either via the US law enforcement or international protocols. This had forced the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to write to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in March to investigate the matter, officials aware of the details told ET. The DoT is yet to submit a report to the MHA. But officials say, now that a satcom license has been given to Starlink, it will have no choice but to share those details. Else, the company could be issued a show cause notice and even face revocation of license. An ET query sent to SpaceX, parent of Starlink, remained unanswered. Since commercial satellite communication services, particularly through low earth orbit (LEO) operators like Starlink, is a new phenomenon, its impact is yet to be ascertained. Experts believe that the situation may become more complicated as Bhutan and Bangladesh are now commercially offering Starlink services and the terminals may be smuggled into Indian territory as geofencing the exact location of the international border will have limitations. Security is topmost priority when it comes to satcom and so far, none of the three licensees-Bharti group-backer Eutelsat OneWeb, Reliance Jio-SES and Starlink-have got security clearances, hobbling commercial services. While Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio-SES joint ventures have got trial spectrum and conducted demonstrations for security requirements, Starlink is yet to be given such airwaves. The US company was given a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite permit only last week. Officials said while the Jio-SES demonstrations are almost over, it is expected to take more time for Eutelsat-OneWeb. Both OneWeb and Jio-SES have satcom permits and nods from space regulator IN-SPACe for over two years. In contrast, Starlink is yet to receive the nod from the regulator.

Elon Musk's bitter falling-out with United States (US) President Donald Trump could be costly for Tesla. As long as he is persona non grata in the Trump administration, Musk, the chief executive of Tesla, will struggle to persuade Republicans not to gut climate policies worth billions of dollars to the electric car and battery company. Musk may also lose sway over federal regulators who could make or break his plans to deploy driverless taxis, which he has described as the future of the company. Tesla is already suffering steep declines in sales and profit. Its share price plummeted 14 per cent on Thursday, its biggest one-day decline, after Musk and Trump began insulting each other on social media. The stock recovered somewhat Friday, rising nearly 4 per cent, perhaps on hopes that the men would reach a truce or because investors thought the stock was now a bargain. There was always a disconnect between Musk and his Republican allies on electric cars. The domestic policy bill passed by House Republicans and being considered by the Senate will hurt the electric car market in the US, where Tesla is the largest manufacturer by far. The bill would eliminate tax credits of up to $7,500 for people who buy electric cars. It would quickly phase out subsidies for battery factories and lithium refineries, and end financial support for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The bill also imposes an annual fee of $250 on EV owners. Those measures would hurt all carmakers that sell EVs. But the Trump administration is also trying to kill regulations that are especially beneficial to Tesla, which allow it to sell clean air credits to other firms that fail to meet environmental standards. During the first three months of the year, Tesla sold regulatory credits worth $595 million, which was more than the company's net profit of $409 million. In other words, without the credits, Tesla would have lost money. 'In many years, it's the difference between being in the black and being in the red for Tesla,' said Jesse Jenkins, an assistant professor at Princeton University who studies the EV industry. He has calculated that the Republican measures would result in sales of 7.7 million fewer electric vehicles by 2030 than would be the case if the Biden administration policies remained in place.
