South Pacific tour ‘crucial' to Scotland seeding for World Cup

The Scots kick off with a match against the Maori All Blacks in Whangarei, New Zealand on July 5 before they take on Fiji a week later, with the match marking Scotland's first game on Fijian soil since 2017.
In their final game, Scotland take on Samoa in Auckland, New Zealand at the historic Eden Park on July 18.
Head coach Townsend, who named Rory Darge as captain with George Turner returning to the fold after missing the last year of international rugby following his move to Kobelco Kobe Steelers in Japan, said: 'We know that playing Test matches for Scotland and winning Test matches for Scotland is really important, so we have to pick a strong squad to take on the likes of Fiji and Samoa.

'It's an even more important issue with the world-ranking points. The World Cup draw gets made after November, so these games are crucial to make sure we've got the best chance of being in that top six and getting a better seeding.
'There's always, maybe one or two players that we decided not to select not because of form, but because we think it's not right for them to go into tour at this time.
'But other than that, it's as strong as a squad as we could select, and the benefit of having that third game of the game against Maori All Blacks will mean that we will everybody in tour will get game time, and players that maybe haven't played as much for us in the past are going to get game time on the tour and game time for Scotland.'

There are three uncapped players named by head coach Gregor Townsend – stand-off Fergus Burke, back-row Alexander Masibaka and tighthead prop Fin Richardson – although all three have been involved with the squad before.
In the back row, Matt Fagerson has been included despite missing the end of season with Glasgow through injury but there is no place for Jack Dempsey, who had been sidelined since the Six Nations win over Wales in March. Forwards Andy Onyeama-Christie and Max Williamson are back in after injury.
Townsend said he was pleased to be able to recall Turner, who has signed for Harlequins for next season.
He said: 'I think when George went to Japan, we never knew whether that would be extended and he was there until the end of his career, which would make it very difficult for him to be considered for us, given the Japan season is played during the Six Nations.
'So it was very good news that he got a club back in the UK and he was really keen to be back involved with us.'
Townsend believes some of the Scotland players who narrowly missed out on selection for the British and Irish Lions squad for the tour of Australia may yet get their chance.
He said: 'I don't want to say we hope that to happen because that means someone's been injured on the tour, but if someone does get injured, then we would like to feel that our players in a strong position. Some would have been very close to selection anyway.
'If they're playing in New Zealand or in Fiji and playing well, then that gives them an even bigger opportunity to potentially join the Lions tour.
'We've seen the weekend, unfortunately for us was Zander (Fagerson) being injured, but there will be injuries on the way to Australia and during the tour in Australia.
'But the good thing for our players and those that maybe were closer to selection is they were so keen to come out and tour. They've had long seasons, but some of these players are in great form. I look at the weekend and seeing lots of Rory Darge and Tom Jordan still playing some of their best rugby at this time of the season.
'So that's great for us as we go to tour, but it should be also good for chances of getting on the Lions tour.'
Scotland Under-20 men's assistant coach Fergus Pringle has been appointed as forwards coach for the tour, deputising for John Dalziel, who will be with the Lions.

Former Hibs and Hearts players complete UEFA Pro-Licence

The graduates received their award from Scottish FA President Mike Mulraney in the President's Lounge prior to kick off of the Scotland v Iceland game at Hampden last weekend. The award, which follows completion of the A-Licence, is the highest coaching diploma available in Europe. Over the course of the past two seasons, the candidates have completed a number of different modules, with a mixture of face-to-face learning combined with independent study and one-to-one coach development visits. The graduates attended the 2023 Under-21 European Championships, and also heard from several high-profile guest speakers, including Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho, Everton manager David Moyes and former Tottenham Hotspur and Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou. Among the group were former Hibs players Marvin Bartley, Steven Whittaker and Brian Kerr and former Hearts player Christophe Berra. Andy Gould, Chief Football Officer, Scottish FA: 'For all the graduates, this award is the conclusion of several years of dedication to their craft and we are delighted to be able to present them with their diplomas this evening. 'We understand that in an industry as demanding as football, it is not easy to juggle the required individual work with packed working schedules, so it is testament to the candidates and their steadfast efforts in completing the programme. 'We have enjoyed getting to know them as individuals and as professionals, and hope they have benefited from the talented speakers and challenging discussions over the course of the past two years. 'It's tremendous to see so many of this group, and our 2024 intake, already working at such a high level – both at home and abroad – and I am sure we will continue to see them flourish in their careers, in the different paths they decide to take.' Who are next in line for 'big' Scottish rugby jobs?

BBC Sport Scotland rugby reporter Andy Burke has been answering some of your questions after Gregor Townsend announced his summer Pacific Tour asked: What has Magnus Bradbury done to Gregor Townsend? He was the stand-out forward for Edinburgh in the latter part of the season and must be miffed to miss out on the tour. Having said that, it will give his body a rest for the coming answered: Bradbury finished the season very strongly and was a key player in Edinburgh's upward curve towards the end of the told us on this week's Scotland Rugby Podcast that Bradbury was in the mix for the summer tour, but was ruled out due to a personal issue rather than down to form. Whether he would have made the final cut, we'll never know.I thought Bradbury might have been in there. Likewise Hamish Watson and possibly Freddie Douglas, but Townsend said he hoped at least one Scottish back-row – most likely Jamie Ritchie or Rory Darge – might have made the Lions squad and the fact they didn't means competition is fierce in the Scotland asked: Should Franco Smith replace Townsend next year? I think Scotland need change but will we find out Gregor is exceeding our squad capability or holding us back? If Franco were to move to Scotland head coach who could replace him at Glasgow? John Dalziel would be my favourite for the role. I think he deserves the opportunity and has done well in previous roles in the SRU and realistically we will not be going after a big answered: This whole situation around the big coaching jobs in Scottish rugby is both fascinating and Smith is clearly considering his options right now. If it's the Scotland job he's after, he's got at least another year to wait until the expiry of Gregor Townsend's after the next Six Nations we are looking at another "what might have been" campaign, I think at that stage it would time for a new approach and Smith would be the obvious not to say a new coach is suddenly going to transform Scotland into winners. Ireland and France have better squads while England look to have turned a corner. No matter who's in charge, Scotland are going to be up against it to win a that scenario does come to pass and Smith replaces Townsend, I suspect Glasgow will look to an internal candidate to step up and and I agree that Scotland forwards coach Dalziel would be the leading worked his way up through the Scottish system, is well liked and respected by the players and will gain invaluable experience alongside Andy Farrell on this summer's Lions tour.

CELTIC CONFIDENTIAL: Can club's latest steal from Fulham hit the heights reached by Dembele... and are Bhoys prepared to push the boat out for Miller?

Callum Osmand laid it out there six months ago that his New Year resolution for 2025 was to gatecrash the world of senior men's football — and that should let everyone know that he's not interested in just making up the numbers at Celtic. The 19-year-old striker's contract at Fulham is about to expire and the Scottish champions look to be at the head of the queue for his services.
