Nirvan Barua has spent almost £2000 on meal deals after he started reviewing them for fun while working at Tesco
Meal Deal expert Nirvan (Niv) Barua
A meal deal reviewer who has tried more than 500 reveals the go-to lunch to get more bang for your buck - and the sandwiches to avoid. Nirvan Barua, also known a Niv, started reviewing meal deals for fun while working for Tesco in the pandemic and estimates he has spent £1,890 on his obsession.
The 25-year-old says he has covered more than 500 of the two million meal deal combinations but has worked out the best and worst picks. Niv, a full-time influencer, from Brighton, said: "People just love the meal deal, lunchtime is absolutely crazy in the shops now.
"I think in general a meal deal is good value for money, but they should include bigger fruit portions. Plus they've gone up more than inflation and that's a huge shame.
"I think the meal deal has been such a win with Brits because it's so efficient and avoids lots of decision making. I often wonder who thought of it - it has made trillions."
Niv said he thought meal deals should include bigger fruit portions
Niv, who has over 300,000 followers on TikTok, says going for a triple, all-day breakfast, or club sandwich is best bang for buck - as it is filling and affordable. But if you are a premium shopper, he recommends the Tesco £5 sushi for a filling budget meal.
A chicken Caesar wrap is filling but less stodgy than a sandwich, Niv said, and Tesco Brie bacon and smoked chilli jam is a tasty, more exotic, option, he said. Niv's own favourite is a sausage bacon and egg triple, sausage roll side, and cola. A plain ham sandwich topped his 'worst' list, followed by egg and cress, and then the cheese triple.
He said: "My best bang for buck options maximise the amount of food you're getting for the same money, so as many fillings as possible and, where possible, three sandwiches instead of just two.
"My sausage roll side is much more filling than a bag of crisps, and I go for the full sugar cola to get the most energy out of it. It might sound crazy but this favourite meal deal of mine is actually the nation's favourite.
"I just think if you buy plain ham or plain cheese you're not getting much for your money, and it's not as tasty: you might as well go for the most full, most flavoursome option for your money."
Niv started reviewing meal deals for fun while working for Tesco
Shops have had to adapt with the meal deal popularity by laying on more staff at lunch times Niv said. Trades people and secondary-school pupils are the main meal deal shoppers, he believes. Niv was recently invited on Joe Swash's 'Meal Deals: Behind the Bargain' which aired early this month on Chanel 4 to talk about the nations lunches.
The presenter heads around the country speaking to influencers and supermarkets to unpack the British obsession with the meal deal. Niv, who uses the RateMyMealDeal hashtag which has over 20 million views, loved being on the show.
He said Joe Swash's favourite meal deal combo of a ham sandwich, ready salted crisps, and a bottle of water is "diabolical". He said: "It was very funny! I was so shocked.
"I honestly can't think of anything with less flavour. It's a great show and I felt honoured to be asked on."
Your meal deal choices say a lot about your personality, Niv said. He said if you go for a triple all-day breakfast, sausage roll and full sugar cola then you're a "fun-loving type who embraces all the richness of life". But if you pick a plain ham or cheese sandwich, boiled egg, and water, then Niv reckons you're playing it far "too safe".
Niv's top three:
All-day breakfast triple sandwich, sausage roll, full sugar cola
Chicken Caesar wrap, scotch egg, and protein shake
Sushi, fruit pot, and smoothie
Niv's lowest rated:

TNT Sports pundit takes selfie live on TV – 'I'm going to get in trouble'
Former professional cyclist Adam Blythe was in Italy covering the Giro d'Italia for TNT Sports when he decided the perfect time for a selfie with Wout van Aert Cycling fans at the Giro d'Italia witnessed more than just the race drama as TNT Sports commentator Adam Blythe grabbed the attention following an impromptu moment with cycling star Wout van Aert. The 35-year-old British ex-pro cyclist turned heads with a provocative request to Van Aert, later confessing he'd likely get in "trouble" for his antics. Unaware that the cameras were rolling live, Blythe was spotted engaging Van Aert amidst a flurry of riders and media on an Italian thoroughfare, seeking to snap a "get a quick picture" with the Belgian star. Instructing his crew to wait, Blythe juggled his phone, setting up for what seemed the perfect selfie opportunity with Van Aert. It wasn't long before TNT presenter Orla Chennaoui caught sight of the unwitting blunder, asking: "Why is he looking at his phone?," then adding: "Is he really doing this? Adam, you're live on TV, could you leave the selfie until later?". Realisation dawned upon Blythe as he swiftly informed Van Aert they were "live on television", smoothly transitioning to a traditional interview setup with the Belgian sprinter. Though Van Aert entered the Giro with soaring expectations, initial stages proved challenging. Yet, he rebounded with victory in Siena during the strade bianche phase, a triumph he delved into with Blythe during their on-air exchange, reports the Express. "Yeah, good feeling relieved that we're almost over the mountains," he said. "Tomorrow is one of the few real opportunities for the sprinters so I think we're really focused for tomorrow." Although his main role was support, Van Aert demonstrated sublime teamwork at the famed Italian race as he helped his Team Visma-Lease-a-Bike colleague, Simon Yates, snatch the coveted maglia rosa, virtually sealing his triumph in the overall standings. Quick to exit the scene, Blythe made a swift departure from the interview, quipping: "Well, I have to go as I'm going to get in trouble." He later shared the amusing episode on Instagram with his followers, captioning it humorously: "Forgot I was on Tele". In Verres, Italy, the intense terrain put cyclists through their paces. With Sunday fast approaching, Rome gears up to host the grand finale where deeply determined riders will vie for a slice of the £1.3 million prize pool. Reflecting over his initial week's adversity, Van Aert remained upbeat, as per Cycling News. "I am very satisfied with how it has turned out. "I had hoped for a nicer start, but I have recovered well. The stage win remains a highlight and has ensured that my Giro has been successful." Meanwhile Blythe is carving out his niche as a trusted pundit on Eurosport for all things cycling, and provided in-depth reports for NBC Sports at the Tour de France in both 2020 and 2021.

Yet now she has been bombarded with comments from Instagram followers fearing for her security. It came as she posted a video of her outdoor swimming pool being created in the grounds of her stunning Essex home. Billy, 42, and her eldest daughter Polly, eight, could be seen carefully clambering down the concrete levels as they explored the space, which is yet to be filled with water. In her caption, the ITVBe star wrote: "Moments like this is everything. "We are counting down the days. Thank you for making our dream turn into a reality." Yet some were more concerned about the apparent depth of the pool - and this posing a threat for her offspring. One took to the comments to bluntly write: "No need be so deep with 3 kids." A second put: "Please get security around it like a gated area etc x" 'Gutted' Amy Childs 'cancels wedding to Billy Delbosq' after fan backlash over extreme weight loss A third quizzed: "That pool looks so deep? It's taller then Billy, why so deep? Will be lovely for you all in summer months, asl ong as you are happy, is what matters." Another then wrote: "I wouldn't have a pool with young kids." Yet others were quick to share in her happiness, and one wrote: "Living the absolute dream." A second posted: "Going to be amazing Amy." Who is Amy Childs? Amy Childs was born June 7, 1990, and is a reality star, model, businesswoman and fashion designer. She shot to fame in 2010 by appearing in ITV2's reality TV show The Only Way Is Essex. She became known for her ditsy, likeable personality and briefly dated fellow cast member Kirk Norcoss. A particularly memorable scene involved her "vajazzling" Sam Faiers in a barbie pink-coloured salon. She left the show in 2011 and took part in Celebrity Big Brother, finishing fourth. She also took part in a fly-on-the-wall documentary, It's All About Amy on Channel 5. Two years later she competed in Channel 4's daredevil show The Jump and was the second person to be eliminated. She is now said to be worth around £5million through her fashion and beauty products. WEDDING WOE Amy pushed back her plans to get married due to "last minute changes", it was revealed this week. She is said to have been left "gutted" at the recent turn of events. Sources told Closer Magazine: "Amy has had to cancel her wedding and she's absolutely gutted. "There was going to be a show around it, following the run-up to their big day, but they've had to make some last-minute changes based on what's going on in their lives." The news came just weeks after The Sun previously reported how her "perfect" wedding plans were under threat. Amy shares two of her four children with Billy, who she first met in 2000. She referred to him as her "Prince Charming" after they set eyes on each other during lockdown. In 2023, the pair welcomed twins, Amelia and Billy, into the world after a "long and exhausting" labour - yet their marriage plans have taken a back seat. HUGE CONCERN Over the last few months, the reality star's shrinking frame has also caused some concern amongst fans. In a bid to put rumours of "fat jabs" to bed, Amy has finally opened up about her extreme weight loss, which has seen her shed two stone. Speaking to OK! magazine, she said: "People don't know what is going on behind closed doors. 'I'm going through so much at the minute that the weight has fallen off me. I worry about my mum constantly. 'She's very emotional – she thinks she's going to have another heart attack. 'People think I'm not eating, but I do eat. To be honest, I do feel better when I'm a bit heavier than I am at the moment. 'There's so much going on at the minute – it's the result of pure stress." Addressing fans who had speculated she had used medication to shed the pounds she said: 'I just want to be clear that, as I've said before, I'm not using weight-loss injections." 6 Amy also clappe back at body shamers this weekend as she revealed the real reason for her weight loss Credit: TikTok 6 The 34-year-old denied using weight loss jabs Credit: Instagram

Heart stopping footage showing Ty Loerzer Fitzjones, 22, flying into the air and flipping into a somersault has been viewed more than 100 million times. Doctors were left astonished that he survived the fall without breaking any bones, or worse. He should have done it more Caerphilly but escaped with his em-mental health intact. Crackers music student Ty has been dubbed The Cheese Wizard and is being mobbed by stunned fans. Footage of his fall is quickly becoming a global sensation on TikTok and YouTube. Ty visited the cheese rolling event in Gloucestershire with pals last Monday, dressed in a long black cape and pointy hat. From Kilburn, London, Ty joined thousands of visitors from around the world who gather every year. He was determined to break the course record for the fastest descent in pursuit of a 7lb wheel of Double Gloucester. At the event, which dates back to 1826, fearless contestants aim to beat the cheese to the bottom of Cooper's Hill, even though it travels at speeds of up to 100km an hour down the 180m slope. Ty said: 'Years ago, growing up in France, I saw a Netflix documentary about cheese rolling and thought it looked like great fun. 'It was a glorious day, there was a really nice friendly atmosphere even though we had to wait an hour for The Cheese Master to start the race. 'I didn't have a plan but my girlfriend Lola sewed a chinstrap on my hat so I wouldn't lose it, and held on to my glasses so I wouldn't break them, and I just went barrelling off down the hill. 'I started running, thinking 'This is easy, I'm beating everybody' but then I lost my footing and suddenly there was a big drop, and that's when I thought 'Oh dear, this is not what I planned.' 'The next thing I remember is waking up in hospital three hours later in a compression suit and everything was a bit fuzzy.' 8 The clip of Ty's fall has been viewed millions of times on social media Credit: Dan Charity 8 Ty was rushed to hospital after the fall Credit: Dan Charity 8 After waking up in the hospital Ty headed to the pub Credit: Dan Charity When he came round after three hours, Ty was given a CAT scan and a number of cognitive tests. Astonishingly there was no sign of brain trauma, and he hadn't even fractured any bones. He was discharged without pain medication and headed to a nearby boozer where he was mobbed by tourists who witnessed his fall and were stunned to see him up and about. Ty commented: 'I've got a massive bruise on the top of my skull, cuts and scratches all down my arms and back, and I ache all over but I'm very grateful to still be here. 'I can laugh about the whole kerfuffle but it wasn't funny for my friends watching or my parents when they got the frightening phone call saying I was unconscious in the back of an ambulance. 'It's my first near death experience and it doesn't feel real yet. 'I definitely would not do cheese rolling again, I'm not going to push my luck. 'I wouldn't let anyone I love do it either, it's really dangerous and people are injured every year - it's not safe. 'It's very weird to think hundreds of millions of people around the world have watched me fall over, but I'm not embarrassed - I survived relatively unharmed.' 8 Ty escaped with only a few cuts and bruises Credit: Dan Charity
