Manager duo charged with using fake police summonses

The Star27-05-2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Two motoring programme managers have found themselves on the other side of the law, claiming trial to charges of using fake police summonses suspected to be part of a scam.
Tan Kok Ho, 43, and Denise Tan Ying Chyuan, 47, pleaded not guilty in two Magistrate's Courts here to charges of using forged saman hadir (summons to appear) notices resembling official police documents to deceive the public.
According to the charges, both accused were jointly charged with committing the offences at a shopping mall parking lot in Bukit Bintang and at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on May 10 and 11 this year.
The charges were framed under Section 471 of the Penal Code and punishable under Section 465 read with Section 34 of the same law, which provides for a maximum imprisonment of two years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Earlier, deputy public prosecutors Nurainizatul Farhana Zainal and Syafika Azwa Fikri requested that bail be set at RM7,000 in one surety for each accused, Bernama reported.
Lawyer Phang Soon Mun, representing both of the accused, appealed for a lower bail of RM3,000 on grounds that his clients, who each earn RM5,000 a month, need to support their families.
Phang said Kok Ho, who reportedly suffers from health issues, requires regular hospital visits and both the accused had cooperated fully during the investigation.
Magistrate Atiqah Mohamed @ Mohamad Saim then set bail at RM2,500 in one surety for each of the accused, while magistrate Illi Marisqa Khalizan fixed bail at RM3,500 in one surety.
Both courts fixed July 2 for mention.
A viral video previously circulated on social media showing an individual receiving a notice resembling a police summons placed on a car windscreen, sparking public concern over what appeared to be a new scam tactic.

TH Travel denies link with fake haj package programme

KUALA LUMPUR: TH Travel & Services Sdn Bhd (TH Travel) has denied it's connection with a fake programme known as "Program Haji Infaq Masyarakat" which allegedly offers TH Travel-managed haj packages priced at RM123,990 with an initial payment of as little as RM10,000. TH Travel, in a statement, said the company has never appointed any individual, external company or business entity to promote, manage or receive payment on behalf of TH Travel for any haj or umrah packages. The statement said that as a haj and umrah travel agency registered and fully regulated by the Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH), all payments related to registration and deposits for haj packages operated by TH Travel can only be made through TH's official account. "TH Travel does not offer subsidised or externally sponsored packages that require pilgrims to pay into unofficial or individual accounts. "TH Travel is not involved in any form of fundraising through cleaning companies, cake businesses or third party intermediaries," the statement said. TH Travel takes seriously the misuse of the company's name and reputation to deceive Muslims intending to perform the Haj pilgrimage. Klang boat incident: Victims believed not wearing life jackets

KLANG: All victims involved in the capsized boat incident in the waters off Tanjung Harapan here yesterday were believed not to be wearing life jackets. North Klang District Police chief ACP S Vijaya Rao said initial investigations also revealed that the boat, which was being test-driven, was operated by its owner at the time. He said the absence of life jackets had made the search and rescue (SAR) operation for the remaining two missing victims among the six people on board more difficult. 'Those who engage in activities at sea must wear life jackets, which are very useful during emergencies like this capsized boat incident, in addition to having swimming skills,' he said at a press conference at the search site in Tanjung Harapan today. Vijaya said the location where the boat capsized had been identified, but strong currents may have swept the two missing victims away and caused them to drown. Meanwhile, he said police had recorded statements from three individuals, including one survivor. 'The actual cause of the incident has yet to be determined, and the case is being investigated under Section 280 of the Penal Code,' he said. In the incident at about 5 pm, three individuals including a child died, one survived (Alvin Chang Yan Qin, 17), while a married couple remains missing. The deceased victims were Darren Gan, 3; Cheu Son Hin, 50; and Fong Yong Sen, 29, while those still missing have been identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama.
