in China, including the popular iPhones from Apple Inc., experienced a slight upturn in April. According to data released on Friday by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), shipments of foreign-branded phones reached 3.52 million units last month, a marginal increase from 3.50 million units in April 2022.
Apple remains the dominant player in the foreign mobile phone market in China, and its performance heavily influences overall sales figures. However, the company faced challenges in the first quarter of 2023, reporting a significant 9% decline in phone sales compared to the previous year. This downturn prompted Apple to take strategic actions, including price reductions, to fend off rising competition from domestic brands such as Huawei and Xiaomi.
To attract consumers, Chinese e-commerce platforms have initiated substantial discounts on the latest iPhone 16 models, with price cuts reportedly reaching up to 2,530 yuan (approximately $351). These measures are part of Apple's efforts to maintain its foothold in the smartphone-centric Chinese market, which is increasingly dominated by local manufacturers that offer high-quality devices at competitive prices.
Analysts suggest that while the increase in sales figures for April is a positive indicator, it is essential for Apple and other foreign brands to continue innovating and adjusting their strategies in response to evolving consumer preferences and aggressive pricing from domestic competitors. As the market dynamics continue to shift, the performance of foreign-branded mobile phones in China will be closely monitored in the coming months.

Foreign inflows into equity, debt markets rise to Rs 30,950 crore in May
After heavy outflows in the last eight months, inflows by FPIs into equity markets in May have hit the highest levels since September last year on the back of de-escalation in Indo-Pak tensions, possibility of a trade deal with the US, a weakening US dollar and better than expected corporate earnings quarter for most companies. In May, FPIs bought equity for Rs 19,860 crore through the exchanges, according to NSDL data. The change in FPI strategy in India which began in April continued in May, leading to a marginal 12 bps rise in their ownership in listed companies to 17.5 per cent on a sequential basis. FPIs remained sellers in India in the first three months of 2025. The big selling in stocks began in January (Rs 78,027 crore) when the dollar index peaked at 111 in mid-January. The intensity of selling declined and FPIs turned buyers in April with a buy figure of Rs 4,223 crore. Foreign players pulled out Rs 2.16 lakh crore from Indian equity market between October 2024 and March 2025. Total FPI inflows into equity and debt amounted to Rs 30,950 crore in May with debt inflows at Rs 12,155 crore. There was heavy FPI inflow of Rs 29,044 crore into the debt market in March this year. Despite the inflows in May, FPI outflows from equity in 2025 so far were at Rs 92,491 crore. 'Global macros like declining dollar, slowing US and Chinese economies and domestic macros like high GDP growth and declining inflation and interest rates are the factors driving FPI inflows into India,' said a leading research firm in its report. India's better-than- expected GDP growth in Q4 of FY25 at 7.4 per cent is an indicator that growth is rebounding and this can lead to revival of corporate earnings in FY26. While FPIs are likely to continue their investment in India, at higher levels they might sell since valuations are getting stretched. In May itself, India witnessed bouts of sharp selloff from FPIs on account of Indo-Pak tensions and the latest being rising US Treasury yields. On May 21, FPIs sold Indian equities worth Rs 10,000 crore in a single day. 'In the near term, there can be some headwinds on account of global geopolitical uncertainties but long-term outlook for Indian continues to remain intact with the markets continuing to factor in strong growth for Indian economy,' says Vaqarjaved Khan, senior fundamental analyst, Angel One Ltd. According to the NSE, FPI ownership in NSE-listed companies had been declining since March 2023 — barring a brief uptick in September 2024 — amid continued volatility in foreign flows. This reversed slightly in March 2025, with FPI share rising 12 bps quarter-on-quarter to 17.5 per cent, driven by gains in private banks where FPIs have high exposure. Excluding financials, FPI share fell 26 bps to a 13-year low of 15 per cent. FPIs also increased exposure to microcaps, with their share in companies outside the Nifty 500 hitting a 10-quarter high. Their holding in the Nifty 50 stayed flat at 24.3 per cent, while it fell 28 bps in the Nifty 500 to 18.5 per cent. Despite the recent resurgence in FPI inflows, near-term uncertainties such as geopolitical risks, rising US Treasury yields, any slowdown in earnings in India can hurt FPI inflows, Khan said. India's long term growth story backed by consumption and inhouse manufacturing continues to remain intact. Meanwhile, India's corporate earnings over the next 3-5 years is expected to compound at a growth rate of 14-17 per cent. Hence, whenever valuations become attractive, FPI inflows during such periods will see a huge boost like the recent one in April and May, Khan said. FPI flows in May till date were positive for all key emerging markets except Thailand. India, Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam witnessed inflows.

New World's Bond Coupon Delay Raises Three Questions
(Bloomberg Opinion) -- In the bond world, not calling a perpetual is bad. But not repaying coupon? That's way worse. Hong Kong-based New World Development Co.'s decision to defer interest payments on four perpetual notes took investors by surprise. While this is by no means an action of default — a perpetual resembles an equity when business conditions get tough — it's nonetheless a highly unconventional move. As such, the real estate developer, controlled by the family empire of tycoon Henry Cheng, must clarify the confusion it has created among investors and bankers. There are three main questions worth asking. First, why is New World deferring its coupon payments now? It's negotiating with banks HK$87.5 billion ($11.2 billion) of refinancing in the hope of completing a deal by the end of June. As of Friday, lenders had committed more than HK$35 billion, or about 40% of the total. It's worth noting that this deferral could save the developer only about HK1.8 billion annually. By all means, not paying perpetual coupons is a credit-negative event, especially in the eye of Chinese banks, which might be stepping in to replace foreign lenders if the latter cut their credit lines. On the mainland, most perpetuals are issued by creditworthy state-owned companies, such as big banks and industrials, which habitually redeem at the first reset date and repay all interest. So why is New World rocking the boat when it should put on a performance and behave like a pristine investment-grade borrower instead? This brings us to the second question: How tight is New World's liquidity position? Companies with decent cash flow might want to keep paying coupons until the mega loan deal is sealed first. Up to the company's surprise announcement, investors could have been forgiven for thinking that the developer was troubled but not distressed. After all, New World has got some strong tailwinds. A recent plunge in Hong Kong's benchmark borrowing rate is boosting demand for home purchases. Last week, a luxury residential project in the city's southern district, which New World owns 50% of, pulled in more than HK$1 billion. For the fiscal year ending June, Bloomberg Intelligence expects the company to beat its Hong Kong sales target of HK$11 billion by 10%. Business is picking up in mainland China as well. The developer has raised its sales target by 27% to 14 billion yuan ($2 billion). Going forward, investors will be skeptical of New World's liquidity position. As of 2024 year-end, it had HK$21 billion in cash. But the company does not disclose what percentage is being held in mainland China, which has various capital controls. In other words, money onshore may not be easily transferred to Hong Kong for debt repayments. In addition, is that seemingly large cash pile from five months ago still unrestricted? Third, will there be any spillover? The Cheng family is probably trying hard to ring fence and ensure New World's woes don't affect other parts of its business empire, such as Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Ltd., or toll roads operator CTF Services Ltd. But for the rest of us, the more pertinent question is whether Hong Kong's reputation as a creditworthy community is still intact. Unlike mainland Chinese companies that don't have a long track record and thus have to swallow stringent lending conditions, the city's blue-chip names have for decades enjoyed lenient and cozy relationships with creditors. Unfortunately, New World's surprise coupon deferral is eroding that mutual trust and raising some very uncomfortable questions.
