USC narrowly loses out on Director's Cup to Texas
For more than 30 years, the Director's Cup has been presented annually to the top overall athletic department in the country. Remarkably, despite having the third-most national championships of any school, USC has never won the award. This year, the Trojans had their best ever finish, but were narrowly edged out for the trophy, finishing in second.
Texas won the 2024-2025 Director's Cup, finishing with 1255.25 points. USC finished just behind, coming in second place with 1253.75 points.
The Director's Cup has been presented annually since 1993. Remarkably, despite having the third-most national championships of any school across all sports, USC has never won the award.
Somewhat ironically, the Trojans' best-ever finish in the competition came in a year that their football and men's basketball teams both had rather poor seasons. While women's basketball and baseball had successful campaigns, it was largely USC's Olympic sports teams carrying the torch (pun semi-intended).

The 28-year-old will play the Olympics for the first time in his career after USA Hockey announced today, June 16, that Eichel was named to the 2026 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team. Eichel is one of the first six Americans added to the preliminary roster that will be competing at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games in February. It's the first time in Eichel's career that he will be playing at the Olympics. Advertisement Eichel has plenty of experience playing with Team USA and most recently participated in the 4 Nations Face-Off, where he recorded four assists in four games. Prior to the 4 Nations Face-Off, Eichel represented the Americans at the World Championships, World Juniors, U-18s and the U-17s, winning a gold medal at the U-18s, a silver at the U-18s and a bronze at the World Championship. Eichel is accompanied by Toronto Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews, Florida Panthers' Matthew Tkachuk, Ottawa Senators' Brady Tkachuk, Vancouver Canucks' Quinn Hughes and Boston Bruins' Charlie McAvoy. Nico Porteous will not defend Olympic halfpipe title, will remain active in skiing

Nico Porteous, one of two New Zealand athletes to win a Winter Olympic gold medal, will not defend his ski halfpipe title from 2022 at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games as he focuses on other parts of his skiing career. 'I've loved representing New Zealand. Wearing the fern and competing for my country has been the most incredible experience and I'm so proud of what I've achieved," Porteous, 23, said in press release. "This wasn't an easy decision to make, but I'm excited to do something new, and I feel like the time is right for me to look for a new challenge and new opportunities.' Advertisement Porteous plans to stay active in skiing through filming, product development and other competitions outside of the halfpipe, such as Natural Selection. "I still love skiing, and I want to keep skiing to the best of my abilities and keep pushing the boundaries of what's possible in the sport," he said. "Ultimately, I'm ready for something new. What that looks like I'm not exactly sure, but over the past few seasons I've enjoyed filming and producing videos, as well as working on gear and product design." In 2018, Porteous took halfpipe bronze in his Olympic debut, becoming at 16 the youngest skier to win an Olympic medal and the youngest New Zealand athlete to win a Winter or Summer Olympic medal. In 2022, he landed back-to-back double cork 1620s on his first of three runs in the Olympic final. His 93-point score held up to take gold over Americans David Wise and Alex Ferreira, who had gone one-two in 2018. Advertisement Earlier in the 2022 Games, Zoi Sadowski-Synnott became the first New Zealand athlete to win a Winter Olympic gold medal, taking the women's snowboard slopestyle event. Porteous last competed at a September 2024 World Cup in New Zealand, placing 31st. He also won X Games Aspen titles in 2021 and 2022 and the World Championships in 2021, also in Aspen. Another man from New Zealand won the world title in ski halfpipe this past March — 18-year-old Finley Melville Ives — ahead of Americans Nick Goepper and Ferreira. Connor McDavid among first six players named to Canada's Olympic hockey team

After making his mark with a series-winning goal in the 4 Nations Face-Off, Connor McDavid will get a chance at Olympic gold for the first time in his career. McDavid was among six names released by Hockey Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee on Monday. The other Canadian all-stars include: • Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins • Nathan MacKinnon, Colorado Avalanche • Cale Makar, Colorado Avalanche • Brayden Point, Tampa Bay Lightning • Sam Reinhart, Florida Panthers This will be McDavid's first Olympic appearance, as NHLers haven't played in the tournament since Sochi in 2014. 'We are excited to announce the first six players who will represent Canada at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games next February, as these are six world-class players and leaders that are deserving of this recognition,' said Canada GM Doug Armstrong. 'Sidney, Nathan, Cale, Connor, Brayden and Sam provide a strong foundation for a successful team and have been proven winners at all levels of their professional and international careers, and we look forward to all six being key contributors to our team as we look to accomplish our goal of winning Olympic gold.' McDavid has represented Canada before, but not on such a major stage. Other than gold at this year's 4 Nations Face-Off, the Oilers captain won gold at the 2013 World U18 Championship, the 2015 World Junior Championship and the 2016 World Championship. There is some unsettled business among Team Canada teammates this week, however. Both Reinhart and McDavid are still battling it out on opposite sides of the rink in the Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers. Game 6 in that series goes tomorrow in Florida. The Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics run Feb. 6-22 next year.
