Track Champions League scrapped after four years
Track cycling's Champions League has been scrapped four years after its launch. Established in 2021, the event was started in a bid to attract new fans to the sport with light shows, music and a faster format. The Track Champions League featured the world's best endurance and sprint cyclists competing across multiple rounds in different European cities, but only three hosts staged events in 2024 - one in Paris, two in Apeldoorn and two in London. In a statement, the sport's world governing body, the International Cycling Union (UCI), and its media partner Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) said they would instead "revitalise" the existing Track Nations Cup to become the Track World Cup. "Over the next three years we will focus on coverage of the UCI Track World Cup," UCI president David Lappartient said."I am confident that track cycling will continue to grow in popularity, leading up to and beyond the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games."
The Track Nations Cup has previously been a three-round competition but only one was scheduled this year, in Konya, Turkey, earlier this month.Its rebranding as the Track World Cup will also feature three rounds, with its programme consisting of Olympic events as well as the elimination race. The series will be used in part as qualification for the World Championships and the Olympic Games. The most recent Champions League event took place at Lee Valley VeloPark in London in December, but had to be abandoned after a crash into the crowd involving Great Britain's Katy Marchant.

Roman Abramovich has broken his silence on the pain of being forced to sell Chelsea as a consequence of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Three years after the Russian billionaire was forced to cut ties with the Premier League club, the British government are still threatening to go to to court to ensure the proceeds reached victims of the conflict in Ukraine. Abramovich was sanctioned in the wake of Russia's invasion in 2022 and sold two-time Champions League winner Chelsea to a consortium fronted by Americans Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital for £2.5 billion in May of that year. In a new book, 'Sanctioned: The Inside Story of the Sale of Chelsea FC' the 58-year-old, who funded and presided over two decades of unprecedented success at Stamford Bridge, addresses the pain of effectively being ousted from his position. When asked on Chelsea and the future, Abramovich said: 'Perhaps one day there would be a situation where I could attend a match and say a proper goodbye, but nothing more than that. 'I don't have any interest in any role in a football club, certainly not a professional role. 'There might be something where I could help with academies and youngsters, giving greater opportunities to people from difficult backgrounds, if there were an initiative that could make a difference. 'But as for ownership or a professional role at a club, I am done with that in this lifetime.' Abramovich said before the sale that net proceeds would go to a charitable foundation 'for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine.' But the money remained frozen in a bank and the British government said it was still to make its way to those in need. A joint statement by Treasury chief Rachel Reeves and Foreign Secretary David Lammy earliest this month confirmed the government was ready to mount legal action. 'The government is determined to see the proceeds from the sale of Chelsea Football Club reach humanitarian causes in Ukraine, following Russia's illegal full-scale invasion. We are deeply frustrated that it has not been possible to reach agreement on this with Mr Abramovich so far,' they said. 'While the door for negotiations will remain open, we are fully prepared to pursue this through the courts if required, to ensure people suffering in Ukraine can benefit from these proceeds as soon as possible.' Abramovich was sanctioned when the British government targeted what then-Foreign Secretary Liz Truss described as 'oligarchs and kleptocrats' with close links to Russian President Vladimir Putin and 'complicit in his aggression.' More Trending The funds from the sale, however, still belong to Abramovich even though they are frozen. They cannot be used or moved without the issue of a licence from the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation. Arsenal have been handed another major obstacle in their efforts to sign Benjamin Sesko with Saudi Arabian clubs joining the race for his signature. The Gunners are eager to sign a centre forward this summer and while talks took place to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP, Sesko has emerged as their top target. Manchester United have been credited with interest in the 22-year-old but it appeared Arsenal would have a relatively clear run to sign the Slovenia international this summer. While they have been in talks with RB Leipzig for a number of weeks, there is thought to have been no major breakthrough with the German side standing firm on their £70million valuation. Fabrizio Romano now reports clubs from the Saudi Pro League have joined the race to sign Sesko ahead of Mikel Arteta's side. Man Utd advised to sign £40m Arsenal target in Marcus Rashford swap deal
Manchester United should try to agree a stunning swap deal with Aston Villa involving Marcus Rashford, according to Old Trafford hero Wes Brown. Rashford spent the second-half of last season on loan at Villa Park and has been linked with a permanent move to the Midlands club. Ruben Amorim sanctioned Rashford's departure from Manchester United and is unlikely to offer the England international an olive branch this summer. Rashford is reportedly 'dreaming' of a move to Barcelona after coming close to joining the La Liga giants during the January transfer window. But the 27-year-old is not against returning to Aston Villa, where he largely impressed and enjoyed playing under Unai Emery. Villa have been told Rashford will cost £40m this summer and the club are currently weighing up a proposal after missing out on Champions League football on the final day of the season. With Aston Villa likely to renew talks with Manchester United, Brown has advised his former club to enquire into the possibility of signing Ollie Watkins as part of the deal. Amorim is determined to sign a new No. 9 this summer and Watkins, who has scored 87 goals in 223 appearances for Villa, could be a cheaper option than Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko. Watkins was heavily linked with a move away from Villa Park in January after Arsenal made a surprise £40m bid but the 29-year-old ended up staying put. United were keen to sign Liam Delap before he joined Chelsea for £30m but Brown believes Watkins would be an even better option than the former Ipswich Town forward. 'Manchester United need a striker who has goals and although Liam Delap might not get you 20 just yet, he is a great player and has all the attributes to be a success,' Brown told BoyleSports. 'Personally, having Rasmus Hojlund up front on his own looked very difficult for him, he got a lot of stick and looked to have no back up whatsoever. 'He cannot be left in that position again because it's not fair on him, Chido Obi came in who is another young player, but United have to get a striker this summer. 'Marcus Rashford will be a difficult permanent signing for Aston Villa, as there are contractual obligations and a certain level of money that he wants. 'Therefore, I'm not sure it will be beneficial for Villa to sign Marcus or if it is even a possibility. However, one thing is for sure, Rashford will bring value and talent to any team he is playing for. 'Signing Rashford is a lot easier to say than to actually get done, but if he did sign for Villa, he would be fantastic for them as he has been since January.' Speaking to Metro 'Delap would've been a good player for United, but I'd go for experience. Manchester United need a striker and Ollie Watkins has shown us that he can do that in the Premier League. 'Would Aston Villa swap Watkins for Marcus Rashford? I'm not sure because they still trust Watkins and would need to find a big replacement. 'They would want a striker who can get 20 goals and those are hard to come by. Look at United and how Rasmus Hojlund has struggled, but a striker like Watkins would be perfect for United.' Rashford has made more than 400 appearances for boyhood club Manchester United but a permanent move away from Old Trafford appears to suit all parties. Five-time title winner Brown added: 'Marcus Rashford is going to have to start playing really well wherever he goes, first of all. 'He's done well at Aston Villa, he's got his head back in the game. But he still has two years on his contract at United. More Trending 'If he is looking to move, he would obviously want a big club and Barcelona would be ideal. But it's a lot of money. If the club is looking to get rid of him, they're probably wanting to get paid as well. 'It's not an easy one to sort out, talking from my heart, I think it would be brilliant if Ruben Amorim and Marcus could sort things out. 'When he's on form, it's a player United have really missed. I hope they can sort it out in a way that everybody gets what they want. 'For Marcus personally, he just needs to get his head down and play some football now.
