England look to Brydon Carse but hope Jofra Archer will feature in India series
England will hand the new ball to Brydon Carse against India on Friday, but the role could soon be taken off him by the long-awaited return to the Test format of Jofra Archer.
Carse, usually more of an old-ball bowler in first-class cricket, will make his first home Test appearance in the series opener at Headingley, Leeds and will share opening bowling duties with the experienced Chris Woakes in the absence of a number of England fast bowlers, including Archer, Gus Atkinson and the fastest of them all, Mark Wood.

'I know it's a different format and a different colour ball, but Brydon looked very threatening with the Kookaburra in the white-ball series against West Indies leading up to this,' said Stokes on the eve of the series. 'I think the skills Josh Tongue has makes him better suited to first change but Brydon looks more the part of a new ball bowler.'
But it is the imminent return of Archer, who has suffered a number of injury setbacks since making the last of his 13 Test appearances early in 2021, that is exciting England as they embark on a run of 10 Tests against India and Australia that will define the Bazball era.
The Barbadian-born Archer, who made a huge impact after qualifying for England in 2019, is due to play for Sussex in their County Championship match against Durham on Sunday and, if he comes through that, could be in line to make his England red-ball comeback in the second Test against India at Edgbaston at the beginning of July.
'It's really exciting for England and, most particularly, Jofra that we now have a plan to get him through to being considered for Test selection again,' said Stokes. 'He's been absolutely desperate to put that white shirt on again.
'Before this season started, he would randomly text me saying 'Zim?' (asking to be selected to face Zimbabwe in the first Test of this summer) but I was like: 'Let's just hold on. I know you're in a good place but let's not rush into it.'
'He's had a horrific time with injuries but he's in a position now where we're looking to build his overs and loads to hopefully be considered at some point for this series, which would be great.'
The England captain backed the decision to retain Ollie Pope at No 3 ahead of Jacob Bethell, adding: 'It would be remarkable to choose someone else over a player who has just scored 171 (against Zimbabwe) and that's pretty much all I need to say about that.'

Sunderland close to appointing Roma's Florent Ghisolfi as director of football
Sunderland are close to appointing Florent Ghisolfi as the club's director of football. Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman will remain at newly-promoted Sunderland and will work alongside Ghisolfi, who was Roma's sporting director for 2024-25. Ghisolfi had interest from other clubs including Newcastle United, who are assessing candidates to succeed outgoing sporting director Paul Mitchell, with interest also from Juventus, Fiorentina and Saudi Arabia. Advertisement A former midfielder, Ghisolfi led Roma to a top-five finish in Serie A for the first time in five seasons last term, missing out on Champions League qualification to Juventus by one point. The 40-year-old, who decided to leave Roma this summer, had his first sporting director role at Lens, who won promotion back to Ligue 1 during his time at the club before later qualifying for the Champions League. Ghisolfi worked at Nice with INEOS between 2022 and 2024, where head coach Francesco Farioli had wished to retain his services before Roma saw off interest from Monaco to secure his signature last summer. Sunderland are back in the Premier League for the first time since 2017, having defeated Sheffield United in last month's Championship play-off final. ()

Report: Germany star Wirtz flies to England for Liverpool medical
Germany's Florian Wirtz (L) and France's Manu Kone stand on the pitch after the UEFA Nations League soccer match between Germany and France at Stuttgart Arena. Federico Gambarini/dpa Germany star Florian Wirtz has flown to England to carry out his medical ahead of his big-money transfer to Liverpool, according to reports in German media. The Bild newspaper said a private plane took off from Cologne airport on Thursday afternoon to take the 22-year-old to Manchester, from where he will be driven to Liverpool to complete his signing from Bayer Leverkusen. Advertisement The deal for the young forward could be worth up to €150 million ($172 million) including bonuses, making Wirtz the most expensive signing in Bundesliga and Premier League history. Only Paris Saint-German's moves for Neymar and Kylian Mbappe have ever carried a higher transfer fee. Wirtz is expected to sign a contract with the Reds until 2030. The German international had been a major target for top European clubs, including Leverkusen's Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich, but the attacking midfielder is set to land with the Premier League champions.

Carlitos plays marathon man again at Queen's Club
Top seed Carlos Alcaraz has been pushed all the way by fellow Spaniard Jaume Munar in a thrilling contest before clinching a 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 7-5 win and advancing to the Queen's Club Championships quarter-finals. It was only 11 days ago when Alcaraz came out on top in his epic five-and-a-half hour French Open final against Jannik Sinner, and while this second round clash in London may not have reached those same dizzying heights on the hottest day of the year, the British crowd were still served up an enthralling battle on Thursday. The world No.2 was never quite at his stellar best and was a break down in the deciding set -- but he showed his strength of will once more, stretching his winning run to 15 matches, the longest streak of his career, after a marathon three-hour 23 minute duel. "What an effort!" 😱@carlosalcaraz moves to a career-best 15th victory in a row after 3hrs 23mins on court@QueensTennis | #HSBCChampionships — ATP Tour (@atptour) June 19, 2025 "3:30 hours? Were we on clay?" scribbled Alcaraz on the TV camera lens after being relieved to get through. "It was a really tough battle that we had today," he added on the court. "He's a great competitor and he showed how difficult it is to beat him." Alcaraz, the 2023 champion, looked well in control as he eased to take the opening set, and after saving four break and set points at 5-4 down in the second he forced Munar to a tiebreaker. The pair traded early breaks with neither player holding serve over the first four points, before a Munar double fault allowed Alcaraz to take a 5-4 lead. He smashed an ace but then hit a double fault of his own on match point. Munar made him pay this time to force a deciding set. After Alcaraz went 2-0 up, the French Open champion was broken in his next two service games and Munar grasped a 4-2 lead. But Alcaraz was not done yet, and two more breaks of serve sealed a hard-earned victory as he continued his preparations for Wimbledon, where the Spaniard will be aiming to complete a hat-trick of triumphs. "Of course he's got it" 😁@carlosalcaraz conjuring up some early magic on Andy Murray Arena@QueensTennis | #HSBCChampionships — ATP Tour (@atptour) June 19, 2025 "I'm proud of the level I showed today. It's just my second match on grass this year," Alcaraz said. "There were moments I struggled a lot mentally and physically. I still don't know how I'm standing here. But I'm really happy I've given myself another chance in the quarter-finals." Alcaraz will face either French lucky loser Arthur Rinderknech or American Reilly Opelka next up. British No.2 Jacob Fearnley reached his first ATP Tour quarter-final with a 6-3 2-6 6-2 win over French qualifier Corentin Moutet, and will next face Alex de Minaur's Czech conqueror Jiri Lehecka, who beat Canada's Gabriel Diallo 6-4 6-2.
