Bourita Meets Syrian FM in Mecca, Reaffirms Support for Syria's Unity
Doha – Morocco's Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita met with his Syrian counterpart Assaad Hassan Al-Chibani in Mecca on Thursday. The meeting signaled a potential thaw in diplomatic relations between the two Arab countries.
During the meeting, Bourita reiterated Morocco's support for Syria's unity and national sovereignty. 'The Kingdom of Morocco follows closely the important developments in Syria,' Bourita stated, stressing Morocco's backing for the Syrian people's aspirations for stability and development.
The talks took place on the sidelines of the seventh joint ministerial meeting between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Morocco, held in Mecca on March 6. The gathering, chaired by Kuwait's Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali Abdullah Al Yahya, addressed strategic partnerships between the GCC and Morocco.
This diplomatic engagement follows King Mohammed VI's recent message of congratulations to Syria's transitional president Ahmad Al-Sharaa in early February.
The King expressed Morocco's 'steadfast commitment to regional peace, stability, and prosperity' while reaffirming that Morocco's position 'has always been and remains one of support for the Syrian people in achieving their aspirations for freedom, peace, and stability.'
Morocco's latest diplomatic outreach marks a departure from its earlier position. Rabat had closed its embassy in Damascus in 2012 during the Syrian civil war, citing fundamental disagreements with the Assad regime.
Following the recent fall of the Assad government on December 8, discussions have begun regarding the potential reopening of Morocco's embassy in Damascus.
The developments also mark a break from a history of strained and tense ties. Under the previous Assad regime, Syria had supported Algeria during the Sand War and maintained backing for the separatist Polisario Front.
Recent discoveries revealed Iran's use of Syrian territory to train Polisario Front members during Assad's rule.
The GCC meeting in Mecca also addressed the Western Sahara issue, with Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi referencing UN Security Council Resolution 2756 from October 2024 regarding Western Sahara.
The GCC emphatically reinforced its unwavering support for Morocco's sovereignty over the territory.
Syria's transitional government, led by Al-Sharaa, has indicated plans for a four to five-year transition period to establish necessary electoral infrastructure and implement political reforms.
The new administration's stance on regional issues, including the Western Sahara, remains to be defined, though its opposition to the Iranian axis suggests a potential shift from the previous regime's positions.
The diplomatic maneuver has garnered sweeping regional endorsement, with multiple Arab countries — including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Jordan, and Yemen — throwing their weight behind Syria's transition process.

Morocco Leads Arab World in Official Holidays
Doha – Morocco ranks among the most generous Arab countries when it comes to official holidays, with 17 days of paid leave annually in the public sector, outpacing other countries in the Maghreb and Middle East region. In a written response to a parliamentary question from the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS), Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Minister Delegate for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, revealed that Morocco observes 17 official holidays per year. 'Morocco has a satisfactory number of official holidays during which work is suspended, with 17 days compared to 13 days in Egypt, 9 days in Algeria, and 15 days in Tunisia,' El Fallah Seghrouchni stated. These official holidays are governed by Decree No. 2.77.169 dated February 28, 1977, which established the framework for religious and national holidays in public administrations and institutions. Read also: Schools Across Morocco Urged to Continue Classes After Eid Al Adha Holidays The private sector, meanwhile, benefits from 13 official paid holidays according to Decree No. 2.04.426 issued in December 2004, which regulates paid holidays in industrial, commercial, professional, agricultural, and forestry enterprises. 'Several private institutions adopt the same number of holidays as the public sector,' the minister noted. Regarding religious holidays specifically, El Fallah Seghrouchni pointed out that Eid al-Adha celebrations in various Muslim countries range between one and three days, similar to Morocco's practice. Any potential revision of holiday regulations would require comprehensive stakeholder involvement, according to the minister. 'Studying the possibility of revising the decrees regulating official and religious holidays requires involving all public and private sector stakeholders to address the issue from various economic and social perspectives,' she explained. The minister also mentioned that Moroccan legislation provides for exceptional leave allowances. 'The Moroccan legislator has established, alongside the administrative leave system, exceptional leave or permission to be absent, granted to employees who provide family justifications or exceptional reasons, not exceeding ten days per year,' she elaborated. 'This system of leaves collectively aims to ensure decent working conditions for employees on one hand, and guarantee the continuity of public services on the other.' She further noted that Article 3 of Decree No. 2.05.916 issued in July 2005, which determines working days and hours in state and territorial administrations, allows for exceptional work stoppages by decision of the Head of Government. On several occasions, such as during Eid al-Fitr, work has been suspended exceptionally to facilitate citizen travel and reduce traffic congestion on various national road networks coinciding with these religious occasions. Israel Prepares to Assassinate Palestinian Civil Defence Spokesperson
Rabat_ In an ongoing effort to silence anyone who dares to expose or document its genocide in Gaza, the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) have accused Palestinian Civil Defence spokesperson Mahmoud Bassal of being a Hamas fighter—an outright attempt to justify their plan to kill him. In a statement that effectively serves as a death threat, the IOF claimed Bassal, who has served in Civil Defence since 2008, has misused his role as a spokesperson by 'spreading false and unverified information to international media, falsely attributing war crimes to Israel, and presenting fabricated data.' The IOF then revealed their true intent by acknowledging that Bassal's disclosures reached the global media and caused 'a severe distortion of the reality on the ground,' undermining their narrative, delegitimizing him, and isolating him before executing their final step. Their 'evidence'? A list written in Arabic, which they claim is a 'Hamas membership list'—a fabrication that exposes their blatant disregard for truth and their willingness to manufacture whatever is necessary to legitimize further crimes. This pattern has become increasingly evident since October 2023, as Israel's impunity and the unconditional support from Western powers embolden its efforts to spread propaganda. It has been enough for Israel to produce any document in Arabic for Western media to run it as 'evidence,' regardless of its credibility. This tactic echoes the November 2023 storming of Al-Rantisi Hospital in Gaza, when the IOF baselessly claimed the hospital was a Hamas base. During that raid, former IOF spokesperson Daniel Hagari displayed a list he claimed was a Hamas rota for guarding Israeli captives—only to reveal a calendar with days of the week written in Arabic, a relic of decades of anti-Arab propaganda and Islamophobia. The IOF's recent statement not only targets Bassal but also aims to tarnish the entire Civil Defence in Gaza. Familiar with Israel's playbook of smear, isolate, and assassinate, the Civil Defence issued a firm response, condemning the accusations as incitement. 'We reject the inciting Israeli allegations against the Civil Defence and its official spokesperson, and we warn of their malicious intent,' declared the press release. The organization also revealed that it has received numerous messages from international media outlets, stating that Israel has contacted them directly, urging rejection of the Civil Defence's narrative. 'We strongly warn against falling for the dangerous smear campaign orchestrated by the Israeli occupation army, which seeks to bring our institution and its official spokesperson under a calculated smear campaign, the consequences of which we deeply fear.' The Civil Defence called for urgent intervention from the International Civil Defence Organisation, human rights bodies, and press freedom advocates to prevent this campaign of lies from succeeding. 'We urge them not to fall for Israeli black propaganda or its inciting media [ ] Our mission is clear: to provide humanitarian service to those enduring a genocidal war for many months,' they affirmed. This smear campaign mirrors Israel's tactics against UNRWA, a vital lifeline for Palestinian rights. Israel falsely accused UNRWA personnel of involvement in the October 7 attacks, without providing substantial evidence, leading to cuts in Western funding—further crippling Palestinian resilience. In October 2024, Israel accused Hossam Shabat, who had been one of the last journalists reporting on the atrocities in northern Gaza, of being a Hamas member—before intentionally killing him in March, revealing once again the genocidal intent behind Israel's actions. As Israel's campaign of genocide in Gaza intensifies, every Palestinian with a phone has become a journalist, exposing Israel's true face to the world as a genocidal, apartheid state that has long maintained a façade of being 'the only democracy in the Middle East' while systematically erasing Palestinian existence. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Israel has so far killed at least 184 journalists in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon since October 2023—the deadliest period for journalists since records began in 1992. Their absence is painfully felt across social media and news outlets, as many Palestinians are too starved, injured, or silenced to document their own annihilation amid Israel's unchecked brutality.

Polisario protests La Vanguardia's report linking Sahrawis to Sahel terrorism
An article published by La Vanguardia linking Sahrawis from the Tindouf camps to the leadership of terrorist groups in the Sahel has sparked outrage from the Polisario Front. In a letter of protest to the Spanish newspaper, the group's representative in Spain condemned the analysis as «damaging to the image and reputation of the Sahrawi cause, as well as to the broad solidarity movement that supports it across Spain». Abdellah Arabi urged the paper to «correct its mistake», after it reported that Sahrawi youths born in the Tindouf camps, some of whom had taken part in the « Holidays in Peace » program, had gone on to join armed groups operating in the Sahel. According to a Moroccan source who spoke to Yabiladi, the article was a key item on the agenda during an emergency meeting of the Polisario's permanent General Secretariat, held on Sunday, June 9, at the Rabouni camp and chaired by Brahim Ghali. No official statement was issued following the meeting. This latest controversy comes just weeks after the Polisario sought to contain the fallout from statements by one of its so-called «ministers», who had called for attacks on tourists and investors in Western Sahara. At the time, the group's representative in Spain dismissed the remarks as «alleged statements attributed to a minister of the SADR», claiming they were part of a disinformation campaign in Moroccan media aimed at discrediting the Polisario, which it described as «the sole legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people».
