'Devastating loss': Randolph police officer hit and killed by train in Abington

Yahoo17-03-2025

ABINGTON — Sgt. Scott Sherman, a Randolph police officer with 23 years of service, died Sunday after being struck by a train.
According to the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office and Transit Police Department, an MBTA commuter rail train hit a pedestrian at the Birch Street railroad crossing just before 8 p.m. Sunday. A first responder from Abington declared the man dead at the scene. He was later identified as Sherman, 56.
The DA's office said the crossing gates were working. Transit Police said the train's lights and bells were activated and that the train sounded its horn. The investigation so far found no mechanical problem with the train and that it was going below the 70-mph speed limit.
Randolph Police Chief Anthony Marag mourned the loss in a Monday statement.
"Scott was very funny, extremely intelligent and well-respected," Marag said. "His compassion, professionalism and unwavering commitment to public service made a lasting impact on all who had the privilege to know and work alongside him."
Sherman joined Randolph Police in 2002, Marag said. He made sergeant in 2022. His assignments spanned from working with young people to aiding elders. He served the Randolph Public Schools as a school resource officer and was also the department's elder affairs officer, Marag said.
Sherman's roles included patrolling Randolph High School, according to a 2008 profile in the Quincy Patriot Ledger. According to that story, he was from Quincy and would have been a lawyer if he hadn't gone into public safety.
"The entire Randolph Police Department mourns this devastating loss," Marag said. "We will stand together to support each other and Sgt. Sherman's family as we navigate this difficult time. His legacy and contributions to this department and our community will never be forgotten."
Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan said his agency and the entire MBTA organization "offer our most heartfelt condolences to the decedent's family and loved ones."
The incident remains under investigation. At press time Monday, no details were yet available regarding funeral and memorial services.

'Ringleader' charged with burglaries of MLB, NFL stars' Seattle homes, prosecutors say

'Ringleader' charged with burglaries of MLB, NFL stars' Seattle homes, prosecutors say "House being robbed at gun point with my family in it isn't what anyone wants for a birthday gift," former Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman said in March on X. Show Caption Hide Caption Former NFL player Richard Sherman's home robbed at gunpoint Former NFL player Richard Sherman posted video on X of his Washington home being robbed at gunpoint. Washington state authorities have charged and accused a man of robbing the homes of multiple professional Seattle-area athletes, including former Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman and Mariners center fielder Julio Rodríguez. The King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office announced the charges on June 6 against the 21-year-old man, whom they did not identify. County inmate records, along with reporting by ABC News and NBC News, say that Earl Henderson Riley IV was booked on June 6 for four counts of residential burglary, one count of first-degree robbery, one count of eluding police and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm. The prosecuting attorney's office alleges the Seattle man burglarized the homes of Sherman, Rodríguez, Mariners pitcher Luis Castillo and Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell, who is from the area. Prosecutors say the alleged serial burglar is being held in the King County Jail on $1 million bail. 'Scary situation' In March, Sherman commented on the burglary of his home in an X post, saying, "House being robbed at gun point with my family in it isn't what anyone wants for a birthday gift. Scary situation that my wife handled masterfully and kept my kids safe. If anyone has any info that can help find these people please reach out." In the post, Sherman included video of the burglary, which shows three masked and hooded men jumping out of his home's window and fleeing, two of them carrying bags. 'The King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office worked for weeks on multiple search warrants that led to the filing of these felony charges today,' King County Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion said in a statement. "All people deserve to feel safe in their homes, and our office will continue to hold people accountable for criminal behavior.' Alleged burglar in custody deemed the 'ringleader' The investigation into the burglaries began in early 2025, the prosecuting attorney's office said, adding that it was working with six different police jurisdictions in the case at one point. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed against others who are believed to be involved, according to the prosecutors. Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Gary Ernsdorff called the individual in custody the "ringleader of this bunch," and by charging him, it allowed authorities to "interrupt this burglary crew," he added. "That doesn't mean our work is finished. We still want to go and identify everybody who was involved and see if there are additional people that we can have sufficient evidence to charge," Ernsdorff said in a statement. The prosecuting attorney's office said the alleged burglar was previously held in custody and released by the court on Feb. 7, after pleading guilty to three separate robbery counts. Court records reviewed by USA TODAY show Riley pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree robbery on Jan. 27, stemming from an arrest on Aug. 15, 2023. According to the prosecuting attorney's office, the individual in custody has another pending King County Superior Court case, which includes the eluding police and first-degree unlawful firearm possession charges. Like Riley, the office said the alleged burglar was booked into the King County Jail on June 6. Jonathan Limehouse covers breaking and trending news for USA TODAY. Reach him at JLimehouse@

Former Mass. state sen. pleads guilty to stealing gun from constituent, lying to police

Former Massachusetts State Senator Dean Tran has pleaded guilty to charges connected to stealing a gun from a constituent and lying to police about it, the state attorney general's office announced Tuesday. On Monday, the 49-year-old Fitchburg resident pleaded guilty to larceny of a firearm, misleading law enforcement in a criminal investigation and filing an application for a license to carry containing false information, the attorney general's office said in a press release. Tran is a Republican who served as a Fitchburg city councilor from 2005 to 2017 and represented the Worcester and Middlesex District from 2017 to 2021. In June 2019, Tran 'used his position of trust as a public official to take advantage' of a constituent by convincing her to sell him her late husband's firearm collection in exchange for $1,500, the attorney general's office said. The constituent soon changed her mind about parting with the guns, and Tran returned them to her. But within days, Tran returned to the constituent's home when she was there alone and stole a Colt .45 pistol that was part of the collection, the attorney general's office said. When interviewed by police about the theft, he tried to mislead investigators by giving conflicting stories about what happened. Tran also made false statements on his application to renew his firearms license in May 2019, the attorney general's office said. When Tran was first charged in the case in 2022, he also faced charges of larceny over $250 from a person over 60, obtaining a signature by false pretenses with intent to defraud and stealing by confining or putting a person in fear. These charges were dropped in exchange for a guilty plea, the attorney general's office said. Tran's jury trial on the charges was set to begin Monday. Instead, he was sentenced to six months in state prison on each of the three charges, but this time will be served concurrently with the federal prison sentences he is in the process of serving time for already, the attorney general's office said. In November 2023, Tran was arrested and charged with 25 counts of wire fraud and three counts of filing a false tax return. He was accused of fraudulently applying for pandemic unemployment benefits and hiding more than $50,000 in income from his paid consulting job from tax authorities, among other misdeeds. In September 2024, a federal jury convicted Tran on 23 of the charges against him. In February, a judge sentenced him to a year and a half in prison, two years of supervised release and to pay over $50,000 in restitution and fines, according to the Massachusetts U.S. Attorney's Office.
