Bulgaria's government survives no-confidence vote brought by pro-Russia party
SOFIA — Bulgaria's government has survived a parliamentary vote of no-confidence brought by a pro-Russia opposition party over a supposed failure in the country's foreign policy.
The motion brought by the Vazrazhdane party and backed by two small nationalist groups criticised the government's pro-Western stance, its support for Ukraine and ongoing sanctions on Moscow.
The move was defeated in the 240-seat parliament with 150 votes against and 54 in favour.
Before the vote, analysts predicted the outcome, citing that the majority of Buglaria's lawmakers support the country's pro-European orientation.
Bulgaria has been a member of the EU since 2007.
"For Vazrazhdane, the vote is a tool to amplify Russian narratives in the hybrid war against Bulgaria — a war Moscow wages with disinformation and subversive political tactics," political analyst Ilian Vassilev said.
The centre-right party GERB, which leads the coalition government, condemned the no-confidence motion as an attempt to derail the adoption of the euro at the beginning of 2026, which would consolidate Bulgaria's European integration.
Speaking to the media after the vote, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said the motion's defeat has "confirmed Bulgaria's European perspective and democratic development, which is what most of the Bulgarian people want". — Euronews

German defense minister visits Ukraine for talks on weapons support
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has arrived in Kyiv to discuss military support for Ukraine in its war with Russia, the DPA news agency reported on Thursday. Pistorius plans to hold talks with Ukrainian government representatives about further weapons aid from Berlin, according to the report. 'We are doing everything we can to support Ukraine so that it can defend itself and get into a position where Russia is prepared to enter into serious negotiations,' Pistorius said ahead of his departure. MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that special attention in the country's new arms program should be paid to the nuclear triad — land-based, sea-based and aircraft-launched weapons. Putin's remarks, broadcast on state television, were made at a meeting of senior officials devoted to the country's arms industry. 'Undoubtedly, special attention should be paid to the nuclear triad, which has been and will remain the guarantee of Russia's sovereignty and plays a key role in upholding the balance of forces in the world,' Putin said. A total of 95 percent of weapons in Russia's strategic nuclear forces, he said, were fully up-to-date. 'This is a good indicator and, in essence, the highest among all the world's nuclear powers,' he told the gathering.
