A group of Union County deputies were having breakfast at a Waxhaw restaurant when their morning break quickly turned into a life-saving mission.

The restaurant's owner told Channel 9's Gina Esposito that he's glad the deputies were there because he's not sure what would've happened if they hadn't been.
Union County Sheriff's Office deputies were having breakfast early on May 4 at Stacks in Waxhaw.
'The waitress came over and asked us if we could go help this guy that was choking,' Deputy Sarah Tucker said. 'He was a booth over from us.'
A 78-year-old man was struggling to breathe.
'One of our sergeants, Sgt. Williams, performed the Heimlich (maneuver) on him,' the deputy said.
The food was dislodged, and the man could finally breath.
Union County Sheriff's Office spokesman James Maye said they are thankful the deputies were in the right place at the right time.
'It goes without saying, I don't think they expected to do that in that moment, but I'm glad they were there because this situation could've ended differently,' said Maye, public information officer.
The deputies said they do annual life-saving training, including how to save a choking victim, CPR, and how to use an AED.
The waitress declined to speak with Esposito about the rescue.

FBI offers $15K reward after 12 hurt, 1 killed at Catawba County house party
Investigators were still collecting evidence Monday after 12 people were wounded and one was killed in a mass shooting that happened at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday on Walnut Acres Drive in Catawba County. The FBI is offering a $15,000 reward leading to the identity, arrest, and successful prosecution of suspects. Channel 9's Dave Faherty spoke with a witness who said a gunman fired from a wood line above the home. Deputies are looking into the possibility the gunmen walked in from the road. The FBI, State Bureau of Investigation and Catawba County sheriff's deputies were back at the scene Monday morning. Shawn Patrick Hood, 58, was shot and killed inside the home at the party that had people as young as 16 years old. There was a coverage charge for people without identification, according to a Snapchat post. Investigators said multiple weapons were used in the shooting and as many as 80 rounds were fired. No one has been charged in connection with the shooting. One of the shooting victims spoke with Faherty. Some people at the party returned fire possibly saving lives, said Quentin Malone, who still had a bullet lodged in his ankle. 'I was trying to run and get out but since there was so many people, people were just falling over each other and tripping over each other,' Malone said. 'I just, honestly, I froze. I didn't know what else to do. And if there weren't other people there that started firing back, I honestly think it would have been way worse than what it was.' Alcohol Law Enforcement is involved in the investigation and agents are looking into the possibility of people drinking underage. Investigators are expected to be at the scene until Wednesday. Family sues Myers Park nursing home after resident fatally hit by city truck
A family is suing the city of Charlotte, a garbage truck driver, and the operators of Myers Park Nursing Center, alleging the facility's neglect led to the death of a 68-year-old resident who was struck and killed by a garbage truck after leaving the center unnoticed. ALSO READ: Nursing home patients forced to move due to health, safety issues This is the latest development for the troubled Myers Park Nursing Center, previously known as The Citadel. The same facility just lost Medicaid status due to health and safety concerns. Family members are suing the city, truck driver, and the nursing home owners in the hope of getting answers as to how it happened. The nearly 200-page lawsuit cites serious concerns for resident safety. The lengthy wrongful death lawsuit filed earlier this month claims that Myers Park Nursing Center is responsible for the death of 68-year-old George Marks, citing severe neglect, violations and misconduct. The suit states that in October of 2023, Marks, who was cognitively impaired and wheelchair-bound, left the Myers Park nursing facility unnoticed and made his way to an intersection outside the center in his electric wheelchair where he was hit by a city garbage truck. The suit says the damage left 'anatomical devastation' and Marks remained 'conscious, aware, in agony, and alone.' Later that month, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Division of Health Services Regulation (NCDHSR) cited Myers Park Nursing Center for its failure to supervise Marks, and for failing to even 'attempt' the implementation of basic safeguards to protect him. It's not the first complaint against Myers Park Nursing Center, previously known as The Citadel at Myers Park, or its owning entities. The lawsuit cites concerning NCDHSR reports, including a resident with an amputation who was found face down in a transport van. It's also not the first time Channel 9 reported on these citations. For years we've reported on neglect allegations by the company. In March, Channel 9 reported the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare (CMS) terminated its agreement with the facility after it allegedly failed to follow health and safety requirements. The attorney representing the Marks estate told Channel 9's Hannah Goetz: 'This case raises serious concerns about resident safety and systemic failures at the facility. The complaint speaks for itself. At this time, we are focused on the legal process and will not be making further comments.'
