Edward Burroughs elected as youngest Prince George's County Council Chair
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. () — History was made Tuesday during a Prince George's County Council meeting when was elected chair of the council.
Born in 1992, Burroughs is the youngest person to hold the position.
The seat was held by District 5 Council Member Jolene Ivey, who . The gavel exchange is typically done in December, but the council was unable to elect a new chair at the time.
'We as a body came together to do it today,' said Burroughs. 'For me and other young people in this county, [this shows] that if you can go out and aggressively fight for what you believe in, you can still make it.'

Meanwhile, District 7 Council Member Krystal Oriadha will serve as vice-chair for the rest of the fiscal year. Oriadha said electing a chair was crucial for the council.
'We set a tone for the residents, that they understand that the council is united, that we're ready to get to work,' said Oriadha, in part.
After Tuesday's change of leadership, Council Member Wala Blegay introduced the Federal Workers Assistance Act.
The act will feature job placement support as well as food assistance for federal workers impacted by the Trump administration's layoffs.
Blegay said that this bill is important not just for the workers but for the county as a whole.
'We do need to provide some support. We don't want our folks to go under,' said Blegay. 'All of the pressures and the fact place after being, displacing that job. We hear the anxiety, and we want to show that we are supporting them.'

Senate Republican calls July 4 ‘false deadline' for megabill
Sen. John Curtis (R-Utah), a moderate Republican, called July 4 a 'false deadline' for Republicans to pass their megabill and said it's more important for the Senate to get it done 'right' than fast. In an interview at Politico's Energy Summit in Washington on Tuesday, Curtis said he's confident the bill would eventually pass. But, he added, 'I can't tell you what it's going to look like or when it's going to pass.' He signaled a lightly less optimistic note on whether it would pass by the GOP's self-imposed July 4 deadline. 'Well, let me just say, I think a lot of us would be surprised if it passed by July 4,' Curtis said. 'I think that's a false deadline,' he added. 'I don't think that we need to put a specific deadline on it. Let's get it right.' Other GOP senators have also publicly and privately voiced doubts about meeting the July 4 deadline that Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) is shooting for as Senate Republicans remain divided on a number of hot-button issues. On Monday, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said he thinks the deadline is still realistic. 'We certainly hope, I believe, we can still meet that,' Johnson said. 'It's up to the Senate, the bill's in the Senate's hands now. But I spoke with Leader Thune as recently as last night, he's feeling very optimistic.' At Tuesday's summit, Curtis said he thinks the House-passed version unfairly rolls back some of the energy tax credits in Biden-era Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). He said some of those tax credits 'have run their life cycle' but it's important to 'be thoughtful in how we phase them out.' 'Banks, investors have invested billions of dollars based on the rules of the road, and you have employees who have set careers based on these things,' Curtis said. 'Let's not destroy careers and things like that,' he added. 'Let's give people a chance to adjust. So in the case of those that it's time to phase them out, I think how we phase them out matters.' Greta Thunberg rips Trump: ‘The world needs a lot of more young angry women'
Activist Greta Thunberg on Tuesday went after President Trump over comments in which he said he believed 'she has to go to an anger management class.' On Monday, Trump called Thunberg 'a strange person' and 'a young, angry person' after Israel intercepted a boat she was on carrying aid for Gaza, which has seen mass infrastructure destruction and death amid Israel's war versus Hamas. 'I don't know if it's real anger. It's hard to believe, actually, but I saw what happened. She's certainly different. Anger management, I think she has to go to an anger management class. That's my primary recommendation for her,' the president said of Thunberg. After being deported from Israel on Tuesday, Trump's comments about Thunberg were noted to her at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport. 'I think the world needs a lot of more young angry women to be honest, especially with everything going on right now,' Thunberg said. In international waters, early Monday, Thunberg and others were taken into Israeli custody while they attempted to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza. 'The 'selfie yacht' of the 'celebrities' is safely making its way to the shores of Israel,' the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs said previously on X. 'The passengers are expected to return to their home countries.'
