Gukesh blunders against Caruana as Carlsen wins Norway Chess for seventh time

Economic Times10 hours ago

Stavanger (Norway): Five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen clinched his seventh Norway Chess title after American Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana did a good turn by defeating star India player D Gukesh to grab three full points in the final round of Norway Chess here. It was an unforgettable day for Gukesh, who after being in a disadvantageous position against 2018 Norway Chess Champion Caruana tried to stage a comeback but with the Indian running out of time, he committed and immediately know his chances had evaporated with in a second. Gukesh offered a handshake with just two second left on the clock and then covered his face with his hands in frustration. Defending champion Carlsen ended the tournament with 16 points after drawing with the other Indian in the tournament, Arjun Erigaisi, from an unfavourable position. Caruana finished second with 15.5 points, while Gukesh ended third - the second time he has finished in as many Norway Chess tournaments - with 14.5 points. Erigaisi was fifth with 12.5 points.
In the women's section, overnight leader and two-time world blitz champion, Ukraine's Anna Muzychuk won the title with 16.5 points despite an Armageddon tie-break loss to India's R. Vaishali in the final round. Muzychuk's draw in the classical game against the Indian earned both players a point each, while Vaishali secured another half a point by beating the Ukrainian in the Armageddon sudden death to finish on 11 points. The Norway Chess format gives three points for a classical win. In the event of a draw, the players share one point each, which is followed by the Armageddon tie-break, where the winner earns another half point. Had Vaishali defeated Muzychuk -- who was on 15.5 points overnight -- in the Classical game, she would have deprived the Ukrainian Grandmaster of three points, which would have propelled Koneru Humpy to the title had the two-time world rapid champion too got the better of Chinese world champion Ju Wenjun in the Classical game.
Unfortunately, Humpy, who was on 13.5 points overnight after round 9, could only manage a draw with white pieces to earn one point. She got another half point by overcoming Wenjun in the Armageddon tie-break to earn 1.5 points, and finish with 15 points.

No Fans Turn Up To Welcome Shubman Gill-Led Team India In England: Report

Shubman Gill-led Indian team arrived in London on Saturday ahead of the all-important five-match Test series against England starting on June 20. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) posted a video of team arriving in London on its social media accounts. "Touchdown UK. Team India have arrived for the five-match Test series against England," the BCCI captioned the post. Jasprit Bumrah, Gill, Arshdeep Singh, Rishabh Pant and Prasidh Krishna were in all smiles during the travel. The squad looked charged-up and upbeat for the long tour on English conditions. According to a video on journalist Vimal Kumar 's YouTube channel, there were no fans or media personnel to welcome the team near the airport. Before departing the country, newly-appointed Test captain Gill reflected on the challenges of playing without stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli following their retirements from the format last month. "I think there is pressure every time you play and match or start a tour. As such, there is pressure ahead of every series, but there would not be any extra pressure. Rohit and Virat are very experienced players, and it is very difficult to fill the space, but as a team, we have a lot of experience, and we have played a lot of matches," said Gill at the pre-departure press conference in Mumbai on Thursday. "The players and the team are all used to the pressure. We are not that inexperienced players. The batting and bowling combination in our team is very good," said the India Test captain. Gill also talked about his first reaction when he got the news that he would be India's new Test captain and said they have not decided what position he will bat in. He has opened in the previous tours and has also batted at No.3. But with Rohit not there, the team management has to also take a call on who will partner Gill if he decides to open, Yashasvi Jaiswal or Abhimanyu Easwaran, the Bengal opener who is yet to debut. "Firstly, when I came to know that I would get an opportunity like this, at the beginning, it was very overwhelming. It was quite overwhelming with the whole experience. But having said that, I think it is a big responsibility. And looking forward, there is a great chance that we will be presented first. And we haven't really decided on the (batting) position yet. We still have some time. We have a spot match in London. So, we still have time to decide on the batting order," said Gill. India are aiming to win a Test series in England for the first time since 2007. The Test series in England will also be India's first assignment in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle.

Kamboj gets McKinney after India A put on board 348

Kamboj got India A the breakthrough with a brilliant outswinger that had Ben McKinney (12) caught behind by wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel for 12, shortly after the left-handed opener was dropped at point in the eighth over. Tom Haines (28 batting) and Emilio Gay (3 batting) were at the crease as the Lions were trailing by 290 runs in their first innings. Northampton, Jun 7 (PTI) Anshul Kamboj provided the breakthrough to leave England Lions at 58 for one at lunch after India A folded for 348 on day two of the second unofficial Test, here Saturday. Otherwise, run flowed easily for the Lions even as India A bowlers continued to probe their defence and discipline continuously. Gay was, in particular, troubled by the India A bowlers even though the conditions remained conducive for batting compared to the first day when it was overcast and the pitch sported fresh grass. Earlier, resuming at 319 for seven, Indian batters could not trouble the scorers much as the remainder of the batting folded for the first-innings total of 348. Overnight batters Tanush Kotian fell for 15 off 37 balls with two fours while Kamboj was dismissed for a mere two. There was success at last for Joshua Tongue who not only accounted for the overnight batters — cleaning up Kotian and dismissing Kamboj leg-before — but he also played a key role in the run-out dismissal of Tushar Deshpande (11). Khaleel Ahmed remained unbeaten on seven. Brief scores: India A: 348 all out in 89.3 overs (KL Rahul 116, Karun Nair 40, Dhruv Jurel 52, Nitish Kumar Reddy 34; Chris Woakes 3/60, George Hill 2/56) England Lions: 58 for 1 in 16 overs (Tom Haines batting 28; Anshul Kamboj 1/13).
