
In The Spirit Of Natural Justice
Having recently resigned from my executive positions within the National Party, I write this as someone who has seen the inner workings of the organisation up close. I joined the Party in 2023, during the election year that saw strong leadership return National to power.
To be transparent, I had never voted Blue before. For many years, I strongly opposed the policies of the National Party for a range of reasons—but this felt different. Under the leadership of Judith Collins, National introduced candidates in the Māori electorates. As a Māori person, this was a promising development. The inclusion of the Treaty of Waitangi within the Party's values signalled a direction I felt I could support. After a conversation over a glass of wine with a then list MP, I was on board.
A month later, I had the privilege of attending the launch of the Māori electorates for National at Parliament. I witnessed more than 20 years of history in the making, and I've stood present for the official launches of both Te Tai Hauāuru and Tāmaki Makaurau inside the House.
However, following a recent internal disagreement with some of the Māori members of the Party, I resigned from my executive positions—and ultimately, from the Party itself. It is off this backdrop that I now write.
Recently, Te Pāti Māori members were summoned to the Privileges Committee. Exercising their democratic rights, they declined to appear. Contrary to the rhetoric from ACT, attendance is not compulsory. Members of Parliament are not obligated to appear. That crucial point has been lost in much of the commentary.
The report was presented before the House for debate. I listened carefully as Minister Collins, Chair of the Committee, spoke. Initially, her delivery was measured—clear, coherent, and seemingly factual—until it wasn't.
The Committee, by majority (not consensus, which diverges from the usual practice), accused Te Pāti Māori co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer of using 'gun gestures,' pointing toward ACT Party members, and saying 'e noho' following a haka performed in the House. I do not dispute that the performance disrupted proceedings. It did interrupt the business of the House and halted both sides of the vote—blocking parties on both the left and right from recording their stances.
But in the spirit of democracy and natural justice, a report of this magnitude should be entirely factual. It should not rely on circumstantial or interpreted evidence. Let's be clear—the haka did happen. This isn't about 'haka.' It is about process. Whether you agree with the actions taken or not, due process matters.
In my view, the report contains errors. Some of the accusations are false; others are framed through subjective interpretation. Two claims in particular stand out:
In my view, the report is incorrect, accusations in the report are either false or interpretations and noted by subjective language. The accusations that are either interpreted to suit a narrative or false are:
'Ms Ngarewa-Packer … simulating a firing motion, said 'e noho' (sit down) Audio/visual evidence of the word clearly spoken was ' kino,' not 'e noho,' and the gesture was described as a 'wiri' (a trembling expression) or even a point, not a gun simulation. This indicates a potential factual inaccuracy in transcription and cultural interpretation. There is no evidence that points directly to intent of a gun motion. The word 'kino' has multiple translations and the committee relied on interpretation of their own, or did not seek assurances without consulting Māori experts to validate meaning or intent. Therefore, with this understanding, this section of the report is false.
'Particularly unacceptable for Ms Ngarewa-Packer to appear to simulate firing a gun…' This is a subjective interpretation of a cultural gesture. No independent verification was cited, nor was expert Māori input accepted. Te Pāti Māori refuted this interpretation and stated it was not a firearm simulation but an expressive haka gesture. There is no one way of simulating a firearm – after asking 10 kids, 2 in 10 showed the same as Ngarewa-Packer. With an understanding of the word 'kino' it is more likely that Te Pāti Māori MP pointed towards the Act Party calling them 'kino' and unlikely to be a 'fire arm simulation'.
It is under this report that the committee has proposed a level of sanction that this country has never seen. Let's be clear, the report is not accurate. You can clearly argue both sides of this – however, in the evidence of fact, can parliament really accept the recommendations with false evidence.
With the facts of the report being called into question, one, in the spirit of democracy, must ask the question, is the report valid to affirm the recommendations and sanction 3 of Te Pāti Māori MPs to the high level this country has ever seen? In the presence of 'doubt' and natural justice, can such a harsh sentence be handed down? Can the current government of New Zealand, stand on moral ground in the future and hold another government to account on the validity of their decisions if they choose to impose the recommendations of this report? Or, does the government have the political courage to stand up, say the report is flawed, and accept that the stand down period has occurred and the house and can get back to business for the people of this beautiful country?

Supermarkets Slammed For Bad Behaviour
Another day, another report that reveals how badly the duopoly supermarkets of Woolworths and Foodstuffs are treating their customers and suppliers to benefit themselves. 'Kiwi consumers deserve so much better than this. We are still paying some of the highest prices on the planet to put food on the table and we have known this for more than three years,' said Grocery Action Group chair Sue Chetwin. Today's report from the Commerce Commission slams the supermarket duopoly sector for the way it treats its suppliers by making unrealistic demands of them and asking them to wear costs the supermarkets should be covering. The Commission also says this is a significant issue for any potential competitors who face an insurmountable battle to get wholesale groceries at a reasonable price. 'The report reveals the supermarkets suppliers are being subsidised by around $5 billion in rebates, discounts and promotional payments. Competitors just cannot compete with that power inbalance. 'It doesn't work for consumers either because prices bounce around so much they no longer know what a fair price might be,' Chetwin said. 'The report shows once again that despite the Commission and the Government calling out this appalling behavour the incumbents continue to treat consumers and suppliers as if they own them,' Chetwin said. 'In many respects they do. Foodstuffs and Woolworths hold more than 80% of the market. This lack of competition means consumers have no to little choice about where they shop.' Grocery Action also notes the large suppliers are complicit in this play because the lack of competition also helps keep their prices high. GAG is concerned improvements to the supply and wholesale codes proposed by the Commission, including prohibiting retaliation against suppliers who assert their rights will not be enough. 'The Commission is asking the duopoly to 'voluntarily' change the wholesale code over the next 12 months – that's like politely asking the greedy to stop being greedy. It won't work. 'We have already seen the duopoly play by its own rules. The industry has been on notice since the Commission released its Supermarket Study in 2022, which said supermarkets were making excessive profits and that a lack of competition meant we were paying some of the highest prices in the world for food, but nothing has changed. 'Hopefully this latest report will assist the Grocery Minister Nicola Willis, to conclude that forced divestment of the supermarkets to allow more competition needs to happen now, not in some distant future. Waikato University pressing on with med school plan
The University of Waikato is pressing ahead with its third medical school proposal, despite all indications it is now on life support. The Otago Daily Times has obtained a document advertising the position of an "independent commissioning agent" for the project. Interested parties have until the end of the month to submit applications, and a decision is due to made before July 4. "It is important to note that this procurement exercise is being conducted in parallel to the approval of the detailed business case being considered by government for a proposed medical school," the document said. "As such, there is no commitment that this contract will be awarded should the business case not be approved." A firm preference is placed on those with previous experience within the sector. "We are seeking respondents that have demonstrable experience in successfully delivering independent commissioning agent services on projects with a similar nature to ensure a seamless set-up and handover of the building to the university." The role would last about two and a-half years, depending on how long the first stage took to complete. It does not mention a salary band. There was also a outlay plan for stage 1 of the "division of health" precinct, which would provide teaching and learning facilities for the proposed new medical school and support the division's existing programmes in nursing, midwifery and pharmacy. "The division is in a strong growth phase and has more than 1000 equivalent fulltime students in these existing programmes," a Waikato University spokeswoman said. Green MP Francisco Hernandez said there was a level of desperation to these documents. "Aotearoa desperately needs more doctors and medical professionals, but unfortunately this government is just tinkering around the issue while at its core the problem gets worse. "The Health Minister should do the right thing and kill off this zombie project once and for all rather than keeping it in limbo. "Setting up a new medical school at a university with no track record of delivering medical graduates and which will require substantial levels of capital investment is a bad use of time and resources." The Waikato Medical School proposal has proved controversial — the existing medical schools at Otago and Auckland Universities argue they can deliver more medical school students more cheaply and efficiently. National campaigned on the third medical school at the 2023 election, but Act New Zealand made it part of its coalition agreement it would not like the project to go ahead without a detailed cost-benefit analysis. When asked about progress on the project, and when the government would likely announce an outcome, Health Minister Simeon Brown reiterated the proposal remained under "active consideration". This is despite the fact no extra money exists in the Budget for the project for this year. Documentation from Treasury, the Tertiary Education Commission and Ministry of Education have all expressed concern about the cost of the project, the logistical hurdles in establishing it and the speed at which the government hoped to complete it. An Otago University spokeswoman said ministers had been clear both before and after the Budget no final decisions had been taken on the proposal for a third medical school. "Already this year we have taken 10 more domestic students, and we will take another 10 students next year. "Otago is able to immediately increase our medical intake from 323 to 348 students, raising it to 450 from 2027. "This increase in students would not require any new capital funding as we would largely reconfigure use of existing facilities and resources."
