Thrifting was made for times like these.
A prolonged period of high living costs and consumer pushback against the excesses of fast fashion has led to soaring interest in buying secondhand clothes and pre-owned homewares.
Big business is tapping into the trend, drawing mixed reactions from thrifters accustomed to spending their money at charitable op shops.
Late last year, the private equity-backed Savers, a firm listed in the US, opened a store on Oxford Street, one of Sydney's primary shopping precincts. Months earlier, it had unveiled a sprawling superstore in the city's west.
In the next few months, it plans to open stores in Sydney's inner west on the bustling Parramatta Road, and in the city's outskirts in Marsden Park.
The Sydney expansion builds on the outlet's long-term presence in Melbourne and Adelaide.
Savers, the biggest for-profit thrift retailer in North America, has found financial favour in Australia, with quarterly sales jumping to US$30.7m in the March quarter, up almost 12% from a year earlier.

Overall, the company generated US$1.54bn in sales in 2024 through its network of more than 350 stores, mainly located in the US and Canada.
Caitie Pridmore, a longtime op shopping enthusiast, says she is more inclined to shop at charity-run op shops than Savers, but any arguments against for-profit thrift stores should be nuanced.
'It comes down to … the intention as the consumer, and then the intention as the retailer of the op shop,' she says.
'With Savers, it's an interesting one. I feel less compelled to shop there.'
Pridmore says while there is a charitable element to the way Savers operates, she prefers to spend her money in op shops where she knows her contributions are going to have 'more of an impact on the community'.
For-profit thrift retailers tend to do well in markets where customers are conscious about their spending, but not under so much financial pressure that they stop buying altogether.
This is representative of conditions in Australia, where households are grappling with cost-of-living pressures, but most people have a job, with unemployment at a low level of 4.1%.
Michael Fisher, the managing director at Savers Australia, said in a statement that secondhand shopping served as a meaningful and sustainable way for consumers to stretch their dollars in the current economic climate.
'We are competitively positioned in the retail sector with a hyperlocal model, an average price per item of less than $10, and a fresh assortment that provides exceptional value to consumers,' Fisher said.
The Savers model relies on donations of clothes and small household items to its charitable partners, including Red Nose, Wounds Australia and Diabetes Victoria, which are either collected by the not-for-profits or through donation centres attached to the stores.
Savers then pays the charities for those goods.
The Wounds Australia chief executive, Jeff Antcliff, said the organisation had been 'thrilled with the exposure' the partnership had brought and that the relationship provided revenue to support the organisation's work in advocating for those living with chronic wounds.
Savers' charitable partners, including Wounds Australia, said the rates paid by Savers were confidential.
In the US, Savers has faced questions over the transparency of its relationships with nonprofit partners, and the rates it pays.

The office of the Washington attorney general said in 2017 that Savers' parent company was paying one of its charitable partners as little as four pennies for every pound of clothing. Other goods, like housewares, earned the charities 2 US cents per pound.
Savers did not respond to questions about the per-kilo rate it pays in Australia.
Fisher said the company had paid its Australian not-for-profit partners about $20m for secondhand goods over the last five years.
'Last year alone, we found a reuse for over 9.1 million kilograms of secondhand items,' Fisher said in a statement.
One of Savers' partners, Diabetes Victoria, disclosed in financial accounts that about 4.8m kgs of clothes and other products went to Savers in 2024, and that the charity had earned $2.98m from its collections business.
While this would imply a rate of about 62c per kilo, the calculation could be complicated by donations of different types of goods attracting different rates.
The Diabetes Victoria chief executive, Glen Noonan, said the Savers partnership had 'played a vital role in advancing our efforts to raise funds for much needed diabetes programs, advocacy and world-leading diabetes research'.
The thrifting sector has changed significantly from the days of being almost exclusively run by charities.
Another for-profit model, consignment stores, allows people to sell unwanted clothes for lower-than-retail prices if they don't want to give them away for free.
Bec Brewin, a keen op-shopper who creates thrifting content for social media, says e-commerce platforms like Depop facilitate a more sustainable economy, even though 'you're not donating to a charity, you're donating to somebody's wallet'.
'As long as you're aware of the fact that you're shopping at a for-profit thrift shop or op shop, it's fine. You're still making a more sustainable choice,' she says.
Vicky Weatherlake, who runs an online thrifting community I Love To Op Shop which includes a Facebook group with more than 122,000 members, says she supports the Savers business model.
'I'm not wasting time criticising Savers for not being not-for-profit when we have [fast fashion platforms] doing huge environmental damage,' she says, referring to mass market retailers selling ultra cheap clothing.
'Is [Savers] competitive with op shops? Yes, certainly – but from my personal point of view, it's more environmentally friendly.'
'We've got far bigger fish to fry than pulling Savers up on being a for-profit business, when it actually gets through so much goods that people are just not wanting any more,' she says.

Australian universities are urging the Albanese government to join New Zealand in a $170bn Europe research fund amid US president Donald Trump's sweeping crackdown on higher education and international students. Universities Australia's executive officer, Luke Sheehy, travelled to Brussels this week to meet representatives from the European Commission and the Australian ambassador, Angus Campbell, to discuss the possibility of joining Horizon Europe. The seven-year scientific collaborative research fund, with a budget of €95.5bn ($168bn), has 20 non-European partners – including New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Canada – but the Australian government has so far been reluctant to join. Industry insiders have attributed the government's reluctance to potential costs. New Zealand will pay €19m ($33m) over five years to be part of the program. The EU is drawing up strategies for the next seven-year funding cycle, due to begin in 2028, with a proposal expected to be announced mid-year. About €36bn ($63bn) is still available to the end of 2027. In comparison, Australia's total annual spend on research across all sectors is less than $40bn. 'Growing geopolitical uncertainties are threatening to reshape our existing research alliances and we must adapt to remain ahead of the game,' he said. 'If we're serious about building a prosperous and productive economy, we need a seat at the table, particularly in a changing and more complex global environment.' The trade minister, Don Farrell, is in Paris this week restarting negotiations on a trade deal with the EU. Sheehy 'strongly encourage[d]' him to make Australia's involvement in Horizon Europe a focus of conversations. 'There is a strong appetite in Europe to have Australia come on board,' Sheehy said. 'This would remove the biggest roadblock for Australian researchers and scientists working with their European and other counterparts around the world. It's mutually beneficial. 'For what is a relatively modest investment, our best and brightest would gain access to billions of dollars in potential funding to take their work to the next level.' The higher eduction sector has closely focussed on Horizon Europe since the Trump administration was accused of possible 'foreign interference' in Australia's universities in March, pausing funding for programs at more than six universities. Researchers who receive US funding were sent a questionnaire asking them to confirm they aligned with US government interests and promoted administration priorities – including avoiding 'DEI, woke gender ideology and the green new deal'. Australia's Group of Eight CEO, Vicki Thomson, wrote to then-industry minister, Ed Husic, earlier this year on behalf of its member universities and the European Australian Business Council (EABC) CEO, Jason Collins, urging Australia to associate with the research fund. It has prepared a brief for the ambassador to the US, Kevin Rudd, at his request. Thomson, also the EABC deputy chair, has lobbied the government to join Horizon Europe for more than a decade. She will be meeting with stakeholders for negotiations in the next fortnight as part of an EABC delegation to Europe. Thomson said association with Horizon Europe was 'critical' to boosting productivity and providing essential buffers against negative global trends. 'Like trade, changes to the global research funding environment are also sending shocks around the world,' she said. 'The US is withdrawing from international research collaboration through the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and other agencies as well as defunding research in diversity, equity and inclusion. 'In the face of this, it is imperative that Australia maintains and extends international research collaboration through formal association with Horizon Europe.' The Australian Academy of Science president, Prof Chennupati Jagadish AC, also wants Australia to join the lucrative research fund, pointing to a possible research vacuum in the face of an increasingly unstable US. In April, the body announced a new global talent attraction program to capitalise on academics disfranchised by the Trump administration's research cuts. Americans represent 40% of collaborators in Australian physical sciences publications – including observational systems relied on for cyclone tracking capability and onshore mRNA vaccine manufacturing. Jagadish said the government must 'immediately act to diversify risk' by expanding international research collaborations, focusing on Horizon Europe. The industry minister, Madeleine King, was approached for comment.

Australians thinking of moving to a regional area are being cautioned to check first whether their affordable dream property could turn out to be uninsurable. Young workers priced out of buying in Australia's increasingly unaffordable capital cities are looking to regional areas to secure a house, especially if they can work from home. But buying regional real estate presents some issues much less likely in a big city, such as the risk of floods or bushfires. Last month, 16 local government areas in the NSW Hunter and on the state's Mid-North Coast were declared natural disaster areas after floods triggered 6,000 insurance claims - 80 per cent of which were for damaged homes. The Climate Council has warned that up to half of the homes in these areas are at a high to moderate risk of being affected by a natural disaster. This will lead to insurance premiums rising to levels where they are unaffordable for the average-income earner, with premiums of $30,000 no longer considered unusual in areas located near rivers. Of Australia's 10 zones most prone to a natural disaster, seven are in regional areas. In NSW, five regional areas north of Sydney are in the high-risk category, along with northern Victoria, southern Queensland and areas around Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Economist Nicki Hutley, a consultant with the Climate Council, said the risk warranted a serious revision of any plans to move to those areas, regardless of how cheap the land may appear to be. 'They need to reconsider moving to some higher-risk regional areas,' Ms Hutley told Daily Mail Australia. 'This is a really hard message to sell but we want people to really understand what is the risk. 'The answer may not be "don't move there", the answer may be that community infrastructure reduces the risks significantly.' Maitland, in the NSW Hunter Valley, is Australia's fifth most popular local government area for internal migration, based on Commonwealth Bank customer data provided to the Regional Australia Institute. The Mid-Coast council area, covering flood-ravaged Taree, was 13th on the list for relocators, and was recently soaked with 500mm of rain in just four days. Both of these council areas, with population centres along a major river, fall within the federal electorate of Lyne. Climate Council mapping showed a whopping 45.7 per cent of homes in this electorate were at a moderate to high risk of natural disasters. They are also near the Labor-held Hunter electorate where 50.3 per cent of properties are at risk, with 12.9 per cent at high risk. Port Macquarie, which also suffered from recent flooding, is eighth on the list of popular regional locations for those moving from another part of Australia. This part of the NSW mid-north coast falls within the Nationals-held seat of Cowper, where a majority or 57.2 per cent of homes are at risk of a climate hazard. The Tweed council area, on the NSW far north coast, was 15th on the list of relocation hotspots, and falls within the Labor-held seat of Richmond where 47 per cent of properties are at risk, including 28.9 per cent at high risk. On the NSW South Coast, the Shoalhaven area was the seventh most popular spot for movers, and fell within the Labor-held seat of Gilmore where 36.9 per cent of properties are at risk. The Climate Council also listed 10 federal electorates where average, insurance costs are more likely to be unaffordable, because damage from natural disasters was likely to cost one per cent of a home's value in repairs. 'Uninsurable is saying that the premiums are at such a level that a person on average income could not possibly afford them and/or insurance companies have pulled that product from the market,' Ms Hutley said. 'Sometimes there are areas where house and contents insurance is available but not for specific kinds of risks like flood or fire because the area is considered too risky for the insurance company.' 'Clearly, people move there because property is cheaper and it's not just because of climate risk,' she said. 'As the events recur, that is likely to have further impact on property prices.' Lismore, on the NSW far north coast, is particularly affordable after a series of devastating floods, having a median house price of just $472,923, based on CoreLogic data. This is less than half the national house price of $898,604. 'People expect they were snapping up a bargain, that they would take on the insurance risk themselves,' Ms Hutley said. The city is also in the federal Nationals seat of Page, where 51.8 per cent of properties are at risk, with 16.9 per cent deemed high risk. This makes regional living a particularly fraught decision for many people unless they were able to spend tens of thousands of dollars on raising the level of their house. 'You don't want to be buying a house in an area where you know there are designated risks of flooding and you're one block back from the river that's got no levees or flood protection unless you're able to do something with the property,' she said. 'That's obviously very expensive and not everybody can do that type of thing. 'Clearly, climate change is exacerbating - what we're now calling "unnatural disasters" and particularly flood risk is getting worse so there are areas where people are still moving to which, if not today, then certainly within the next couple of decades; they're facing significantly elevated risk.'
