PSG sizzles in the California sun, sends message with dominant win
LOS ANGELES :Paris St Germain picked up right where they left off in their first match since winning the Champions League last month, turning what was billed as a blockbuster into a 4-0 rout of Atletico Madrid in their Club World Cup opener.
The sunsoaked midday match, timed to accommodate fans watching in Europe, drew 80,619 people to the sunsoaked Rose Bowl in Pasadena on a day when the toasty conditions led to water breaks in both halves.
"It's the best scheduled time for the European countries, but it's difficult to play in these conditions," PSG coach Luis Enrique said after the Group B clash.
Enrique was encouraged to see the massive turnout, which set an attendance record for PSG and Atletico Madrid this season, according to FIFA.
"It's really great to feel that love in another part of the world," Enrique said.
"We are happy and we want to continue in that way."
No team has been able to push PSG off course lately.
They have outscored their opponents 12-0 over their past three matches including their 5-0 romp over Inter Milan in the Champions League final.
Beating fellow European powerhouse Atletico Madrid in such convincing fashion on Sunday solidifies PSG's status as one of the favourites to triumph in the 32-team Club World Cup.
Despite being without injured Ballon d'Or favourite Ousmane Dembele, the young team earned the win behind a balanced attack and saw goals from four different players - Fabian Ruiz, Vitinha, Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-in.
"Every single player has been developing and showing to the team their best quality," Enrique said.
"As a coach I'm very happy."
Vitinha, who took Man of the Match honours, said it is always a group effort.
"As always I am going to talk about the team," he said.
"It was a very good game and it's difficult with this temperature, but we did well against a very good team. Everybody knows Atletico is a tough team, an aggressive team, but we did very well.
"We managed to control all of the game.
"We could have scored more, but we are happy with the result."

Four people have been handed suspended jail sentences by a Madrid Court after being found guilty of a hate crime related to an effigy of Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr, Spain's LaLiga said in a statement on Monday. The other three were sentenced to seven months in prison for hate crimes and seven months for threats. They will not serve prison time, however, after all four signed a letter of apology to Vinicius, Real Madrid, LaLiga and the Spanish soccer federation (RFEF). "The defendant who posted the video online received a special disqualification from working in education, sports, or recreational youth settings for four years and three months, while the others received three years and seven months," the LaLiga statement said. The first defendant was fined 1,084 euros ($1,250) and the other three 720 euros, with additional punishments including a 1,000-meter restraining order from Vinicius, his home and workplace, and a ban on approaching soccer stadiums during LaLiga or RFEF matches. They will all be required to participate in an educational programme on equal treatment and non-discrimination in order for the prison sentences imposed to be suspended. There was no immediate confirmation from the court and no immediate reaction from Vinicius. ($1 = 0.8638 euros)

How Lewis Hamilton and Apple brought F1 racing to the movie screen
CUPERTINO, California :Racing legend Lewis Hamilton, a producer on an upcoming movie starring Brad Pitt as a fictional Formula 1 driver, wanted the film to show the reality of what it looks, feels and sounds like to speed around a track at 200 miles per hour. To avoid having Apple's "F1 The Movie" seem "faked" by Hollywood, Hamilton provided input on details such as when drivers should brake or shift gears. The film will be released in theaters by Warner Bros on June 27. "I really wanted to make sure the authenticity was there, and it worked for both the younger and the older audience, and then making sure that the racing was true to what it is," Hamilton said in an interview with Reuters Television. "All the other drivers, all the teams, are relying on me to make sure that it does," the seven-time world champion added. In the movie, Pitt plays a driver who comes out of retirement to mentor a young hotshot portrayed by Damson Idris. Co-stars include Javier Bardem and Kerry Condon. Portions of the film were shot during real-life F1 events in Abu Dhabi, Mexico City and other Grand Prix stops. The filmmakers would shoot on the tracks during short breaks in the races. Pitt and Idris drove themselves in professional race cars at high speeds. Before filming started, Hamilton said he met with Pitt at a racetrack in Los Angeles so he could size up the actor's driving skills. "I really wanted to see, can you actually drive?" Hamilton said. A longtime motorcycle rider and racing fan, Pitt showed a baseline ability at that point that made Hamilton comfortable. "He already had the knack," Hamilton said, which the actor further developed through weeks of intense training. "He really went in deep," Hamilton said. "F1" was directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the team that put together the thrilling fighter-jet scenes in 2022 blockbuster film "Top Gun: Maverick." For "F1," they needed new cameras that would work in race cars, which can be slowed down by extra weight. Producing partner Apple, which began releasing movies in 2019, was able to help. The company used some of its iPhone technology to adapt a camera system typically used in real F1 cars during TV broadcasts. The hardware looked like a traditional F1 camera but delivered the high-resolution video that the filmmakers wanted for the big screen. "This movie was just a great example of putting the whole of the company behind a movie," Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said. "We designed the camera that went into the car to capture the incredible driving experience. It makes you feel like you're actually sitting in the car and experiencing what Brad is experiencing." Cook said he felt the movie showcased the athleticism required to rise to the elite ranks of F1 driving. Hamilton said he had encouraged more examples of the sport's physical challenges. Drivers can lose five or 10 pounds, he said, from the exertion during a race.

Pochettino glad to get a reaction after US end losing streak in style
United States manager Mauricio Pochettino said Sunday's 5-0 thrashing of Trinidad and Tobago in their Gold Cup opener would do his squad the world of good after they came in for some stinging criticism during a four-match losing run. The U.S., who will co-host next year's World Cup with Canada and Mexico, had come under pressure after a humiliating 4-0 defeat by Switzerland in a friendly last week but found form in California to go top of Group D. The U.S. were without some of their top players, including Christian Pulisic, Antonee Robinson, Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah, who have decided to skip the tournament, with the high-profile absences prompting criticism from former U.S. stalwarts Landon Donovan and Alexi Lalas. Pochettino said it was important to start the Gold Cup with a "good feeling". "Today's game was also a difficult one, especially because of the negative things that happened in recent weeks," he was quoted as saying by ESPN. "Some results that haven't gone well always generate a bit of noise. It's important for the players to have that confidence." With the World Cup on the horizon, former Tottenham Hotspur boss Pochettino said the Gold Cup would be a chance for players to stake their claim for a place in the squad next year.
