Buccaneers' Mike Evans Among NFL's Best at One Specific Route
Buccaneers' Mike Evans Among NFL's Best at One Specific Route originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Mike Evans is fresh off his 11th consecutive 1,000-yard season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, tying Hall of Famer Jerry Rice's record, and is the only player to ever do it in the first 11 seasons of his career. Advertisement The former Texas A&M Aggies pass catcher strikes fear in the eyes of defenders each and every week thanks to his excellent route-running skills and pass-catching ability. But according to Lauren Gray of Pro Football Focus, Evans was best in the league last season at running the slant route. "Mike Evans generated a 15.8% target rate on slants last season, the second-highest clip in his route tree. Nearly every catch turned into a big play. He secured 16 of 18 passes for 187 yards (fourth most), with all but two catches going for first downs. Seven of his first downs came on late-down targets, where he secured each one for 92 yards. Evans hauled in two touchdown passes, recorded five gains of 15-plus yards and ranked fifth in yards gained after contact (45). "The 11th-year veteran has seen 54 slant targets over the past three seasons (fifth most), earning a 94.3 PFF receiving grade on those plays (tied for third best). He has caught 45 slants for 487 yards and 36 first downs across that span, all top-three figures." Advertisement Last season, offensive coordinator Liam Coen had a lot to do with spreading out the offense, and Evans benefited. Next year, Josh Grizzard will be calling plays and designing the offense, but isn't expected to deviate too much from what Coen started last year before he took the head coaching job in Jacksonville. Steelers Offensive Lineman Announces Position Change
Steelers Offensive Lineman Announces Position Change originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers lost starting left tackle Dan Moore Jr. to the Tennessee Titans in free agency. Now there will be a bit of shuffling along the offensive line to make up for it. Advertisement Last year's starting right tackle, Broderick Jones, has announced that the team is moving him to the other side to replace Moore. 'I think it went as good as it could go,' Jones said, via Steelers Now. 'You know, with everything going on — with me moving back to [LT] from [RT]. I still got a couple more weeks to hone in on my skills and continue to develop on the left side — and come in ready for [training camp]. 'If I'm being honest, I think I probably do need a couple more weeks. Not saying I'd be bad, but just for me. Just to feel like I'm in the mindset to play an actual game — versus somebody else other than going against Alex Highsmith or Nick [Herbig].' Jones is a former No. 14 overall pick by the Steelers in the 2023 NFL Draft. Advertisement The former Georgia Bulldog became the starting right tackle in Week 9 of that same season. Pro Football Focus says Jones allowed 30 pressures and five sacks that season. Last year, PFF noted Joness gave up 45 pressures and 11 sacks after taking over for Troy Fautanu after a season-ending knee injury. Jones admitted that he's had to make an adjustment in his head now that he's changing sides. 'It's just flipping the plays in my head. Because some of our plays, they're flip-flopped backwards,' Jones said, via PennLive's Nick Farabaugh. 'So you hear them and they might be going one way, but it may be called the other way. So just staying locked in with the plays and just making sure you know them. And you know the plays, you can play at 110%.' Ravens Cornerback Labeled Prime Breakout Candidate
Ravens Cornerback Labeled Prime Breakout Candidate originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Baltimore Ravens selected Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins with the 30th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and he had a very solid rookie season. Advertisement But some think he could improve even more and be a force to be reckoned with in his second season. In a recent article by PFF's Bradley Locker, he puts together a team full of player who he thinks could step up in a big way in 2025. And one of the players he mentions is the young Ravens defensive back. "From Week 7 onward, Wiggins earned a 69.4-plus PFF coverage grade in six of 12 contests. Throughout the broader season, the former Clemson Tiger ranked in the 70th percentile in both PFF coverage grade at outside cornerback (70.9) and in forced incompletion rate (12.7%)," Locker wrote. "With Brandon Stephens now a Jet, Wiggins should net a full year of starting outside next to Marlon Humphrey and Kyle Hamilton. Given how promising the early results were for Wiggins, his potential is high, even as early as this season." The 21-year-old cornerback came in and was able to learn alongside guys like Humphrey and Hamilton, and it showed in his play. Advertisement Wiggins finished his rookie season with 33 total tackles and 25 solo in just six games started. He was also able to show his ball-hawk skills with an interception and 13 passes defended. The Ravens are coming off of a loss in the playoffs to the Buffalo Bills, so Wiggins and the rest of the defense will be looking to help the team redeem themselves.
