Chief of Titan's watches division Suparna Mitra steps down

Time of India13-05-2025

Mumbai: Suparna Mitra, the long-serving chief of Titan Company's Watches & Wearables Division, is stepping down. In a stock exchange filing on May 13, the Tata Group firm said Mitra had submitted her resignation, citing personal reasons.
She will leave the company on August 12. A successor has not yet been named.
Mitra's departure marks the end of a long association with the maker of India's best-known watch brands. She first joined Titan in 1994 and, after a stint at Hindustan Unilever, returned in 2006. In her most recent role—held since 2020—she oversaw the company's efforts to reposition its watch business, improve design and materials, and expand retail presence.
Under her leadership, Titan not only revived legacy brands like Raga but also introduced new ones such as Octane and Zoop.
The company's ambitious foray into premium watchmaking included the launch of India's first indigenously produced Flying Tourbillon watch in 2024.
Mitra holds an electrical engineering degree from Jadavpur University and an MBA from IIM Calcutta. Known for her customer-centric approach and attention to innovation, she is widely credited with steering the division through a phase of aggressive growth and international recognition—including Titan's nomination at the prestigious Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève.
Last year, she joined food delivery giant Swiggy as an independent director before its IPO. That appointment, and her departure now, suggest that more independent or board-level roles may lie ahead. Her exit comes at a time when India's consumer goods sector is undergoing rapid transformation, with discretionary spending shifting toward premium and digital-first products.

Qualcomm strengthens AI portfolio with $2.4 billion Alphawave deal

U.S. chipmaker Qualcomm on Monday agreed to acquire British semiconductor company Alphawave for about $2.4 billion as part of efforts to strengthen its artificial intelligence technology. Alphawave shareholders will receive 183 pence per share, a nearly 96% premium to the price immediately before Qualcomm disclosed its interest in the company. The shares jumped 22% in early London trade to just below the offer price. U.S.-based firms have been snapping up British assets, taking advantage of a market that is plagued by comparatively weaker valuations and stunted growth. Alphawave, which designs and licenses semiconductor technology for data centers, networking and storage, had garnered takeover interest from Qualcomm and SoftBank-owned chip tech provider Arm in early April for its 'serdes' technology. The technology underpins the speed at which data is processed by chips - crucial for AI development - and serves as the foundation for Broadcom's and Marvell Technology's multibillion-dollar bespoke chip businesses. Arm walked away after initial discussions with Alphawave, Reuters exclusively reported in April citing sources. Qualcomm also tabled two alternative all-share offers to Alphawave's shareholders, after receiving multiple extensions from the UK's takeover panel to table a firm offer. The British company said it considers the terms of the cash offer to be fair and reasonable and intends to unanimously recommend it to its shareholders. Alphawave also completed the disposal of its stake in WiseWave, its joint venture with Chinese investment firm Wise Road Capital, to existing state shareholders on Monday.

Google Gemini takes on AI assistant role with Scheduled Actions: Details

Google is expanding Gemini's capabilities with a new feature called Scheduled Actions, allowing users to automate AI-powered tasks at specific times or intervals. Rolled out for AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers, as well as select Workspace users, the update aims to make Gemini more proactive in handling everyday routines and requests. As of now, the feature will only be available to paying users. It's unclear whether free-tier users will get access in the future. According to Google's blog, with Scheduled Actions, users can ask Gemini to perform one-time or recurring tasks — like getting a daily summary of emails, receiving blog post ideas every Monday, or even getting weather-based outfit suggestions each morning. Users need to specify the task and when they would like it done, and Gemini will take care of the rest. For example, one may ask Gemini to summarise their calendar and unread emails every morning, generate five blog topics each Monday, or give a wrap-up of an event like an award show the day after it airs. These prompts can be triggered by time, date, or even specific events, offering a wide range of possibilities. Customise, track, and manage all in one place As per Google, users can schedule up to 10 active tasks at a time. All planned actions can be viewed, paused, or deleted from a new 'Scheduled actions' tab available under Settings in the Gemini app — accessible via mobile or desktop. If the task is location-based, Gemini will use the location where the action was originally created to deliver consistent results. Scheduled actions are delivered as push notifications on mobile, keeping users informed without the need to open the app each time. This feature builds on Google's broader ambition to make Gemini not just conversational, but truly helpful and agent-like. Notably, ChatGPT has also recently rolled out similar automated reminder capabilities for its subscribers.
