Bok berths up for grabs for Italy Tests

'It's definitely a different challenge to what we normally would have.
'The Barbarians have always knocked over a lot of great sides over the years, so for us around that challenge it's massive, so exactly what we want for our first game for the year.
'We're preparing our players like it is a Test match, and it won't be Barbarians versus Barbarians.
'It will be Springboks versus Barbarians, so everything we do will be around how we play the game, how we play Test match rugby, and how we're going to win the game.
'The first thing is we see it as a Test match, and we're going to play the game that way.'
Brown said the Boks would ensure their planning was in place to ensure a winning start to the season.
'We need to get our coaching right, we need to get our plans right, and we always win Test matches through putting the opposition under pressure, whether it's attack and defence,' he said.
'So that'll be our plan against the BaaBaas.
'Last year was a great experience for me with the Boks side.
'After two weeks of training in Johannesburg, I feel we are ahead of where we were last year, around how we want to play the game on defence and attack.
'The players understand what we expect of them, and I am excited to get it started.
'The upcoming games and results will show us where we are as a team.
'We track every player around their work rate and skill set and everything else around their performance.
'We know what every franchise player is doing, we even track Cheslin Kolbe in Japan and guys who play overseas.
'Every player is being tracked, and we are really aware of who is playing well and who is a little off the pace.
'We know who the young guys coming through are who can play Test match rugby. We are well aware of that. There are not many players we miss around the world.'
Bok coach Rassie Erasmus has named four uncapped players in his team for SA's opening match of the international season.
Asenathi Ntlabakanye (prop) and Vincent Tshituka (flanker) have both been selected in a relatively experienced starting line-up.
Marnus van der Merwe (hooker) and Neethling Fouche (prop) will also feature alongside a few Rugby World Cup-winners and seasoned campaigners on the replacements bench.
Another notable inclusion is Lood de Jager, who will partner with Jean Kleyn in the Bok scrum.
The experienced lock is back for his first Test since the Springboks' 2023 Rugby Championship clash against the All Blacks in New Zealand, his only Test in the past two seasons after suffering a string of injuries.

Springbok desire was always there, says excited Jean-Luc du Preez about Barbarians clash

The Springboks braved the heavy rain in Cape Town on Wednesday to train at the Stormers headquarters in Bellville. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Utility forward Jean-Luc du Preez last had a taste of Springbok rugby nearly two years ago against Los Pumas in Argentina. On Saturday, the 14-times-capped Du Preez will get a taste of rugby with the world champions again when he wears the No 8 jersey against the Barbarians in Cape Town in a new-look loose trio for the side. He last donned the Green-and-Gold in August 2023, but his ambition to play for the side again never faded. Now, he is ready to embrace the chance to battle against the invitational side at the Cape Town Stadium (5.10pm start). Springbok utility forward Jean-Luc du Preez is ready to embrace the opportunity of playing against the Barbarians in his first Bok match in almost two years. Next Stay Close ✕ 'That desire was always there,' Du Preez said on Wednesday. 'The Springboks were always at the back of my mind, and I will always tell myself if I play well for the club, something may come my way and to be getting this opportunity again, I am delighted. 'For me, coming in and out of this Bok set-up (over the last few seasons), this is a very important game. 'It's been tough the last couple of years, and I just want to try and use the opportunity as best as I can. I just want to do my job on Saturday.' Du Preez said they will have to front up against the likes of Sam Cane and Shannon Frizzell, two of the former All Blacks part of the Barbarians team, and the physicality they will bring. Then, there is also former Irishman Peter O'Mahony, who will be a menace at the breakdowns. He reckons they will have a point to prove, especially with the Boks being world champions. 'I think just playing against the Springboks, any player will be up for it. It should be a good match-up. 'They love moving the ball, so we will have to come up with a big defence effort and we must stay on our toes. The focus will be on what we do good, and doing that to the best of our ability.' After his absence from the squad, Du Preez highlighted the difference attack coach Tony Brown has made since joining the set-up. He, of course, missed the 2024 season due to his non-selection, but got to experience the influence of Brown for the first time this year. 'We've always been labelled as a very conservative team. We kick a lot and play a territory game. With Tony coming in, our attack has stepped up. We've scored some brilliant tries that I've watched. That is the biggest change for me. #Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus on his team selection and blending experienced guys with some single-digit capped and uncapped players for Saturday's Barbarians clash — Leighton Koopman (@Leighton_K) June 24, 2025

New Bok prop Ntlabakanye put through wringer on scrum coach Human's farm

Soon-to-be Springbok tighthead prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye has gone the extra mile in trying to keep up with the free-running Barbarians in Saturday's clash at Cape Town Stadium. Moreover, his gut-busting actions over the past few weeks will help him fit in with the Springboks. Ntlabakanye has toiled on the farm of Springbok scrum coach Daan Human and has trimmed down from about 160kg to 141kg before Saturday's clash. Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus said the burly Lions prop's time on Human's farm has had the desired results. 'He went a few times to Daan's farm and stayed there for a week and Daan worked with him — with the blessing of the Lions coach and CEO — after the Lions fell out of the URC,' he said. 'Whenever there was a break, he drove to Bloemfontein, went to the farm and he dropped 15kg to 18kg. So let's hope he can now perform at Test-match level — that will be great.' Kamp Daandraad!! — Johan Erasmus (@RassieRugby) June 24, 2025 Human also put fellow prop Jan-Hendrik Wessels through an unconventional training regimen. Erasmus took to social media to post pictures of Ntlabakanye and Wessels being put through the wringer on Human's farm in Verkeerde Vlei, just more than 80km south of Bloemfontein. The coach referred to the exercise as 'Kamp Daandraad' in reference to the Springboks' jaw-droopingly infamous pre-2003 Rugby World Cup boot camp. Getting Ntlabakanye fighting fit is in the Boks' interest. Long-time occupier of the No 3 jersey Frans Malherbe is out injured for the remainder of the year and the Boks need to deepen their reserves in that position. At 26 Ntlabakanye is an investment in the Bok future when one considers Malherbe, Vincent Koch and Neethling Fouche are 34, 35, and 32 respectively. Wilco Louw, who has been laying serious claim to the No 3 jersey, is 30. Erasmus's attempt to get Ntlabakanye up to Bok speed, though radical, has been proactive. Reaching the desired mobility to fit into the demands of the Bok game plan would have been a box Ntlabakanye was required to tick before getting the selection nod. Jan Hendrik taste Kamp Staal Daan — Johan Erasmus (@RassieRugby) June 25, 2025 Erasmus places a high premium on his players getting off the deck and engaging in battles around the park. Despite bending defences on the charge and stunting opposition attacks with his firm embrace for the Lions, the 160kg version of Ntlabakanye would not have fitted the Bok mould. 'When we started looking at Asenathi two years ago, we tracked his 'battle' stats and they are up there with almost anyone,' Erasmus said. 'We then got him in with the help of Rudolf [Straeuli] and the Lions, and we said we've got to get this right.' The Lions' failure to reach the URC knockout rounds presented Ntlabakanye with the opportunity to accept Human's offer to improve his skills and fitness. The Lions' loss this season may turn out to be the Boks' gain. This Saturday Ntlabakanye appears ready to slip into a new role. In a recent interview with this writer, Ntlabakanye said he could have been a good actor had rugby not been his career choice, even proclaiming a deep admiration for actor Denzel Washington. You could argue Ntlabakanye's 'Training Day' has ensured 'He got game'.

When will Barbarians name team to face Springboks?

Earlier this week, the Barbarians reported for duty in South Africa to begin preparing for this Saturday's clash against the Springboks. As many as 18 players with Test experience from across the world touched down in Cape Town, with the 23-man squad – which includes former Junior Springbok lock Ruben van Heerden of the Stormers – set to take on the Springboks for the first time on South African soil. The first five players confirmed for the fixture were the Irish centurion trio of Cian Healy (prop), Peter O'Mahony (flanker) and Conor Murray (scrumhalf), while former All Black captain Sam Cane and his Kiwi teammate Shannon Frizell (both loose forwards) were also locked in. Murray is no longer involved, but they have included five more capped All Blacks in Hoskins Sotutu (loose forward), Tawera Kerr-Barlow (scrumhalf), Peter Umaga-Jensen (utility back), Leicester Fainga'anuku (wing) and Mark Tele'a (wing). Furthermore, Joe Marchant (England), Melvyn Jaminet (France), Santiago Arata Perrone (Uruguay), David Ribbans (England), Camille Chat (France), Will Collier (England), Hassane Kolingar (France), and Paul Alo-Emile (Samoa) are all capped at Test level. The composition of the final matchday 23 will be named at 12:00 on Thursday. Undoubtedly, Van Heerden is one player who the Springboks will be keeping an eye on, with the towering lock having recorded a URC league-leading 98% tackle success rate from 171 attempts during the regular season. 'Look, [Van Heerden] tackles like a machine, that we know, so he'll be all over us. It will be interesting,' Rassie Erasmus told reporters on Tuesday. 'He's been at an alignment camp last year with us, so we probably have to do our lineout calls in a bit of a huddle before we get there. We obviously trust him not to tell them our calls. The other lock [David Ribbans] is also South African… 'That team, if they get allowed to play the way they want – their thing is to play without pressure and entertain. Now, that can really backfire against you; I coached there. 'But what an opportunity for Ruben, because he's been close to the squad but he's never really got a look-in. So, he would love to play his socks off and show us, which is fantastic.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
