Edmonton Oilers NHL Draft guide: Picks, best fits and analysis
The Edmonton Oilers have four picks in the 2025 NHL Draft: Nos. 83, 117, 191, 223. Here's what to expect.
The Oilers had just three draft picks — a third-rounder from St. Louis for not matching Dylan Holloway's offer sheet, plus their own selections in the sixth and seventh rounds — before trading Evander Kane to Vancouver on Wednesday.

For dumping Kane and the last year of his $5.125 million AAV contract, the Oilers received a fourth-round pick in return. That asset was originally shipped to the Canucks last August to acquire left winger Vasily Podkolzin.
Still, the Oilers are scheduled to make just four picks and none until No. 83. That's the cost of being perennial Stanley Cup contenders and reaching the final two years in a row. — Daniel Nugent-Bowman
Edmonton's farm system is very light, but it has some potential NHL forwards in Matt Savoie and Sam O'Reilly. The blue line is another story. Beau Akey has a chance to make it, but after him, there's not much else coming.
In recent mock drafts, Corey Pronman has projected the following picks:
83. Hayden Paupanekis, C
191. Ondrej Stebetak, G
223. Patrik Volas, D

Pierre LeBrun's Expected 'Sweet Spot' for Maple Leafs-John Tavares Agreement
Pierre LeBrun's Expected 'Sweet Spot' for Maple Leafs-John Tavares Agreement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Veteran forward John Tavares made it clear at season's end he wants to remain with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but one week from the opening of NHL free agency, no extension has been signed. Advertisement The veteran just completed the final season of the seven-year, $77 million contract he signed in 2018 and remains in daily discussions with Leafs general manager Brad Treliving and agent Pat Brisson. According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, while discussions are still ongoing on a daily basis, the sides have yet to reach an agreement on terms and compensation. 'I think both sides probably would have been surprised a month ago if you would have told them they still hadn't had an extension done one week away from July 1,' Pierre LeBrun said. 'But I will also say this: it's not like they've hit a wall in talks. The dialogue continues almost daily.' Tavares is reportedly not expected to chase the highest offer available on the open market. Advertisement Daily Faceoff projects Tavares to sign a three-year, $23.7 million contract this offseason with a cap hit of $7.9 million per season. Instead of getting there, it's believed that Tavares would be willing to take less than his true market value to stay in Toronto, where he lives year-round with his wife and children. Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares (91) has expressed interest in staying with the E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images 'I believe that if the Leafs put $20 million over four years in front of John Tavares, that he would sign it,' LeBrun said. 'Neither side is there quite yet, but I think that ends up being the sweet spot if this gets done here in the next seven days.' Comparable deals signed of late include Matt Duchene's four-year, $4.5 million AAV contract with the Dallas Stars and Brock Nelson's $7.5 million AAV deal over three years with the Colorado Avalanche. Advertisement LeBrun noted that Tavares, who outproduced Nelson last season, isn't seeking top dollar but still hopes for fair value before July 1, thus the delay in an agreement with Toronto one week from the start of free agency. Maple Leafs Linked to Pending Free Agent Forwards from Two Canadian Teams originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With uncertainty hanging over Toronto Maple Leafs winger Mitch Marner's future with the franchise, NHL insiders Greg Wyshynski and Kristen Shilton of ESPN proposed a solution to fill Marner's vacated role if he ends up leaving. Advertisement According to the two insiders, the Maple Leafs could be eyeing veteran free-agent forwards such as the Ottawa Senators' Claude Giroux and the Vancouver Canucks' Pius Suter. The Leafs enter the offseason with over $25.7 million in cap space and two major question marks in Marner and fellow unrestricted free agent John Tavares. "Sam Bennett appears determined to stay in Florida. Toews and Matt Duchene have signed elsewhere," the report reads. "Beyond Tavares, the Leafs are looking at Mikael Granlund, Pius Suter, or perhaps Claude Giroux." Giroux, 37 and a seven-time All-Star with 1,116 career points, is coming off a 50-point season and remains in contract talks with the Senators. Advertisement According to the Ottawa Citizen, there's mutual interest between player and team in a reunion this offseason. Shilton and Wyshynski also pointed to Suter as a fit for Toronto's third-line center role. The 29-year-old is coming off a career-high 46 points with Vancouver and is expected to earn a salary raise. View of a Toronto Maple Leafs has to make a decision about John Tavare and Mitch Kirouac-Imagn Images According to NHL insider Rick Dhaliwal, the Canucks might be open to bring the forward back to Vancouver next season.
