
Consumer authorities give Shein a month to address claims of fake discounts and pressure sales tactics
Potential breaches include showing price reductions that are not based on original prices and pressure tactics like using false deadlines to pressure buyers.
The CCPC, along with the European Commission and consumer authorities in Belgium, France and The Netherlands has has asked Shein to rectify some of its practices and to propose ways to address them.
A failure to comply may lead to penalties, including fines.
The CCPC here also said customer should easily be able to reach Shein with complaints or to seek customer support, including easy to find contact details and that the retail is obliged to provide correct information about consumers' rights to return products and or to refunds.
'Consumers should be allowed to shop without being put under pressure by fake deadlines or misled by fake discounts,' said Patrick Kenny, CCPC Commission member, said.
'They also need clear information about how consumers can contact the company, how to return an item and receive a refund. In this case, the CCPC and the CPC Network have identified several practices that could mislead consumers or undermine their consumer rights.
'Online marketplaces have a legal obligation to provide transparent and honest information about the products they sell, and consumers' rights around returns.'
The ongoing investigation, which is being carried out through the European Commission's Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) Network, is co-led by consumer authorities in the countries involved, including the CCPC.
Singapore-headquartered Shein can now make proposals to address the concerns raised .
If Shein fails to address the concerns, the national authorities can investigate further and potentially take enforcement measures, which may include fines based on its annual turnover in the each of the member states.

Walsh, a member of the European Parliament's delegation to the US, told a group of reporters in Brussels today that she finds a recent change to the American student visa policy worrying. Under changes announced yesterday , anyone seeking to travel to the US to study, conduct research or work in academia must provide the details of every social media account they have owned in the last five years. J1 applicants – for students and graduates who are seeking to work in the US for a fixed period – will also be required to provide their social media handles. Accounts should also be made publicly available, so officials can scrutinise visa applicants' use of social media. Reacting to the announcement yesterday, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the measures are 'excessive'. Everymum deal cost ‘Irish Daily Mail' publisher £2.2m
The £2.2m deal is disclosed in new accounts for the Irish arm of the UK-headquartered Associated Newspapers, which show pre-tax profits increased by 29pc to €1.46m in the 12 months to the end of September 29 last year. The directors for Associated Newspapers (Ireland) Ltd, which trades as DMG Media Ireland, said revenues increased by 5pc from €15.64m to €16.47m as costs increased by 7pc, 'resulting in a positive profitability for the year of €3.8m'. The company recorded the post-tax profit of €3.8m after recording a corporation tax credit of €2.33m. The directors said: 'The revenue and cost increases are due to the investment in Everymum and ongoing investment in print and digital content. 'On October 17, 2023, the company purchased the Everymum business, together with all the assets and liabilities of the business, for a total value of £2.2m.' Husband-and-wife team John Mullins and Gina Militiadou of the Bray-based Zahra Media sold Everymum to DMG Media Ireland in October 2023 in the £2.2m deal. The sale came 23 years after the couple established the website. Everymum has a community of over 200,000 opted-in users. The couple's former Eumedia Ltd, which operated Everymum, recorded post-tax profits of €162,015 as revenues increased by 22pc to €1.07m in 2022. The Everymum website also includes the Ultimate Maternity Guide, the National Parenting Product Awards and the Everymum SuperValu gift bag scheme. The acquisition of Everymum continued a period of expansion at DMG Media Ireland having acquired a number of businesses over the past number of years including Business Plus, and Geek Ireland. The publishing group also operates and Numbers employed by the expanding group increased from 124 to 129 as staff costs rose from €9.96m to €10.49m. Pay to directors declined marginally from €762,000 to €748,000 made up of €699,000 in emoluments and €49,000 in pension contributions. Accumulated profits at the end of September last totalled €6.67m. Separate group accounts filed by Daily Mail and General Trust PLC show that revenues increased to over £1bn last year.

Boots Ireland spared court conviction over misleading Black Friday toothbrush and perfume sale
BOOTS IRELAND WAS spared a court conviction today after last month admitting breaking pricing laws during a 2023 Black Friday sale. The breaches found on electric toothbrushes and perfume price tags triggered a Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) investigation. On 26 May, the retail giant pleaded guilty before Judge Anthony Halpin at Dublin District Court to consumer law that compelled traders to base any discount on the lowest price in at least the previous 30 days and to display this price clearly on any price tag or advertisement. Judge Halpin adjourned the case until today for the retailer to pay €4,624 toward the CCPC costs and €1,000 to the Little Flower Penny Dinners charity. Finalising the prosecution, he noted that Boots Ireland had complied and he applied the Probation of Offender's Act, leaving it spared a recorded conviction. At the prior hearing, Judge Halpin noted defence submissions that the breach was due to a human error and that the firm was remorseful and had no prior offences on record. Advertisement Judge Halpin remarked that Boots was a very reputable firm in Ireland with branches and employees throughout the country, and he noted a senior compliance officer from the company had travelled over from the UK to attend the proceedings. It was among the first batch of prosecutions under the new sales pricing rules introduced in 2022, the European Union (Requirements to Indicate Product Prices) (Amendment) Regulations. Cathal Ó Braonáin BL, for the competition regulator, said the offence arises when a retailer announces a reduced selling cost without announcing the product's lowest price in the preceding 30 days. Boots was found to have committed three pricing breaches for the 17 November, 2023 sale, including advertising an Oral-B toothbrush for €470 with a prior price of €999.99, despite it having been sold at €470 just days before. Two more errors were for another Oral-B toothbrush and a Dior perfume, both advertised at higher previous prices than their actual recent lowest costs. The defence stressed how 104,000 products were on promotion for that Black Friday, and these offences represented a tiny number of items on sale. A full review of internal processes has been carried out, and guidance, protocols, and governance were updated.
