PM Modi to lay foundation stone for Varanasi-Gaya-Ranchi-Kolkata expressway's second phase today
In a landmark move to boost infrastructure and connectivity in eastern India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the second phase of the Varanasi-Gaya-Ranchi-Kolkata Expressway (NH-319B) on Thursday, during his visit to Bihar.
This expressway, which is part of the Bharatmala Project, is a massive infrastructure initiative that promises to transform road travel and economic activity across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
The 690-kilometre-long expressway, with a width of 36 metres, will be Bihar's first six-lane greenfield expressway.
Starting from Barhauli near the Varanasi Ring Road in Uttar Pradesh, it will traverse through Kaimur, Rohtas, Aurangabad, and Gaya in Bihar before entering Jharkhand and continuing to Kolkata.
The expressway promises to halve travel time between Varanasi and Kolkata from 12–14 hours to just 6–7 hours.
The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 35,000 crore, with around Rs 5,994 crore allocated for Bihar alone, and Rs 1,200 crore earmarked for Gaya district.
In Gaya, the expressway will cut through the heavily forested and historically Naxal-affected blocks of Imamganj and Dumaria, covering 29 revenue villages (mauzas) across 33.5 kilometres.
The route includes Anwar Salaiya, Barha, Chhakarbandha, Tarchua, and Dhakpahari, areas that were once difficult to access due to insurgency.
A construction company from Rajasthan has begun setting up a work centre in Chhakarbandha forest and a project office in Baseta to oversee operations.
"Till just a decade ago, even common people hesitated to visit Chhakarbandha due to Naxalite dominance. Today, the expressway is a symbol of development reclaiming such regions," said a local resident, Rahul Manjhi, while noting the missed opportunity of not having an interchange point at Chhakarbandha itself.
Deepa Manjhi, MLA from Imamganj, hailed the project as a game-changer for traffic and economic growth.
'The expressway will improve inter-city connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and boost freight movement. Industrial development will follow, generating employment and fostering economic prosperity,' she said.

In his post, he revealed that the mistreatment went beyond professional boundaries; he faced personal attacks involving his father and his marriage, leaving him with no choice but to step away from the job. The post begins with the techie saying that he joined the company as a fresher in 2022 on a CTC of Rs 8.5 lakh. 'From day one, the environment felt toxic and manipulative — you could clearly sense the unhealthy hierarchy and how everyone in tech was focused on pleasing a particular senior person rather than doing meaningful work," he said. In the 2024 appraisal cycle, the employee listed his achievements. He said that most of the management appreciated his work, but 'that one influential person didn't". The user said that this was because he was not one of those trying to please that person constantly. The employee resigned in April 2024, but was retained with the promise of being given a 55% hike one year later, that is in April 2025. This was only a verbal agreement with no written record. During the 2025 appraisal cycle, he got only a 37% hike instead of 55% as promised. However, this was not the reason for his resignation. The user explains the backdrop by stating that he got engaged in December 2024, married in February 2025, and lost his father in April 2025. During the appraisal, he had a one-on-one meeting with his team lead, who said, 'You should have resigned around your wedding, do you even realize how much your marriage delayed the work? Because of your father's situation and the leave you took, my timeline commitment couldn't be fulfilled." This stunned the techie. 'That was the final straw for me. Over 88% Trust PM Modi On National Security Matters After Op Sindoor: News18 Survey

The survey was carried out in the backdrop of heightened India-Pakistan tensions following Operation Sindoor — a retaliatory strike launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, targeting terror hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. According to the News18 survey, 88.06 per cent of a total of 14,671 respondents have faith in PM Modi when it comes to issues pertaining to national interest. Further, 11.94 per cent of respondents have no trust at all, the survey revealed. In the survey, a question — 'Do you believe that PM Modi has consistently taken a strong stand when it comes to national security?" — was asked to the respondents. The poll was conducted over two days, on May 6 and 7, 2025, using advanced polling software and was made accessible through News18 's websites, social media platforms, and television channels via QR codes. PM Modi On Op Sindoor Last week, PM Modi issued a stern warning to Pakistan, asserting that India will respond decisively to any act of terrorism on its soil. Addressing the public gathering in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, the Prime Minister reiterated that Operation Sindoor, under which India struck terror dens deep inside Pakistan, is not over yet. 'We entered terrorist camps and destroyed them in Pakistan. Our Armed Forces showed such courage that the Pakistan Army ended up begging to stop the war," said PM Modi. 'I want to tell enemies who begged us to stop during Operation Sindoor. Don't be fooled, Operation Sindoor is not over yet," he added. PM Modi said that India will give a befitting reply to every terrorist attack, with the timing, method, and terms of the response to be decided by the Armed Forces. On April 22, terrorists opened fire on civilians in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, killing 26 people in one of the deadliest attacks since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. India's Tough Stance Against Terror On September 18, 2016, four heavily armed terrorists attacked an Indian Army base in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir, killing 19 soldiers. In response, India launched a surgical strike on September 28-29, targeting multiple terror launches across the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The Indian Army's elite para commandos executed the operation with precision, inflicting significant casualties on the terrorists and destroying their infrastructure. The surgical strikes marked a shift in India's counter-terrorism policy, signalling a more assertive stance. The Indian government emphasized that the operation was a pre-emptive move to prevent further infiltration. After three years, on February 14, 2019, a suicide bombing orchestrated by Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed killed 40 CRPF personnel in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, triggering nationwide outrage. In retaliation, the Indian Air Force carried out an airstrike on February 26, targeting a major Jaish-e-Mohammed training camp in Balakot, deep inside Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The Balakot airstrike was the first time since the 1971 war that Indian fighter jets crossed the LoC to hit targets inside Pakistan.
