US judge blocks Trump from cancelling legal documents of 5,000 Venezuelans

India Today3 days ago

A US federal judge has blocked the Trump administration from cancelling work permits and other legal documents issued to around 5,000 Venezuelans under the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program. In a Friday night ruling, US District Judge Edward Chen said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem likely overstepped her authority when she attempted to cancel documents that had allowed the recipients to live and work legally in the United States.advertisementThe documents in question were issued during the final days of President Joe Biden's term, when the Department of Homeland Security extended TPS protections for Venezuelans by 18 months, through October 2026. Noem later reversed that extension as part of the Trump administration's broader efforts to end TPS for Venezuelans.
The US Supreme Court on May 19 allowed that broader rollback to proceed but said Venezuelans could still challenge the invalidation of individual TPS-related documents. Judge Chen ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, who argued that losing their documents could lead to job loss or deportation.'There is nothing in the statute that gives the Secretary power to cancel these documents,' Chen wrote, noting that only a small fraction, about 5,000 out of 350,000 Venezuelans, hold such documents."This smaller number cuts against any contention that the continued presence of these TPS holders who were granted TPS-related documents by the Secretary would be a toll on the national or local economies or a threat to national security," Chen said.advertisementHomeland Security Department spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin criticized the ruling, saying it 'delays justice and seeks to kneecap the president's constitutionally vested powers.'The decision came just hours after the Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to terminate a separate immigration 'parole' program that had granted temporary entry to more than 500,000 people from Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti, and Nicaragua.(With inputs from Reuters)Must Watch

Trump has cited claims of white persecution and so-called 'white genocide' in South Africa, slashing aid and offering asylum to affected groups. This second wave follows the arrival of over 49 people last month, with thousands more reportedly preparing to resettle, mainly in southern U.S. states. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa met Trump at the White House, rejecting the claims but calling the talks productive. Despite the diplomatic tension, the exodus appears to be gaining momentum. Trump is "Open" to Meeting Putin & Zelensky After Latest Peace Talks Fail | Firstpost America | N18G Trump is "Open" to Meeting Putin & Zelensky After Latest Peace Talks Fail | Firstpost America | N18G The White House told US President Donald Trump is open to meeting Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin after delegates from Ukraine and Russia met in Istanbul on Monday for a second round of direct peace talks, more than two years after Russia's invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. The discussions, mediated by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, focused on each side's vision for ending the war. However, the meeting ended without a ceasefire agreement. Ukrainian officials said Russia refused their core demand of an unconditional ceasefire. Meanwhile, Russia suggested a short, localised truce lasting two to three days but didn't give specifics. Despite the deadlock, both sides agreed on humanitarian actions: exchanging all severely wounded, sick, and under-25 prisoners of war and returning the bodies of 12,000 fallen soldiers. See More

President Abdullahi Hints |Firstpost Africa | N18G Somaliland's new President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi says the territory is closer than ever to international recognition. President Abdullahi added that it was just a matter of time now. Reports say the US could be leading efforts to recognise Somaliland. Any such move may infuriate Somalia, but in return, reports say, Washington will be building a military base near the port of Berbera, which is a strategic location on the Gulf of Aden. Somaliland's President says the territory has been strengthening security ties with the US and together have been fighting terrorism and ensuring trade safety in the marine routes in the region. In April, US aircraft carriers, off the coast of Somaliland, played a key role in America's bombing raids on Houthi targets in Yemen. Will the US dump Somalia and recognise Somaliland for strategic advantage in the Horn of Africa? See More
