Hindu Munnani to Madras HC: Muruga Bakthargal meeting got police nod
MADURAI: Four days after the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court granted the police time till Thursday to decide on allowing the 'Muruga Bakthargalin Aanmeega Maanadu' scheduled for June 22, the Hindu Munnani, which is organising the event, informed the court that permission had been granted, albeit with 52 conditions.
However, the outfit raised objections to six of the conditions — including a ban on processions, the requirement of vehicle passes to enter the venue, and the need for separate approvals from the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department and the Madurai City Corporation. The organisation filed a separate petition seeking exemption from these six conditions.
Justice B Pugalendhi, recording the submissions, said a detailed order would be issued soon. Additional Advocate General R Baskaran, representing the Madurai police, stated that the restrictions were imposed solely to prevent any untoward incidents during the spiritual event. He also asserted that the organisers must take full responsibility to ensure peace and order. Accepting the state's submission, the judge instructed the organisers not to allow any political activities during the conference.

The BJP on Saturday took out protest rallies across Tripura condemning the recent vandalism at Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh. Apart from the state capital, Agartala, protest rallies were organised at Kailasahar in Unakoti district, Raghna international border area in North Tripura district, Sonamura in Sepahijala district, and Belonia in South Tripura district. Protesters were seen trying to breach barricades at some places; however, there was no report of any kind of clash anywhere. 'We all know that the ancestral residence of Rabindranath Tagore at Sirajganj district in Bangladesh was vandalised on June 11. We strongly protested against it and condemned it… We never say that Rabindranath Tagore was a Hindu poet; he was Biswakabi. We assembled at Raghna to protest against the vandalism,' said Bagbasa BJP MLA Jadab Lal Nath. A senior police officer in Unakoti said adequate security was deployed at the rally in the district to maintain law and order. At the protest rally in Sonamura, former Union Minister Pratima Bhowmik criticised Muhammad Yunus, the head of Bangladesh's interim government. Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Tinku Roy, who joined the protest rally in Belonia, said, 'This kind of incident (vandalism) will not be tolerated by the Government of India and the Tripura government. As part of the statewide protests, we hit the streets in Belonia.' Aided school teachers: Kerala HC asks govt to provide details of steps needed for fair selection process
Kochi: High court has directed the director of general education (DGE) to file an affidavit within seven days, detailing the steps required to ensure a fair selection process for the appointment of teachers in govt-aided schools in the state. Justice D K Singh gave the order on a petition filed by certain higher secondary school teachers challenging the deduction of a levy towards the contributory pension under the National Pension Scheme (NPS) from their salaries. In its interim order, the bench observed that, as of now, managers have absolute discretion to appoint any qualified individual as a teacher without following any formal selection process or advertising the posts. The court also questioned how such appointments are being approved by the educational authorities despite the absence of a due selection procedure. Prima facie, the court noted that there appears to be a nexus between school managements and educational authorities, enabling appointments not based on merit but on considerations other than merit. Plea in Kerala HC against converting fuel bunk toilets into public facilities as per revised Swachh guidelines
Kochi: A petition has been filed in the high court challenging the action of the local self-govt institutions, which convert the private toilets on the premises of the petroleum retail outlets to public toilets as per the revised guidelines of the Swachh Bharat Mission - Urban. Justice C S Dias, on the petition filed by the Petroleum Traders Welfare and Legal Service Society and four of its members who own petrol bunks, directed the govt to produce the revised guidelines of the Swachh Bharat Mission - Urban. The court further adjourned the petition to Monday. The petitioners stated in the petition that the local self-govt authorities were illegally converting/treating private toilets maintained within the premises of their retail outlets as public toilets and pasting posters on a conspicuous portion of the toilets along with certain switches that seem to indicate that the same is to be used for feedback. Similarly, posters including QR codes were also affixed in toilets for feedback, they stated. The petitioners argued that the alleged action of the local self-govt institutions is a violation of Article 300A of the Constitution, which guarantees protection from being deprived of the proper and independent enjoyment of private properties falling within the realm of private ownership. They further raised security concerns, contending that the decision would lead to unauthorised public access to petrol retail outlets, significantly increasing the risk of fire and other catastrophic incidents due to the influx of people in a restricted area. The petitioners further sought a directive to the state govt and the local self-govt institutions to refrain from converting/treating private toilets maintained within the premises of the petrol retail outlets within the state as public toilets and also for a general declaration against treating such private toilets as public toilets.
