Schoolboy slain in unprovoked attack by swordsman during ‘murderous' 20-minute rampage, court told

Yahoo3 days ago

A man carried out a 'brutal string of attacks with murderous intent' which left a 14-year-old schoolboy dead and five others injured during a series of unprovoked attacks, a court has heard.
Marcus Arduini Monzo embarked on a 20-minute rampage with a large 60cm Japanese sword in Hainault, north-east London, on 30 April last year, while under the influence of drugs, a jury at the Old Bailey was told.
The bearded defendant, 37, is accused of ambushing teenager Daniel Anjorin as he walked to school and slashing him repeatedly in the chest and neck.
He has denied his murder, as well as four counts of attempted murder and one count of wounding with intent, which left injuries of 'various degrees of severity'.
Opening the case on Wednesday, prosecutor Tom Little KC said: 'The prosecution say there was a clear intention to kill a number of people that morning on the defendant's part. It did not matter who they were, or indeed how old they were.
'Daniel Anjorin is the boy that was murdered. He did not know the defendant. He was just 14 years of age at the time. He had left home and was simply walking to school, minding his own business, looking forward to the day ahead when he was killed by the defendant.
'His life was snuffed out in an instant. In fact, most accurately, he was slain by the defendant with the use of this sword.'
The court heard that the force used was 'extreme', and that Daniel sustained a 'devastating and unsurvivable chopping injury'.
Mr Little KC recounted that the incident began shortly before 7am, when Monzo is accused of deliberately driving his van into Donato Iwule on Laing Close, who narrowly escaped death after being 'catapulted' into a nearby garden and attacked with the same sword.
'Donato Iwule also did not know the defendant. If he had not managed to escape, it seems inevitable that he too would have been killed,' the prosecutor said.
In dramatic footage shown to jurors, Mr Iwule can be heard shouting, 'I don't know you' before managing to run across the street while screaming.
Monzo is then accused of approaching a female witness and attempting to trap her by standing on her foot. She managed to escape and was able to call the police.
Shortly afterwards, Daniel was making his way to school when Monzo is accused of 'moving quickly like a predator' towards him and fatally striking him with the sword.
In mobile phone footage from one witness, Mr Little KC says one onlooker can be heard saying "He just killed that boy, he just killed him right outside my house".
Emergency services were swiftly called, with police officers and paramedics arriving just moments after Daniel had been killed. As they approached his body, the court heard that Monzo approached the ambulance with his sword, forcing them to retreat and preventing them from treating Daniel.
The third person to be attacked was a female police officer, Yasin Mechem-Whitfield, who is said to have been injured after she 'bravely' chased Monzo through a series of alleyways while he was still armed with the sword.
The defendant is then accused of entering a nearby house and attacking Sindy Arias and Henry De Los Rios Polania in their bedroom, before 'sparing their lives' after their four-year-old child started crying.
During the course of the attack, he allegedly shouted 'do you believe in God?' and 'because if you don't believe in God...' before fleeing the property.
The final attack is said to have occurred after Monzo was surrounded in a garage area, with police inspector Moloy Campbell injured before he was disarmed and arrested.
A search of his property found cannabis and a skinned cat, while a Katana sword was found inside his van.
During his police interview, jurors heard that Monzo told police officers that 'something happened, like a game happening' and compared it to the movie 'Hunger Games'. He also claimed that one of his personalities was that of a professional assassin.
Jurors heard that there was 'no issue' that Monzo carried out the string of attacks, but it was his state of mind that was in dispute.
'The prosecution case is that this is a clear case of murder and that it is also a clear case of four attempted murders. We say that the defendant's conduct was brought about by a self-induced intoxication in the form of drugs,' Mr Little KC said.
'This, we say, led to a psychotic disorder but not one meeting the requirements to make out the partial defence to murder of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility.'
The court heard that the defence case will say that Monzo was most likely suffering from a pre-existing condition, which created a 'vulnerability to experiencing psychotic episodes with schizophrenia-like symptoms, prompted by his use of cannabis'.
In a court appearance last month, Monzo denied Daniel's murder, and pleaded not guilty to the attempted murders of Donato Iwule, Sindy Arias, Henry De Los Rios Polania and Pc Yasmin Margaret Mechem-Whitfield as well as wounding Inspector Moloy Campbell with intent.
He also denied aggravated burglary and possession of a bladed article relating to a kitchen knife.

Lee Jae-myung, Trump speak on phone, reaffirm U.S.-South Korea alliance

New South Korean President Lee Jae Myung appears at a news conference at the presidential office in Seoul, South Korea, on Wednesday, his first remarks after being inaugurated earlier in the day. Photo by Ahn Young-joon/EPA-EFE/pool June 7 (UPI) -- South Korea's President Lee Jae-myung spoke for the first time with U.S. President Donald Trump late Friday as both leaders agreed to further strengthen their nations' alliance. Lee, who took office Wednesday, talked with Trump in a 20-minute phone call, according to the presidential office of South Korea. The White House has not confirmed the conversation, and the president, who is in New Jersey this weekend, hasn't posted about the call on Truth Social. The two presidents agreed to strive toward reaching a mutually acceptable trade agreement, including on tariffs. Trump has imposed 10% baseline tariffs on most trading partners. On April 2, Trump said the Republic of Korea would face a 49% duty but one week later he paused it for three months along with the other worst offenders in the trade imbalance. South Korea's tariffs on imported agricultural goods average 54%. Trump congratulated Lee on his election victory, and the new leader expressed his gratitude, according to the office. Lee noted the importance of the alliance, which forms the foundation of Seoul's diplomacy. The phone call was "conducted in a friendly and candid atmosphere," as they shared anecdotes and experiences from their election campaigns, according to South Korea's presidential office. They exchanged views on their assassination attempts last year and political challenges, in addition to discussing their their golf skills and agreed to play a round together. Trump invited Lee to the White House and the Group of Seven summit in Alberta, Canada, from June 15-17. South Korea is not a G7 member state, but the nation attended them group's meetings in 2021 and 2023. Korea's neighbor, Japan, is a member of the G7. Yonhap reported the South Korea government is in consultations for Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Chinese President Xi Jinping to speak to their leader. It has not been decided whether Lee will attend the North Atlantic Treaty Organization leaders' summit in the Netherlands on June 24 and 25, according to the presidential office. Lee, the Democratic Party liberal candidate, won in a landslide over Kim Moon-soo of the conservative People Power Party. He was inaugurated the next day on Wednesday. South Koreans turned out in record numbers in a snap election triggered by the impeachment and removal of Yoon Suk Yeol in April after a botched martial law decree. Some 35.24 million voters cast a ballot, representing a turnout of 79.4% -- the highest mark since an 80.7% turnout in 1997.

Japan trade negotiator Akazawa says he made progress in U.S. tariff talks

Japan had made some progress in a fifth round of trade talks with U.S. officials aimed at ending tariffs that are hurting Japan's economy, Tokyo's chief tariff negotiator said. "Tariffs have already been imposed on autos, auto parts, steel and aluminum, and some of them have doubled to 50% along with 10% general tariff. These are causing daily losses to Japan's economy," Ryosei Akazawa, said in Washington on Friday after talks with officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Akazawa declined to say what progress they had made. The latest round of talks may be the last in-person meeting between senior Japanese and U.S. officials before the Group of Seven (G7) leaders summit that starts on June 15, where U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to meet Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Japan also faces a 24% tariff rate starting in July unless it can negotiate a deal with Washington. "We want an agreement as soon as possible. The G7 summit is on our radar, and if our leaders meet, we want to show what progress has been made," Akazawa said. "Still we must balance urgency with a need to guard our national interests," he added. Last month Japan's trade negotiator said U.S. defence equipment purchases, shipbuilding technology collaboration, a revision of automobile import standards and an increase in agricultural imports could be bargaining chips in tariff talks. In a bid to reach an agreement with the U.S., Japan is also proposing a mechanism to reduce the auto tariff rate based on how much countries contribute to the U.S. auto industry, the Asahi newspaper reported on Friday. Akazawa said Japan's position has not changed and that the tariffs are not acceptable.
