Friday, March 14 marks the deadline to file an initial claim for damages from the Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon Fire, a huge wildfire started by the United States Forest Service nearly three years ago.
Congress has extended the original November 2024 deadline twice, but has not given any indication it will be extended again. Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon Fire Claims Office officials are urging any last holdouts to apply for compensation before the deadline by filing what's known as a 'notice of loss.'
'If you know a friend, family member or neighbor who was impacted by the disaster and has not yet submitted a notice of loss, please encourage them to do so this week,' New Mexico Joint Recovery Office Director of Operations Jay Mitchell said in a statement. 'The funds are available to help them rebuild, but they must take this first step before March 14.'
Congress awarded $5.45 billion to the Federal Emergency Management Agency with the goal of fully compensating people from the 534-square-mile wildfire that began as two botched prescribed burns on federal land. The wildfire in the Las Vegas and Mora area burned several hundreds of homes, and ushered in severe flooding that continues to cause damage.
The claims office offers compensation for homes and other property lost in the fire, as well as erosion and reforestation; smoke and ash cleaning; lost income and more. The office also provides flood insurance for structures for five years and conservation restoration plans for damage to land.
A federal judge late last year also ordered the office to pay people for so-called 'noneconomic damages' from the fire, which could result in several hundred million dollars paid for the emotional harm of the blaze. The office could still appeal that ruling, however.
As of March 11, the office had paid more than 14,000 claims totaling nearly $2 billion, or about 36% of the total Congress awarded, according to the latest figures from the office. That leaves $3.45 billion, minus administrative costs, left for fire victims.
The amount awarded so far includes $1.53 billion awarded to individuals; $257 million for businesses; $104 million for governments and smaller amounts to tribal nations and nonprofits.
Those who wish to file an initial claim can do so online, by mail or email or in-person at one of three physical offices in and around the burn scar. Those offices will be open for extended hours, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday to process claims.
Officials stressed that the process can take less than 20 minutes and that fire victims don't need to have all of their documentation in order before applying.

Chief Joseph:  Servant-Leader and Guardian of His People

Throughout the summer of 1877, a band of the Nez Perce tribe engaged in a 1,170 mil e-lo ng flight and running battle with forces of the U.S. Army. Driven from their homeland in the Wallowa Valley of northeastern Oregon Territory, and led by several chiefs, they fled across the Idaho T erritory. Men, women, children, and horses, crossed int o Montana as they sought escape across the Canadian border. Exhausted and hungry, and their numbers diminished by pitched battles, they made a final stand in the Bear Paw Mountains. They were still in Montana—only 40 miles from Canada. The American public followed this exodus through the newspapers of the day. Readers reacted differently to this war between U.S. troopers and Indians than to other conflicts fought in the Great Plains over the previous 40 years. Many Americans, including members of Congress and the soldiers engaged in these battles, came to admire the Nez Perce for their endurance, bravery, and humanity.

Wheatfield looking to get its own zip code

The Town of Wheatfield is divided between four zip codes and has long wanted to rectify that. Town officials this week gave their support to federal legislation that would create a new zip code for the town. It is working with Congressman Tim Kennedy's office on the effort, as only Congress can grant the request. Currently, the town is divided between the following postal codes: • 14094, based around Lockport • 14132, based around Sanborn • 14120, based around North Tonawanda • 14304, based around Niagara Falls 'The Town of Wheatfield needs its own identity and having one zip code would help our community in this regard,' the resolution states. It is something the town has tried to accomplish with congressmen for the past 20 years. Town Supervisor Don MacSwan said the four codes come from when Wheatfield was a rural community with a small population. Now it is more of a bedroom community whose population over the past 30 years has gone from 11,125 in 1990 to a 2024 estimate of 18,578. 'Now is the time to give us a zip code,' MacSwan said. These four codes existing in one municipality have caused plenty of residential issues as the town grows. The resolution states this has caused confusion in filing death certificates and there are several street names and home addresses in common across the four zip codes. In one instance, a new home builder had its National Grid electric service delayed by two months due to a wrong zip code being listed. This change would not give the town a new post office. One such bill going through Congressional committee, H.R. 3095, lists the Town of Pendleton among 72 communities in 20 states that would get its own zip code if passed. That town is also divided between the 14120 and 14094 codes and saw its population go from 5,010 in 1990 to an estimated 7,135 in 2024. Congressman Nick Langworthy, whose district goes into Pendleton, gave his support for the change. Residents can write letters to the town showing their support so that this proposal does not die in committee.

How Can Congress Keep American Jews Safe?

Your editorial 'The Intifada Comes to Boulder' (June 3) rightly states that the recent violent attacks against American Jews, in Colorado and Washington, 'are intended to terrorize the Jewish diaspora.' You advise that this will get worse 'if it isn't denounced by all political sides.' That's true, but it mustn't be the end of the discussion. Republican and Democratic politicians have condemned these heinous attacks. What the American Jewish community needs now are concrete steps to keep us more safe and secure. Congress has underfunded the Nonprofit Security Grant Program—the largest federal program to support security at synagogues and other Jewish sites—administered by the Department of Homeland Security. For 2025, Congress appropriated $275 million for NSGP grants. Last year more than $900 million in applications were submitted. Congress should appropriate at least $500 million for NSGP grants for the coming year.
