CHICAGO — Rideshare drivers have fallen victim to several armed robberies and carjackings on the city's West Side, prompting a warning from Chicago police amid their search for the males responsible.
According to CPD, a group of up to six male teenagers wearing dark clothing and ski masks were robbed in Garfield Park since the start of the year. In each instance, CPD said a group of men would call for a rideshare using an app.
After the rideshare driver arrived at the destination, the suspect(s) pulled out a gun or knife and put the victim in a chokehold from behind, pinning them against the driver's seat. The suspect(s) then demand the victim's personal belongings and vehicles.

CPD's alert on Thursday renewed lobbying calls by the Chicago Gig Alliance to pass the proposed Chicago Rideshare Living Ware and Safety Ordinance, which aims to make ridesharing platforms safer and support drivers in earning predictable wages.
'Not only is this job dangerous, but we're not even clearing minimum wage to do it,' said Lori Simmons, rideshare driver and lead organizer with Chicago Gig Alliance. 'There are 85,000 rideshare drivers working in this city, and we can't wait any longer for the City of Chicago to force these corporations to treat us like human beings.'

Chicago police mourn Krystal Rivera, killed in line of duty by accidental fire

The Brief Chicago Police Officer Krystal Rivera was fatally shot by friendly fire during a foot chase Thursday night, with officials confirming only her partner's weapon was discharged. The incident unfolded as officers pursued an armed suspect into a building, where Rivera was accidentally struck. Authorities are investigating the events leading up to the shooting, while the department mourns the four-year veteran and mother of a 10-year-old girl. CHICAGO - Chicago Police Officer Krystal Rivera was accidentally shot and killed by her partner during a confrontation with an armed suspect Thursday night on the South Side, officials said. "The first question is, was it an intentional fire shot or accidental discharge?" said former CPD Supt. Garry McCarthy. The backstory The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said Rivera was shot in the back. It happened Thursday around 10 p.m. at 82nd Street and Drexel Avenue. Police said Rivera and her partner stopped a man who eventually ran into a building. When officers chased him, police said they were confronted by a man with a gun. "Rivera was in the process of investigating someone in possession of a gun. At some point, a weapon was pointed in the direction of those officers", said CPD Supt. Larry Snelling. "How the officer got in between her partner and the person he was firing at we don't know, but that's certainly one of the risks of entering a room like that," Snelling said. Authorities are investigating the initial stop prior to the deadly shooting. Rivera worked for the department for four years. She was described as hard-working and a mentor to younger officers. She also leaves behind a 10-year-old daughter. Chicago police are asking the city to pray for Rivera's family as well as her partner. "That officer is in a very tough place, it's unimaginable what they're going through right now", Snelling said. The Source The information in this report came from the Chicago Police Department, an interview with former Chicago Police Chief Garry McCarthy and previous FOX 32 reporting.

After Chicago police officer accidentally killed by fellow officer, top cop urges against rush to judgment

Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling on Saturday cautioned against a rush to judgment, after police confirmed Officer Krystal Rivera was accidentally shot and killed by a fellow officer Thursday night during a chase in the Chatham neighborhood. "There may be things that an officer sees that no one else knows at the time," he said. Rivera was part of a CPD tactical team on patrol just before 10 p.m. near 82nd and Drexel, when they tried to conduct an investigatory stop, and as officers approached, the suspect ran into a nearby apartment building. Police chased the suspect inside, and sources said Rivera and her partner followed the suspect to an apartment on the second floor. Snelling has said, when officers got to that apartment, they were confronted by a second person armed with a rifle. "As released in yesterday's preliminary statement, an officer discharged his weapon during the encounter with an armed offender," the department said in a statement Friday night. "Further investigation revealed the only weapon discharged during this incident was the weapon of the officer, whose gunfire unintentionally struck Officer Rivera." Rivera, 36, was shot in the back, and was rushed to University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Police have not released any information about the other officer's name, age, or time with department, but sources said the officer is Rivera's partner, and Snelling has given some insight into his situation. At an outreach event to build bridges between police officers and Chicago youth on Saturday morning, there was no avoiding the trauma and tragedy of the past 48 hours. "That officer is in a very, very tough place; unimaginable what that officer has to be feeling right now," Snelling said. Although police have confirmed another officer accidentally shot and killed Rivera, Snelling urged Chicagoans not to jump to any premature conclusions about exactly what happened. "There may be things that an officer sees that no one else knows at the time," he said. Dr. Carrie Steiner, a former Chicago police officer turned police and public service psychologist, said the human brain works differently under extreme stress. "We're trying to do the best job we can, but sometimes it's maybe not the best, right?" she said. "When you're faced with deadly force, your limbic system starts to go, and you are just like more of an animal, and you're just reacting to things. … You're not using the frontal lobe, which is what we're using right now. You're using the limbic system, which is basically fight, flight, freeze." These situations are rare but not unprecedented. Two Chicago Police officers were wounded in 2021 when another officer's gun discharged during a struggle with a suspect. Snelling said the investigation will likely result in changes at the department. "This is how we create training and anything else that we need to do around these situations," he said. Purple and black bunting hung across the entrance of CPD headquarters on Saturday in honor of Rivera, a four-year veteran of the force, and a mother. No funeral services or other memorial arrangements for Rivera have yet been announced. No charges have been filed against either of the people in custody. Former Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy, now chief of police in Willow Springs, said this investigation could take longer than others, because of the complicating factors involving multiple officers. Chicago police and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability were investigating the shooting.

Chicago cop shot and killed by fellow officer in friendly fire incident during tactical operation

A Chicago police officer was accidentally shot and killed by a fellow officer while pursuing a suspect on the city's south side. Krystal Rivera, a 36-year-old single mother who had spent four years on the force, was rushed to the hospital in a squad car after taking a gunshot wound to the back. The vehicle she was traveling in bizarrely crashed and caught on fire, and she had to be transferred into another vehicle to complete the journey. The incident occurred at around 9:50 p.m. Thursday while Rivera and the Gresham (6th) District tactical team tried to conduct an investigatory stop on a person believed to have a weapon. Her death was later ruled a homicide. Rivera's daughter, Bella Medina, 10, told The Chicago Sun-Times that her mother hugged her tighter than usual when she left for work on Thursday morning. 'When she said bye, it's like she had a feeling. She gave me the biggest hug, biggest kiss, and she said, 'If anything happens, I'm always right here,' in my heart.' Rivera's sister described Medina as her life. Bella's 11th birthday party was scheduled to take place this weekend. 'As released in yesterday's preliminary statement, an officer discharged his weapon during the encounter with an armed offender,' a CPD statement read on Friday. 'Further investigation revealed the only weapon discharged during this incident was the weapon of the officer, whose gunfire unintentionally struck Officer Rivera.' At a press briefing early on Friday morning, Superintendent Larry Snelling told reporters that Rivera and another officer had been following the suspect on foot and had chased him into a building. Inside, the officers encountered the suspect armed with a rifle. During the confrontation, another Chicago police officer fired shots, hitting Rivera. Several suspects are now in custody, according to Snelling. Snelling described Rivera as 'young, vibrant, and a hard worker,' highlighting that she had confiscated and processed two guns that day prior to the incident. "She did great work, and if you talk to anyone on her team, they will tell you how great of a worker she was," he said. "This is the risk that our officers take every single day." Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also spoke at the briefing, saying, 'The entire city of Chicago is grieving and mourning together over this tragic loss.' 'This young woman served honorably and courageously,' he said. 'I'm calling on the entire city of Chicago to keep this officer's family in your prayers, along with our entire police department. Her young, energetic, and bold approach towards keeping us safe is the memory that we will honor, and I will assure that our police department has everything that it needs in order to render justice.' Her 10-year-old daughter survives Rivera. Pastor Donovan Price told ABC Chicago that he prayed with Rivera's fellow officers during roll call after her death. 'It reminds me of a typical family when they found out something terrible happened. They're crying, emotional. With these officers, a lot of them are young. You can look in their eyes that it could have almost been them.' Friends told the network that Rivera dreamed of being a police officer since she was a teenager,
