Referee body cams and enhanced offside detection system tested at Club World Cup
PARIS, June 6 (Reuters) - Referees wearing body cameras and an upgraded offside detection system will be among the headline innovations at this year's Club World Cup in the United States, FIFA said on Friday.
For the first time at a FIFA tournament, match officials will wear body cameras, with selected footage broadcast live to audiences.
A new, advanced version of semi-automated offside technology — combining Artificial Intelligence, multiple cameras, and ball sensors — will be deployed to speed up decision-making while maintaining VAR oversight for marginal calls.
"However, for challenging offside scenarios, the video assistant referee will still validate the information provided by the system before the decision is taken," FIFA said in a statement.
The tournament, which expands to 32 teams this year, will serve as a major testing ground for both systems, the governing body said.

Chelsea 'hesitate' over signing £68m striker ahead of Liverpool
Chelsea are 'hesitating' over beating Liverpool to the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, according to reports in Germany. Chelsea are looking to squad ahead of the Club World Cup and the £30 million deal to sign Liam Delap from Ipswich Town was completed this week. Chelsea are also in advanced talks with Borussia Dortmund over a deal for Jamie Gittens, who has agreed a seven-year contract with the Premier League side. Ekitike, meanwhile, has attracted interest following his impressive season with Eintracht Frankfurt in which he finished the campaign with 22 goals in all competitions. According to BILD, Chelsea remain in the running to sign Ekitike before the transfer deadline at 7pm next Tuesday, but the club still have reservations over moving forward with a deal. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. It's claimed that the key reason is Chelsea's valuation of Ekitike – Eintracht Frankfurt value the 22-year-old at €100m (£84.3m) but Chelsea are refusing to go beyond €80m (£67.4m). BILD also report that Liverpool are also interested in Ekitike but their main focus is to reach an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz. Last week, reports in Germany claimed that Liverpool had held initial talks over a move for Ekitike. Speaking on the final day of the Bundesliga season, Eintracht Frankfurt's sporting director, Markus Krosche, refused to rule out the prospect of selling Ekitike this summer. 'He's one of the most interesting strikers on the European market. Hugo has to decide that,' Krosche told Sport 1. More Trending 'I'm glad we have him. If he decides otherwise, that's our motto – if a player develops faster than us, we let him go.' Earlier this week, Ekitike pulled out of France's Under-21s squad for their European Championship campaign due to a back injury. Chelsea, meanwhile, begin their Club World Cup campaign against Los Angeles FC on June 16. Maresca's side will then play Flamengo on June 20 before finishing their Group D campaign against ES Tunis on June 20. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Coco Gauff French Open prize money revealed as win over Aryna Sabalenka lands US star her second Grand Slam
Coco Gauff has landed the second Grand Slam title of her career after a thrilling victory over Aryna Sabalenka in Saturday's French Open final. The 21-year-old American sensation conquered Roland Garros for the very first time after coming from behind to defeat the top-ranked Sabalenka 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4. And as well as becoming French Open champion, Gauff has picked up some huge prize money in the process. The win on Saturday saw her claim a staggering $2.9million, while Sabalenka collected $1.4m as a consolation after her gut-wrenching defeat. Just three months on from her 21st birthday, Gauff has now raked in close to $30m over the course of her tennis career. Celebrity Net Worth estimated the US tennis star, who was listed by Forbes as the highest-paid female athlete in 2024, was worth $35m before Saturday's French Open final. That figure is only likely to have increased after she thickened her wallet and added another Grand Slam to her collection this weekend. The second-ranked Gauff made fewer mistakes in a contest that was full of tension and momentum swings to get the better of Sabalenka for the second time in a Grand Slam final. She also came from a set down to beat the Belarusian in the 2023 US Open final. She raised the winners' trophy aloft and then kissed it several times, before holding her hand over her heart when the US national anthem played. Gauff is the first American woman to win at Roland-Garros since Serena Williams in 2015. She then thanked her parents for doing everything 'from washing my clothes to keeping me grounded and giving me the belief that I can do it.' 'You guys probably believe in me more than myself,' Gauff said in her on-court speech. It was the first No. 1 vs. No. 2 final in Paris since 2013, when Williams defeated Maria Sharapova, and just the second in the last 30 years. After Sabalenka sent a backhand wide on her second match point, Gauff fell onto her back, covering her face with both hands as she started to sob, then got up and held her hand over her mouth. She continued to sob as she patted the clay with her left hand. Gauff greeted Sabalenka at the net with a warm hug and thanking the umpire, before screaming out with joy and relief. She then got to her knees and crouched forward, continuing to cry as she savored the win. The new champion later hugged film director Spike Lee and celebrated with her entourage in her box, three years after she lost in her first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros. In her on-court speech, she also added that the defeat in 2022 at the age of 18 put her in a 'dark place' and then thanked the fans on Court-Philippe Chatrier, who were rooting mostly for her.

Andorra 0-1 England: Harry Kane spares Three Lions embarrassment in World Cup qualifier
However, scoring just once against the nation ranked 173rd in the world by FIFA will undoubtedly raise questions for a team that have designs on winning the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada in 2026, even if the rigours of a long and taxing season and the Spanish heat and humidity can perhaps be used as legitimate mitigating factors for such a disappointing display.
