Weather: More than a hundred homes without power in Bay of Plenty

Earlier severe thunderstorm warnings have now been lifted, but a heavy rain watch remains in place for Bay of Plenty.
PowerCo's outage map shows about 170 properties in Western Bay of Plenty are without electricity.
Earlier outages in Auckland and Northland appear to be resolved.
Niwa principal scientist Chris Brandolino told

the place you don't want to be when there is lightning in and around your area is outside.
"You definitely don't want to be on the water or on the beach or under a single tree in a paddock. Lightning is lazy, lightning is going to go for the tallest thing out there."
He said the safest place to be is inside, away from windows: "There is an expression - when thunder roars, head indoors."
Brandolino explained that thunder is a result of lightning.
"Lightning is so hot - roughly five times hotter than the surface of the sun - it expands the air quite violently and then the air comes back, and it's that process that creates the thunder and loud noise."

On Sunday it will be mostly fine, with one or two showers about Southland coasts. It is a slightly different story for the North Island. There have been 37,000 lightning strikes since Monday, and MetService says more could be on the way. While the risk of thunderstorms is lowering, there is a chance parts of the north will still see them on Friday and Saturday. Thunderstorms are possible for Coromandel, Auckland, Waikato and Great Barrier Island. For the upper North Island, peppered showers continue to bubble away throughout the weekend. Weather: Heavy rain, possible thunderstorms for large parts of the country
There is a moderate risk of a few thunderstorms in the eastern Bay of Plenty ranges until mid-morning. Photo: MetService Much of New Zealand can expect heavy rain on Thursday morning, while there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms for some regions. MetService said an unstable northwest flow is moving across the North Island, with western Northland to Taranaki at moderate risk of thunderstorms, extending inland to western Taupō and northern Taumarunui and far western Tasman and Buller districts. There is also a moderate risk of a few thunderstorms in the eastern Bay of Plenty ranges until mid-morning. Thunderstorms will bring brief heavy rain of 5-20mm/h and small hail for Waitomo, Taumarunui, Taranaki, southern Manawatū, Horowhenua and Kāpiti Thursday afternoon. MetService also issued a heavy rain watch for North Otago from 6am this morning until 5pm. Meanwhile, there is a road snowfall warning in place for Porters Pass - State Highway 73 from 10pm tonight until 6am Friday. There is also a road snowfall warning in place for Crown Range Road until 9am Thursday. Burst water main causes issues on Auckland's North Shore
A watermain burst on Lake Road in Northcote on Auckland's North Shore this afternoon causing low, or no water to Northcote, Northcote Point, Hillcrest and some of the Takapuna area. Photo: Instagram / Richard Hillls Watercare is conducting emergency repairs along Lake Road in Auckland's Northcote after a water main burst. Watercare's website says properties in Northcote, Hillcrest and Takapuna are affected and may experience low water pressure until the fault is repaired. It says the fault was reported at 1.45pm on Wednesday afternoon, and the estimated restoration time is close to midnight Thursday. North Shore councillor Richard Hills said that Watercare were arranging for water tankers to be stationed at 22 Potter Avenue and 46 Raleigh Road, but no timeframe was given for when these would be in place.
